Jason Mraz – Love For A Child Lyrics

The first verse sets up the story.
“There's a picture... yard.” is just a set up for the listener.
“Couple steamy in the car” That's one of his parents having an affair. Not exactly in a car though.
“Was I too young” He witnessed the infidelity but didn't realize what was going on because of his age.
“At the pool... forgot your name.” The parent that committed the adultery did it under the influence and the pool and hitting his/her head is a metaphor for forgetting who he/she is and not caring that he/she is married or has children.
“Bottom by the drain... memory's ashamed.” He/she is ashamed of what he/she did.
“What about taking this...probably because.”Talks about when a child parent's get divorced, the child is forced to mature faster than a normal child would . The child loses most of their innocence that most wish they could get back.
“When you're young...love for a child.” Talks about during a divorce, the child's feeling are mostly disregarded and it's left up to the parents to decide. It has nothing to do with the love for a child, but the child wishes it did.
“Was it mom... or the other way around.” Can be interpreted in two ways. One: His dad put his mom on her ass by cheating and then leaving. Two: His dad put his dad on his ass by cheating and losing everything he loved. I personally like option two.
“Far too old” When you grow up in a broken home, you need to forget as time goes on, if you don't you'll be miserable. Especially in a infidelity situation. You need to get to an age where you don't care about it anymore.
“Kinda nice... birthday cakes.” I think this part is really funny. He's using sarcasm in my opinion. Talking about how you have so much time for yourself when you have divorced parents cause you parents are always busy.
“Taking drugs... to start complaining.” How his parents neglected him which allowed him to use drugs at an early age and have sex at an early age, and they grades part is an example of how they neglected him.
