Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Nature Boy Lyrics 14 years ago
Cracking song. Meaning? No clue. Is 'narrator's' father in 1st verse referring to nature with:

"He said, that in the end it is beauty
That is going to save the world, now"?

Certainly the beginning strikes me as encouragement to not get too down from civilisation's evils and enjoy the natural wonder.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Today's Lesson Lyrics 14 years ago
Great song. And interesting interpretations so far. Re: "jawbone of an ass", Samson (another Cave bible reference) weilds it to kill philistines - obviously 'philistine' is modernly used as one deficient in cuture or is 'up-tight' - does this apply to Mr Sandman? I wonder if this reference was meant to stretch this far...

The third verse is interesting, especially:
"We are violated in our sleep and we weep"
and
"We are told such monstrous lies"

These make me think of Mr Sandman as some kind of deceiving influence. Maybe Nick is bemoaning apathy (evident elsewhere on the album I think) and our weakness for believing what we're told?

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Night of the Lotus Eaters Lyrics 14 years ago
Interesting song and excellent explanations. The Lotus Eaters (or The Lotos-Eaters) is also a poem by Tennyson, apparently based of the passage referred to above in the Odyssey, so maybe Nick got the reference from here. I think I remember reading he quite likes Tennyson.

Morag: I agree the second verse is pretty opaque. Is he possibly referring to himself, performing (to the philistines and barbarians who don't care much for the message in his lyrics)?
