Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics 9 years ago
We can all agree this song is about finding salvation in a lover. For a lot of people, especially Catholics, sex, love, and god are all tangled. Nuns get married to Jesus, for example. And the Catholic Church teaches that all sexual acts that don't lead to a child--meaning gay sex, masterbation, or using birth control--are sins. But it's a natural urge...

I read that Hozier was really inspired by James Joyce, who grew up with Catholicism being shoved down his throat, all the while trying to figure out where he stood on certain issues. That's something I completely get (17 years of Catholic school). It's hard to reconcile what you learn in religion class to what feels good, what feels natural, and what feels outdated. Basically, a kid raised in a strict Irish Catholic household will have a hard time reconciling his thoughts on religion, sex, and ethics.

What I'm getting at is I think the character is singing about a woman, not a man. There are the obvious pronouns in the song, but trust me: a straight guy has quite a challenge trying to figure this all out after what he's been taught and what he feels. On one hand, it doesn't matter if he finds salvation and love in the arms of a woman (like I think) or a man (like the haunting video says). But on the other, I do like interpreting literature and I think it's pretty obvious he's singing about a woman.

I think of this song as two sides of the same person talking. There's the really discouraged, frustrated, lonely, upset person (the verses) who wants to just give up because life is too hard. Then there's the voice of reason (the chorus) reminding themselves to calm down and take things one step at a time.

Maroon 5 – Misery Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the song itself is about a relationship that isn't working, but even though he knows it's not working, it's still hard to just walk away from. He's so in love with her that even though he knows she's bad for him, he can't just quit her. He's in misery to be with her but in misery when he's not with her, and he thinks she's playing with his heart.

Specifically, in the first verse, I think he's trying to end it but she won't let him (So scared of breaking it but YOU won't let it bend). And that's why I like the video--if you've ever ended a relationship, you might feel like you've been physically beat up, even if you haven't been.

I have to say that I love the different versions of this song. The original is strong, the acoustic is sad, and this is more righteous. And if you've ever gone through a situation where people are out to get you (i.e fame, work, etc.), you've gone through all those emotions.

Oh, and I think that by repeating, "I can get by in the meantime by myself," he's telling you how much he's hurting. He's trying to convince himself that he'll be OK. Otherwise, why would he keep repeating that phrase?

By far their sexiest song. Love it.

The Killers – Sam's Town (Abbey Road Version) Lyrics 15 years ago
I think in this version of the song, he sounds sad about his situation--a small town with little hope to get out. In the original version, he sounds angry. The character has the right to feel both angry and sad about his situation, hence the different versions.

The Killers – A Crippling Blow Lyrics 15 years ago
I've been listening to this song lately, and while I can't interpret the lyrics in their entirety, I'll put it to you this way: recently I've had some trouble at work. My bosses are blowing something minor completely out of proportion, and now I have lawyers and union reps on my side fighting to get my job back. This whole process could take a year.

My point is that when I listen to this song, I think of my situation: They dealt me a crippling blow, but I can get by in the meantime by myself. I won't be calm (this is my reputation and career we're talking about), but I'll get by.

I don't know if that's what they were going for, but that's what I hear.
