I think the point of the song is that all of the lyrics are from other songs. I think the song is about singing along to songs while playing (as the title suggests) air guitar.
The lyrics seem to be "misheard" as they're not exactly as the originals, but close enough to be what someone might think they are from just listening to them on the radio.
The part about "12 o'clock" seems like part of the DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince song "Summertime" as if someone were singing along but didn't exactly remember how the lyrics go. |

This song kicked my ass when I first got the album. I was going through something with this girl that I'd had a big crush on for a while... we finally got together and things were going great and I was so happy, then she started talking to her ex.
For me, at the time, this song described the hope I had for her and I (the things we could do... her eyes lighting up when she saw me), contrasted with the reality of the fact that I was losing her back to the ex (disappearing). Ultimately we did split, and at the time it seemed like my dreams were just slipping away and there wasn't really anything I could do about it. |

I get the feeling that this is one of those bittersweet songs about a guy that really likes a girl, but she won't show him any affection unless she's drunk. The "tide" part indicates to me that he can only have her when she's drunk enough, but when she's sober again (and the tide has turned) she won't acknowledge him. |

I agree... one of my favourites... I can't get it out of my head, and I'm driving my friends nuts by constantly repeating "smoke baby, smoke baby" over and over... Got to admit though, I used my editing equipment and cut that rap part out. Made the song 100x better, as the rap was totall out of groove with the song. It's the perfect song to describe those relationships where all you have is sex and getting f-ed up. |

I think there's a pretty obvious Freudian/Phallic symbology at work here... I mean, what does a woman do with a cigarette that he would be jealous of? Put her lips all over it... suck on it... derive pleasure from it... Even the way she needs it (probably addicted) and not him. But then again, sometimes a cigarette is just a cigarette. |
