Jackson Browne – The Pretender Lyrics 10 years ago
This has been one of my favorite songs for as long as I can remember and I've always equated the "pretender" as the hippie you speak of that conforms but has the introspection to realize his conformity. Your interpretation is all that I believe the song to be...but have never put into words. Almost 30 years later, I believe the song still has relevance...we are told one thing and when the lies surface, our idealism is chipped away bit by bit. I also love the double meanings of his word choice in this song...esp "And believe in whatever may lie
In those things that money can buy" LIE!!! The big lie that if you do the right things, get an education, get married, have 2.5 kids, make $300,000 per year, have a beach house, nanny, etc... you will be happy. Didn't work for me....legal tender only brings happiness if love and purpose are present as well. Do you know the Eagles "Last Resort"? Like to know your thoughts on that song...I use it and "Pretender" to teach a poetry unit...as well as some others.

Train – Drops of Jupiter Lyrics 13 years ago
yes it is! Pat Monahan said that this song came to him in a dream shortly before a last chance meeting with Sony. They had met and passed on Train & first cd-basically passed on "Meet Virginia". Train got friends and family to back that cd and got another meeting with Sony-although head of Sony was still totally uninterested...then "Drops.." came to him in a dream about his mom who'd recently passed away and who he felt like left some dreams unrealized to raise he and his siblings...he was the "Last of Seven"... And this is how she came to him in the dream-"tracing her way through the constellation" as she "checks out Mozart while she does Tae Bo". The "five hour phone conversations" were during her illness when he was on the road. He would perform and then talk to her all night on the phone...Love it more because of meaning..He said he was reluctant to reveal meaning because he liked for the meaning of his art to be left up to the listener...but who this song is about was his most frequently asked question, he felt inclined to answer once and for all..
