The Panic Division – DWI Lyrics 10 years ago
Can't believe there are no comments. I *love* this band so much, and this song just drips with emotion. It's obviously about a break-up; she left, maybe slept with someone else, and he's bitter, angry, and heartbroken all at once.

I'm not sure about some of the lyrics, and some are definitely wrong, but I don't have my liner notes anymore, and all the other sites have the exact same version. But either way, just *hearing* this song tells you everything.

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness – Lights Lyrics 11 years ago
So this song came on, and for some reason I felt compelled to re-analyze it. So I put on my studio headphones, tweaked the EQ, and cranked it, trying to get it right. A few corrections to my corrections, and I'm more confident (though still not 100%):

If all you really ask in return is a little faith,
Sit yourself up, or lie back down, agitated and anxious,
Waste the entire day, try to come up for air,
For the last time, disappear, very moving.

It's the last time, it's the last time,
It's the last time, it's the last time.

There's no stopping now, you switch back on,
While we won, you've turned your back, disabled,
I know that we're due for something to change,
Everyone's gone when you finally look around.

It's the last time, it's the last time,
It's the last time, it's the last time.

It's the last time, it's the last time,
It's the last time, it's the last time.

When I see you down,
When I see you down,
When I see you down,
When I see you down,
When I'm high, I try...
Yeah, I die tonight (still not sure about this one)
When I see you down,
When I see you down.

Rocky Votolato – Makers Lyrics 12 years ago
Formatted to better fit the traditional "verse, chorus, verse" structure.

Death keeps calling me,
She's gonna set me free.
No more sunshine sidewalk streets,
Or misery.

Like she did for you,
Oh Allen, how you suffered.
Lower East Side apartment,
We stayed up late.

The bones inside your mind where all broken,
And the keys that opened any answers were all stolen.
Filling and refilling up the glass with Maker's,
We both agreed,
The final moment,
The sweetest remedy,
To ever be delivered!
Heaven or heavenless,
We're all headed for the same sweet darkness.

So she came for you,
Well I guess you wanted her to,
Now in the safety of a coffin,
Rest, you're through.

No more debts or memories,
No more heart, blood, or skin on teeth,
Final dosage to set you free,
You escaped.

Regarding waking13giants' post, I just read Kaddish, and I can definitely agree that this song has many direct references to lines within it. Still, as much as I like to know the "truth" of what the artist meant, I still like the alternate interpretation better: the friend ("Allen") overdosed, either deliberately or semi-deliberately, and Rocky is recalling their conversations about how death is what sets us free from the burden of life. Despite the references to Kaddish (and to "Allen"), I think that fits the whole song better.

Still beautiful, and probably my favorite Rocky song.

*pierces through you, not "pisses" through you. Beautiful song, like most of his.

Lots of corrections on this one...

If all you really ask in return is a little thanks,
Suit yourself, though, while I back down, agitated and anxious (not sure about this line)
Waste the entire day, try to come up for air,
For the last time, disappear, barely moving.

It's the last time, it's the last time,
It's the last time, it's the last time.

There's no stopping now, you switch back on
While we walk you turned your back, disabled,
I know that we're due for something to change
Everyone's gone when you finally look around.

It's the last time, it's the last time,
It's the last time, it's the last time.

It's the last time, it's the last time,
It's the last time, it's the last time.

When I see you down
When I see you down,
When I see you down,
When I see you down,
When I'm high, I try...
Yeah, I die tonight (not sure about this one)
When I see you down,
When I see you down.

Probably my favorite song of theirs sonically, but the muddled vocals and unclear lyrics across the album are a real shame.

Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics 14 years ago
"He said, 'really, I just wanna dance'..."

That is maybe the saddest line in an ES song to me. I think this song is definitely about his former self, when he was on drugs; the song addresses who he had become as a drug addict, told from both sides (as the addict, and the recovering). But that line... just sounds like a plea to the "real" him, the one who was always there. That simple, inexplicable joy of dancing when everything has lost meaning, and you've lost yourself in drugs.

The "fond farewell", I think, refers to that feeling of missing a drug that a former addict always has, no matter how bad things were when he/she was using, or how long he/she's been clean (so I've heard). It's what tempts long-sober people back for "just one hit", because they're so desperate to get that feeling just once more.

Elliott Smith – Pitseleh Lyrics 14 years ago
I disagree about this being a song to his younger self... it doesn't really fit. I think it's very much a song to a former lover, one whom he broke up with because he was so depressed ("angry").

The first verse, ("I'll tell you why I... Kept it from you, Pitseleh") definitely sounds like suicide. He's basically saying, "I'm glad you're not in my life anymore, because I want to kill myself and don't want it to hurt you" ("Looking down the barrel... make the noise that I've kept so quiet").

The whole song is about him feeling incapable of loving this girl the way she deserved. He got involved, even though he knew he shouldn't ("First time I saw you..."), and ultimately his insecurities got him to give up the thing he loved.

Elliott left his art open to interpretation, and of course this is just my interpretation, but I think sometimes people try to go a little too deep. Of course, my usual disclaimer applies: people interpret things as they see them themselves, and this song is pretty much *word for word* a song I would write if I had his talent. So maybe my interpretation's a little biased...

Elliott Smith – Everything Means Nothing to Me Lyrics 14 years ago
Not sure I agree with the previous posts about this song... I think it's a song about nihilism. The first verse is simply telling of a person/people who strive to achieve great things to be remembered and honored (The first line: "Someone found the future as a statue..).

The second verse he's referring to himself (obviously), back when he used to care about things and used to "conform" to traditional ideals of success (last line: "From a time when he was everything he's supposed to be").

Of course, we all interpret things based on how we see them ourselves. A simple song, yet so meaningful; and when the music swells, it sends shivers down my spine. I love Elliott's music so much.
