Taking Back Sunday – Liar (It Takes One to Know One) Lyrics 14 years ago
This has Lord of the Flies written all over it.

The first verse is about arriving on the island, with the children's inner savagery, hidden by societal constraints (our secrets they are tailored trouble). The children originally trust in their leader, Ralph(your spotless instincts are valid) and coexist relatively peacefully (we coexist). Also the "draped loose now around your hips" line probably refers to the conch shell carried by Ralph, which symbolises order and civility in the novel..i think he may carry it on a string around his hips? The children work at building shelter, finding food etc but are increasingly lazy, and there is a hint of things to come (We'll see what all gets done). They will be on the island for nearly a month (26 days).

The lead-in doesn't seems to be alot related to LOTF, and refers to confusing both addiction and drama for love. The argument of the song seems to be in reaction to an illusion of a loving relationship the protagonist is involved in. "You can't tell me you don't beg" seems to be an allusion to the fact that the protagonist has little faith in the partner's morality.

The chorus refers to the lie of civilisation, admitting that "we're all choir boys at best", with their qualities being arrogance and intrusiveness that morphs into something more sinister in the strain of the environment.

The second verse obviously refers to the island, possibly the line "that you swear by, still barely can afford" referring the protagonist's partner making some argument about the story that he or she does not back up in their everyday life. The next bit is asking how long will order hold (how long will this hold), should our natures be any different in different environments (well is it any different now that we are here), and the conflict and exploitation of leadership and fear of the unknown, personified in LOTF as the beast (don't you go here , not here , now now..it moves it moves).

Love it TBS :)

Brand New – Jaws Theme Swimming Lyrics 15 years ago
I beleive its about drug use of a mother and how it causes her to lose her daughter (either literally or figuratively). The mother thought she could do drugs and not get too far in, but it got her entwined, much like a shark that is hidden under the water until it bites you..Jaws theme swimming. She is rarely at home for her children, and it seems like the daughter is probably older, like a teenager.

In a car outside, we stalk the idle kind
*Either refers to sitting around idly doing drugs in a car, so the kids can't see , or maybe waiting outside a dealer's for pot, which is known to make you lazy*
If you're leaving just let me know
*The daughter is saying this. She's accepted that her mother will just leave sometimes, so she's casually saying just let me know when your going out*
Tobacco and peppermint, dusting for fingerprints
*Imlplies guilt, maybe the mother smokes and uses mints to cover the smell. But the daughter has done her detective work and knows what going on*
A film in her eyes from the glow
*The glow is the feeling drugs gives her, the film on her eyes is the listlessness associated with it*

Some rules are made with all intentions to break and she defends it with a warned rationale
*She thinks she has a hold on her drug use, and she can still function as a mother*
And I've seen what happens to the wicked and proud when they
decide to try to take on the throne for the crown
*She's too proud to see she's going down*

And we learn as we age
*The daughter has learnt about drugs and how they affect her mother as she has gotten older, and is maybe saying the mother should know better by her age*
Wait for nothing and my body still aches
*But her life seems empty and she craves drugs*
And you take 'cause they give
*She takes it just because its there, and it helps at the time*
Though I love you and my body it leaks like a sieve
*I love you anyway, but your involvement in that world makes me cry (leak :P)or possibly bleed if going with the suicide theory*

When it got cold outside, smoke beneath the playground lights
*She's in a park smoking pot*
If you're coming home just let me know
*She wished her mother would come home*
Sucking on your breath mint, dissected and stuck with pins
*She may use breath mints to cover the smell of pot from her children, and she's coming down from the drugs painfully*
A film in her eyes from the glow
*See above*

Concrete and water, she's looking for her daughter
*She goes out to look for her daughter in the park (concrete) and its raining, because she has realised she is missing*
at midnight in torrential downpour
*See above*
And everything I said about how messed your head is
*The daughter has had fights with the mother about her drug use*
We're cut up and left in bits and pieces on the ground
*The mother's drug use has left the children messed up and feeling unwanted*

Take the picture from the wall when you think that nothing matters
*This is the daughter saying when you care so much about drugs and so little you might as well pretend we don't exist*
Take the picture from the frame and it's a long ways to the floor
*Just throw us on the floor*
Cut your finger on the edge 'cause it's sharper than they told you
*You thought you had control over this drug use, but its a lot harder than they told you and its got you hooked*
Take a leap from out the window cause it's way too far to go through the door
*Either the daughter has committed suicide, or she's saying you just take the easy way out of doing drugs even though its dangerous, instead of working through the issues and getting help, which is a longer, harder way*

Anberlin – Feel Good Drag Lyrics 15 years ago
I have a slightly different slant on the song but essentially similar;

"I'm here for you," she said
and we can stay for awhile,
my boyfriend's gone
we can just pretend.
*So he meets this girl who's cheating obviously*

Lips that need no introduction
*She does it alot, and probably she's known around the place*
Now who's the greater sin
*I feel like here he's referring to other sins -drugs, lies, etc, and asking which is the worst out of what she does?*
Your drab eyes seem to invite
*She's attractive to him, but the use of the phrase "drab eyes" either indicates she's high or that because of her sin she holds less attraction for him*
(tell me darling) Where do we begin.
*Here he's sort of saying darling where do I even begin in trying to figure out what is your worst sin? or where do I even begin in explaining whats wrong with what you're doing*

CHORUS- She never had any real care for him, it was over before it began. Its mostly self-explanatory, her crutch is probably the buzz she gets from reeling guys in.

Everyone in this town
is seeing somebody else
Everybody's tired of someone
our eyes wander for help
*Self explanatory he is losing faith in society*

Prayers that need no answer now
I'm tired of who I am
*He's frustrated at himself for falling for her tricks, perhaps his prayers need no answer because he knows he brings it upon himself*
You were my greatest mistake
I fell in love with your sin
Your littlest sin
*He feels guilty for being associated with this girl, or perhaps not being able to help her out of her own mess. He is attracted to her because of her promiscuity, which is her smallest sin in comparison to drugs, lies, cheating.*

Failure is your disease
*She lives to fail and thrives in sin*
You want my outline drawn
*If he stays near her she will destroy him either by causing him to sin or by him falling in love with her and watching her destroy herself, it reminds me of the brand new quote "If you let me have my way I swear I'll tear you apart"*
You were my greatest failure
*Again failure in saving her from herself*
Discourse your saving song
*Discourse means communicating, she is probably very good at acting cute and drawing guys in. Guys don't really like girls who are absolute dirty hoes lol so this allows her to draw guys in and still have people like her. It saves her from looking like a complete sinner*

Thats what I think the song means anyway...I sort of relate it to myself so its probably a bit biased. Its hard to explain why people act in self-destructive ways but you do get a buzz from drawing guys in and getting them to care about you then sort of tossing them aside. I feel like many guys including my ex have this opinion towards me.. they have cared about me and wished they could have saved me from some of the things I do. I am sort of good at acting cutesy as well xD

I like the line "I fell in love with your sin". I feel like it refers to how guys love it when chicks will randomly sleep with them, but the next day they'll just have no real respect and laugh with their friends about what hoes they are. The thing that they like about them is also the thing that they despise.

Moral of the Story- Don't trust a hoe :P

Manchester Orchestra – I've Got Friends Lyrics 15 years ago
I like all these interpretations..I guess its just one of those songs lol
I think it was saying "you are not alive when I need you" not "you and I will ride"

I believe it is a song about someone who is rock bottom. Sometimes you thrive on the feeling of spiralling down "dirty on the ground in what i need""the dirtier the sound the best I breathe", especially in relation to a death, as it can feel like the worse state you are in, the more you loved that person. It about someone who lies (2nd line) and who has driven people away (3rd,4th line and chorus). These people may pity him but his depression makes them uncomfortable.

He needs a reason why this person has died, and he needs a reason to keep living. He needs this person to be with him very much. It may even refer to drinking/drug taking to dull the pain "when I need you, I need 'it' quickly".

I love the emotion in his voice on the line "I need another reason why, I need another reason tell me to breathe".

Manchester Orchestra – Wolves at Night Lyrics 15 years ago
I believe that the line "I'm like a virgin losing a child" is a beautiful piece of imagery relating to loneliness.

If you think about it, losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to a mother, and a virgin has never had that closeness with another person- so its sort of like double loneliness? This person has never had the love of a man or of a child.

Also the line about Christian language must be a political statement...perhaps about the war in Iraq..no matter how they harp on about God and "helping" people its a disaster?

British India – I Said I'm Sorry Lyrics 15 years ago
I can see how people say this is about fame but I had a slightly different interpretation.. maybe a drunken one-night stand?

The first verse refers to the fact of their fairly low-grade fame. Underweight could refer to insecurities about his body. He hooks up this girl and it feels very fake and empty, but nevertheless he sleeps with her and the next morning he's ashamed and obviously..sorry.

The next verse MUST be a reference to Brand New
"It used to be the only reason I breathed, but now it's just choking me up" the whole line is an exact quote. The song it refers to talks about sex and emptiness. He was obviously pushy towards the girl when he was drunk "Don't say no, just shut up and swallow it"

So he wakes up the next day dehydrated (hungover) and out of place at this girls house. I'm guessing this girl is a bit dumb (peroxide=blonde) and he sees that this has been a huge mistake. His confession is that he doesn't want any relationship.

The next part, in addition to the Brand New reference, which is about a guy losing his virginity, makes me think this could have been his first time. His first sexual experience has been determined in fifteen minutes. Alternatively it could refer to the girl being pregnant, which could explain the pro-choice reference.

Thoughts?
