Primus – Hennepin Crawler Lyrics 12 years ago
Wow, thanks man. I honestly didn't think anyone would have a clue as to the point of this, or for the album for that matter. Your comment totally blew me away. I can't believe I missed the environmental theme that is carried throughout.

Sorry, I meant "being on their knees a lot".

Chairlift – Bruises Lyrics 12 years ago
I'd like to go with the "sweet and innocent" meaning of this song too, but the little things like "Every time I fell ON you" instead of "Every time I fell FOR you", and the super steamy music video really makes me think otherwise. Plus, who writes all those lines specifically about their knees a lot without noticing it could be taken the wrong way...

Rise Against – Architects Lyrics 13 years ago
The "setting the world on fire" line isn't the only reference to Against Me; there are quite a few scattered throughout the song. I don't think the song is directed towards Tom specifically, because it sounds more like Tim's speaking to the audience. I think Tim's just using Tom as the perfect example of someone who had strong "punk" values that faded with age. Basically I think he's pointing Tom out in hopes he might change (especially now he's not on Sire anymore), telling his fans that he's still in the fight and wont give up on them like so many other artists, and finally encouraging them not to give up either.

Rage Against the Machine – The Ghost of Tom Joad (Bruce Springsteen cover) Lyrics 13 years ago
All the comments discussing how it relates to the Grapes of Wrath are right on, but I just wanted to point out that this song is specifically talking about the Mexican immigrants coming into America. It's amazing to me how so many people watch or read Grapes and are disgusted with how the Joads were treated, but then turn a blind eye to the thousands of starving Latinos that have no where to turn - thanks mostly to our "New World Order" that drives so many farmers off their land.

In Flames – Cloud Connected Lyrics 13 years ago
There are a lot of ideas of what group of people the band is talking to, but I think it's directed to overly zealous religious types. The first four lines mention a dream world (one religion), fearing the outside (the "real" world), and fearing the next one (afterlife).

The next three lines ask is violence worth keeping your dream (one religion) alive. While the next two express the writer's answer.

Not sure about the next two lines, but the last two sound like the promise of salvation to those who are faithful to God (cloud connected).

The last part of the song sounds like a little bit of ridicule for being so withdrawn and selfish, then a warning that this way of thinking will not lead to any sort of progress.

This is a great song. Let's keep throwing ideas out!!

I Set My Friends On Fire – HxC 2-Step Lyrics 13 years ago
Haha! I think it's poking fun at the lame "sexy" club music that's so popular right now. I wouldn't take this too seriously...

I Set My Friends On Fire – Things That Rhyme With Orange Lyrics 13 years ago
Everyone's comments are great! I too think the song is about trying to fit in; not in a school setting however, but rather in relation to the music industry. Between their unique approach and all the bad criticism I don't think I'm too far off.

Also I think the name was cleverly chosen to describe being different also.

Against Me! – We're Breaking Up Lyrics 14 years ago
I think you're right on Turtlefox, great thinking! Some of the lines don't really make much sense if the song was about a couple, but total sense if it was Tom speaking to his old fans that have left him. For example:

"This is the only voice I know
These are the only words I have
This is the only way I know how to say
We're not in love anymore"

What an amazing, honest, and firm of way of expressing how he has changed, but still writes music from the heart. I know the ill feelings that come from a band changing, but the most important part of AM!'s music is their brutal honesty, which I feel they have kept. The band could have just kept writing the same ol' lyrics and still have gotten a great record deal; have you heard how catchy this music is? Instead we get an honest progression of thinking that many of us old "punks" getting into our late 20's are experiencing ourselves.

Against Me! – T.S.R. (This Shit Rules) Lyrics 14 years ago
No one's mentioned it yet, so I thought I'd throw it in...

T.S.R. is the company that owned Dungeons and Dragons before WotC bought it. Not saying that's what the song's about - it's pretty obvious it's about meth or coke - but maybe he used it as a subtle nod to a great game? Why else would you abreviate the title?

mewithoutYou – Messes of Men Lyrics 14 years ago
Awesome comments!!! Taken at face value the lyrics to this song hold up perfectly, but I couldn't help but think there was a deeper meaning. As soon as I started to read the posts about it being about sin it all clicked for me. Thanks guys, especially naptime1979.

Ships sailing has been used as a metaphor for life quite a bit in Christian ligature (C.S. Lewis) and music (Thrice), and I think that is what it symbolizes here. It's about how hard it is to live faithfully and without sin when we're no longer in the direct presence of God, kind of like the trials a sailor goes through staying faithful to his wife when he's out at sea.

I think the other posts have done a wonderful job explain all the little details, so I'll leave those out. I guess I just wanted to stress the whole metaphor part; I don't think people should take the words so literally they think Aaron is a creepy, adulterous sailor who goes after people's daughters!

AFI – Medicate Lyrics 14 years ago
There seems to be a great deal of anger/disappointment concerning this song due to the lyrical content being contrary to Davey's beliefs, but I think it all just a big misunderstanding of two points:

The first being the assumption this song is about Davey himself. Many artists will write in the first person, even if it's something they wouldn't do, in order to make the subject matter more personal and interesting. An example for all you OG AFI fans would be "Mini Trucks Suck". Do you think Davey really likes getting high or drinking beer, even though he's speaking in the first person? Of course not!

The second misunderstanding comes from not reading the whole song. When the song changes tempo, there's a dramatic shift in the lyrics as well. We learn that this sort of behavior isn't so great after all. With that in mind, when one goes back and rereads the song again it becomes obvious the song is AGAINST one-night stands, pointing out the damage it causes to one’s self-esteem and any chance of a meaningful relationship.

Suicide Silence – No Pity For A Coward Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the meaning to this one is pretty straight forward: "I have no pity for cowards, so just man up and just kill your self"! Some people seem to have a need to put a positive spin on everything in order for them to enjoy it, but Suicide Silence writes some of the most Nihilistic, bitter, offensive songs out there and is meant for an audience who appreciates brutal honesty rather than hopeful lies.

Also, it is quite clear he IS taking a swing at Christians with the "Can your God save you now?" line. Anyone who thinks otherwise should read up on Mitch's fall from grace or even listen to the rest of the CD.

Sorry to be such a downer to those who saw some sort of inspirational message from this song, but I do think there is still value in all this negativity.

Bush – Machinehead Lyrics 14 years ago
I was always told the song was about a girl getting off on a vibrator, but I much prefer the other interpretations people have offered. Thanks for all the great posts!
