Peggy Lee – Is That All There Is? Lyrics 10 years ago
But under the surface poignancy there is an ultimate optimism. Very subtle but this makes it what it is- a great, perceptive song. If that's all there is then what better reason to live your life to the full- to enjoy it? Lovely song.

Elvis Costello – Jack of All Parades Lyrics 11 years ago
The song contrasts (in general) the way love used to be in the old days. Much more fidelity, one to one lasting relationships. True love and faithfulness. The character is a 'Jack the lad,' moving from one girl to the next without real commitment, love. He also compares modern love with 'the fleshpots' i.e. escorts/prostitution world where sex is paid for.
Then he meets someone he truly loves and wants to commit (be 'one true heart) but she is very wary of the way men are and might well not trust and walk out the door at any moment.
Now he truly has met someone he wants to love and he fears it is not going to happen.

Possibly the most perfect, neat piece of songwriting ever. Combines, humour, meaning and form into one great song.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Bless His Ever Loving Heart Lyrics 12 years ago
Certainly a bit yukky and didn't of course make the record (the best he ever did btw) but love the line -
'and beauty lies exhausted in the street.' I wait for that line every time I play it.

Oh and the comment about 'awe.' Spot on!
Who was it who stupidly said atheists must have an absence of a sense of awe?
I'm totally in awe of this song.

countgrassi

Excellent interpretation and pretty much the same as mine. Obviously its actual meaning does matter to me. Think I was just making a brief intrusion. You've fleshed it out.
My most popular moniker is countgrassi too.
Have you 'done' Eric The Gardener yet?

John Prine – Taking A Walk Lyrics 12 years ago
It's "found a card in my pocket." It's "beyond my mortal/moral frame."

Anyway absolutely amazing lyrics with world weary insights and great humour. One of my favourites.

Would appreciate knowing who the girl in the whitehouse refers to. I'm british and someone American out there will probably have more idea.

AS in many Nick songs..... HE KILLED HER! Bit like Nobody's Baby Now. Possibly.

Randy Newman – Red Bandana Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is SO funny. Bloke thinks he's cool having been influenced by trip to 'hip' California. Wears a bandana- which looks pretentious at the best of times. And the bandana is all his friends can see when he proudly returns home.
Excellent.

Randy Newman – I Think It's Going To Rain Today Lyrics 14 years ago
My God, are most of these comments written by Americans! Why are you on about rain and clouds and overflowing?

The whole song is METAPHORICAL!

It's poetic, ironic and isn't what it seems as with all of this great songwriter's songs (unless he's writing for Toy story or that ilk).

Yes, it's obviou sly about alienation in modern society. He says so much in such a sparse style and that's what makes him brilliant.

The only line you might be close to getting the actual meaning is: 'Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles with frozen styles to chase love away.'Fashion, botox anorexic young girls, artificiality. Nothing warm and genuine.

These lyrics are SO poetic, SO brilliant in their form and imagery that, for me, its actual meaning doesn't really matter. To me: It is using a balloon ride as a metaphor for our search for meaning in life. It's stating our insignificance in the whole scheme of things -"please forgive this brief intrusion."

The music is gorgeous and complements the ethereal lyrics. I would have it played at my funeral...if I wasn't an atheist or if I had a bit more spirituality in me.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – The Weeping Song Lyrics 15 years ago
Think it has usual strong Nick Cave religious overtones. To me it is about how organised religion makes people so subserviant and miserable. About original sin and no matter what people do they're going to do the wrong thing.
It's humourous of course - the whole idea that all mankind is sad and even the innocent free spirits (children) will be weeping when they grow up.
I may be wrong of course but this is what it says to me.
He is a brilliant poetic lyricist

cioni

Thanks for that. Excellent interpretation. Not sure if N C's meaning but wont be far off.

My current favourite song. So emotive.

Think the suicide interpretation prob wrong. It's more just railing against how meaningless the modern world is to someone in the depths of despair after a failed love affair. He sees the world around him as surreal images as he's so wrapped up in misery and is seeking spiritual comfort.

It's more describing how he sees the world as abject, and the specific lines you interpret are interpreted too literally. E.G. "I stood there invisible in the panicking crowds" means that though everything is of heightened intensity to him, no one notices him because they're just getting on with their (pointless) own lives.

Anyway, absolutely brilliant!!!
