Fionn Regan – Put a Penny in the Slot Lyrics 14 years ago
Redwheelbarrow, I agree.

Put a 'penny in the slot' is reminiscent of a prayer candle... but an artificial one. A metaphor of hope in love is created that is like the imagined essence of a candle. The artificial flame. It is not real love, the pure love we all want. But the artifice of the shared abstraction of love, (perhaps taught to us as children.)

He is singing for the idea of love that you can only dream of. Descibing that perhaps love or hope is an imagined human construct. The religious imagery fits as it is all about divine and definitive hope. But what is faith and hope, if not an imagined human construct.

The reality is... 'she will not let you be her lover... etc' This is the heartbreaking truth of the song. Love is an individual experience. Taken from childhood, spirituality or secular philosophical explorations. Hence the existential references. The two people do not fit.

The love felt is expressed in the individual heartbreak.

I feel like it describes the imagination of what love could be, or life. The balance between imagination and the reality of two peoples heart.

It is describing the feeling of a hoping for, and being nostalgic about love at the one time.

Love isn't as easy as putting a penny in the slot, it is not the imagined definition of children and faith... love is an individual shared experience.
