Beverley Knight – Straight Jacket Lyrics 2 years ago
Due to the fact the title is spelled differently, \'Straight Jacket\' rather than \'Straitjacket\' it makes me think she\'s singing about a same sex relationship and the fact that a family member won\'t accept it, and wants the person to be in a \'STRAIGHT Jacket\'.

Nelly Furtado – Powerless (Say What You Want) Lyrics 5 years ago
I think I finally get this song.

''Cause this life is too short to live it just for you' - She's saying that you shouldn't be treated better or more special than anyone else, people shouldn't prioritise you over others.
'But when you feel so powerless, what are you gonna do' - But when you come up against adversity because of your ethnicity (or anything else), what are you gonna do about it?

She's trying to explain how important the protection of diversity is. How if it isn't protected you can be marginalised and made to feel 'powerless'.

And then comes 'say what you want', because your most powerful weapon against this is your voice and words. You can say what you really think and show others that you won't take their prejudice.

'We take the culture and contort, perhaps only to distort what we are hiding' - The west takes other cultures and distorts aspects of them for their own use (e.g. moccasins came from the Native American culture, which is now a minority.)

Perhaps we are using parts of other cultures then changing them so that we don't even know they're from the culture we took them from. If we did know then we might be ashamed because it would remind us of how we treated that culture in the first place, the hidden part of our history that isn't often taught in schools.
This could also apply to the British Empire and how badly other cultures were treated, for example in New Zealand and Australia.

The Middle 8 is her explaining how difficult it can be to feel like you're part of a wider culture when you're a minority. She's wondering if she'll ever feel like a part of it ('Hey you, the one outside, are you ever gonna get in').

Nerina Pallot – Mr. King Lyrics 9 years ago
I recently went to see Nerina perform and she said 'this song is about the end of the world I guess'. So make of that what you will :)

Kristian Leontiou – Story of my life Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it's saying that no matter how much you change or wish something hadn't happened, it's still there in your past and there's no getting away from it.

Kelly Osbourne – One Word Lyrics 13 years ago
I found this on http://www.3blackchicks.com/music/music-kellyosbourne.html :

"On other tracks, Kelly delves into her emotional state of mind before and after life in rehab. “One Word” is about the power of a single word. “My mom looked at me and only said my name and I instantly knew that the shit had hit the fan and I was going to rehab,” Kelly says."

Appleton – Don't Worry Lyrics 13 years ago
Apparently this is about the co-writer's father who died, so I think it's about a loved one who died and is still there for you.

Appleton – Everything Eventually Lyrics 14 years ago
Meaning from http://www.tourdates.co.uk/news/2661-life-after-all-saints-the-appleton-sisters

"...along comes the next single’ ‘Everything Eventually’. They see it is a celebration of life. Enjoy each day as you never know what is around the corner. A poignant eastern melodic sounding track with another big hooky chorus. I asked the girls about the story behind the track. They told me that it in a way was about the day before a disaster. It was actually about 11th September but they said that it could be equally for any other event. The day before a life-changing event. Everything is perfect or normal and then out of the blue comes a harrowing experience that changes everything. An emphasis on enjoying and making the most of every moment as we are never prepared for what may happen. Even the very next day."
