Bob Dylan – Under the Red Sky Lyrics 5 years ago
Here's my take.

The little boy and the girl lived in an alley under the red sky - the kids had a tough childhood - not from well to do families; living as if under a curse (red sky) - the fury of the sun - reflective of the curse pronounced in Deut 28:23 "The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron."

The moon is a symbol of religion - it is merely a reflection of absolute truth (the sun). It is only a reflection because it is based on man's understanding of the truth.

The man in the moon is the preacher man and he gives hope to the little girl who listens to his sermons - she has hope that she will be lifted out of the hardship she was born into - "the alley under the red sky".

But then the winds of life blew hard (the winds blew low and high) and they both ended up screwed by life just the same and died like everyone else (baked in a pie) - even if they lived their lives hoping and believing that things will get better.

This whole thing happens in a bible-based town where they preach the Kingdom of Heaven and are led around by a horse as blind as everyone else (the preacher man). He obviously has a very strong influence on the town's folks and gives them all hope. and they hope until they die.

but then the last stanza says that one day this "hope-giver" preacher man dies and the towns folk are left high and dry. That means that without hope, our lives are meaningless and dry. We need hope to live - even if it doesn't work out. For without hope and vision we perish. There is nothing to motivate us to carry on living.

ABBA – The Piper Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is prophetic of the coming of the Anti-Christ. The coming leader who mesmerizes the people with his eloquence and diplomacy and wins the heart of the people with economic reforms to bring peace on earth. Halfway through, he turns bad - the 2nd 3 1/2 years as in the book of Revelations. The first half of his reign will be mesmerizing because of the tune of peace he "pipes" and wins the people over. the second half will be a reign by instilling fear in people. Why "the piper"? The piper in the legend piped away the ills of the town ie.,rats, so will this man will "pipe away" the economic woes that will plague the world in the last days. He will win the earth with diplomacy - signified by the rider on the white horse in the book of revelations, who carried the bow but no arrows. He will demand for the souls of men in return and they will follow. While this song warns us about the anitichrist, Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven promoted the piper (the antichrist). Led Zeppelin's stairway to heaven asks that the church (the lady) follows the antichrist ("the piper will lead us to reason") - read my interpretation on "Stairway to Heaven" click here:

Loreena McKennitt – Dante's Prayer Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is what it says it is.. It is a PRAYER.
It is one of the most beautiful and heartfelt prayer most of us on this page have ever heard.
It is a heartfelt prayer to God, and is met with a response from God.
And what is God's response to every stanza of prayer presented?

'Cast your eyes to the Ocean, Cast your soul to the sea
when the dark night seems endless, please remember me'

They mean differently to everyone, and to me it means:
"Cast your eyes to the Ocean & cast your soul to the sea' - to free-fall (cast) trust in the grand scheme of the universe (ocean and sea).
As you gaze into the vastness of the universe (ocean) makes you to wonder where what you are going through fits in.
And as you pass through the rough seas, you wonder if there's any rhyme or reason to any of it.
And then God tells you, that even if your doubts and confusion seem endless, 'please remember me'
Be still and know that I am God.

Gillian Welch – Time (The Revelator) Lyrics 9 years ago
Time will reveal the kind of person you really are - even to yourself.
There are those who predict greatness for her (the fortune tellers) who keep her company.
But only time will tell as she weaves her music (the spindle whines) whether or not she betrays herself or is a pretender.
She heads back to her beachside shack with her music as she ponders on these things.

Gillian Welch – One More Dollar Lyrics 9 years ago
speaks of a young boy making a living.
working on a fruit farm, to support his loved ones.
once the winter sets in (freeze on the branches), he loses his job picking fruits.
he turns to gambling. (the dice came out at the bar downtown
I rolled and I took my chances)
goes broke, looking for another dollar, asking for a prayer.

Gillian Welch – The Way It Goes Lyrics 9 years ago
Great and insightful song.
the writer speaks of people she knew at one time or another.
They all start off being born with great potential and high hopes of the parents (everyone's buying baby clothes), and then somehow ended up not so well-off.
one buy good property and they commits suicide, another got into crime, got busted, some ended up drunk, others ditched for someone else etc etc etc.
That part about being buried with a 'pistol in my vest', I believe speaks of the reminder of the cruel world that had put the author into the ground.
the innocence is missed along the way of getting accustomed to this world, together with the loss of a gentle touch.
great song, sadly true for many cases. Just my opinion.

Bob Dylan – I and I Lyrics 10 years ago
Just my opinion, I & I constitutes the man's lower self and the spiritual Self. In a fallen state, "In creation where nature neither honors or forgives" and in a fallen state, "No man sees My face and lives".
the man wakes up with a stranger whom he loves and wonders life, and wants to get away and take a better look at things (go for a walk). But the man speaks of a time when he explored spiritually (untrodden path where the swift dont win the race) and now drifted away, has to face the consequences of his actions (eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth). In this state, he just looks out at the world and their hopes for a better future (two men walking and waiting for spring to come) and looks within himself, still in the dark and narrow lanes, yet pushing forward. He makes his stance clear, that he may not even be what he speaks but at the same time, he would be true to his heart (someone else speaking with his mouth, but listens to his heart) and true to his heart, he would think more for others than himself even in his fallen state (making shoes for others while he goes barefoot).
anyway, just my opinion. been there, done that, so that's how I see this song and relate to my perceived view of this song...
