Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I always thought it was about a male sugar baby but after listening tonight and following the lyrics this song could be about someone contemplating going awol. The opening line sounds like someone who is in a helicopter with the fuzzys in his stomach, who had second thought maybe after going to vietnam even though his dad said it was crazy to do. When are you gonna come down When are you going to land I should have stayed on the farm I should have listened to my old man 2nd verse: Referring to the fact that he was drafted and the did not voluntarily enroll, he has finally realized the war was just a game and does not want to be gunned down by bullets or paralyzed. You know you can't hold me forever I didn't sign up with you I'm not a present for your friends to open This boy's too young to be singing the blues chorus: He's decided to go awol his reasoning though he was drafted its not as glamorous as he thought. He realized its nothing more than a street that eventually became lined with disabled vets that people had turned their backs on. He was sold a dream of heroism and a place in society as a gentlemen when in reality that is not what he has seen happen nor what he thinks will happen to him. If he hunts anything its going to be on his farm, he is going back to a simpler lifer. So goodbye yellow brick road Where the dogs of society howl You can't plant me in your penthouse I'm going back to my plough Back to the howling old owl in the woods Hunting the horny back toad Oh I've finally decided my future lies Beyond the yellow brick road 3rd verse: He could be reflecting on what his dad told him, or trying to convince someone to go with him. It sounds like the person is very inexperience and does not know how to get out of trouble. The vodka and tonic being used to ease the pain of having to get up and walk or run after the plane is shut down. What do you think you'll do then I bet that'll shoot down your plane It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics To set you on your feet again 4th verse: Perhaps he wrote a letter when he left or he is telling someone but essentially there are a lot of people who join the military when they feel as though they have nothing else to do or as a way to earn money*. At this point he realizes someone who sells you a dream in order to get you do do something that is wrong is the lowest of the low. He is done letting the government pimp him. Maybe you'll get a replacement There's plenty like me to be found Mongrels who ain't got a penny Sniffing for tidbits like you on the ground *please do not argue with me on reasons people join the military, dispute or agree with the concept of the post and keep it moving. |
