Metric – The List Lyrics 13 years ago
I saw that right away; well rather I knew I had heard that line before, but I couldnt place it for a while, then was watching Battlestar Galactica and one of the main songs is a cover of All Along the Watchtower. It seems Metric frequently references classic rock.

The Strokes – Two Kinds Of Happiness Lyrics 13 years ago
There are two lines that I believe need correction.

The first is, "Love conquers alter-joy." (I am a drunk english major so this kinda bothered me.) I belive it was more to be understood as "Love conquers...(an in my opinion this is a train of thought, showing that the latter word is better)alters joy." as to say that love chances joy into something higher than joy.

The other is, "One you laugh and one makes you kill."

I think it says, "One, you'd give your life, and one makes you kill."

I know we are all trying to figure it out right now, as it just came out,

but I believe the first lines are

Happiness is two different things:
what you take, and then what you bring.
One is pleasure, one is the flame.
One's devotion one's just deranged.

Brandon Flowers – Only The Young Lyrics 13 years ago
I like where some of you went with this song, though I dont think he is contemplating the idea of suicide. I think he is saying that only young people can start over without hurting anyone, the young have time to start over and find happiness(the sun) again. And the lyrics, "Are you looking for a sign? Or are you caught up in the lie?" suggests that the person is too afraid to leave the life they hate behind without some specific guide to become the person that want to be and the idea of being caught in a lie a suggest the person believes that they cant change(they lie being that they cant change).

Gorillaz – On Melancholy Hill Lyrics 14 years ago
Yeah, my favorite line, as others have mentioned already, "You can't get what you want, but you can get me." And yeah, I think it's about a guy who is in love with a friend that can't have the guy she wants (I kinda paint in a meaning that she always ends up in bad relations, but that is just cause I totally feel I am in this situation with a friend of mine) so he is just dreaming that she will settle for him; also he truly believes that he could make her happy if she gave him a chance.

Very heart-wrenching song, just because I relate to it very much. And the music itself is great, and Damon is so good at this kind of depressing song; I am a hug Blur fan as well, makes me think of the album "13"

The Good, the Bad and the Queen – 80's Life Lyrics 14 years ago
treefingers, I agree it's not an original sound if you just looking at by comparing bands, but I am glad you recognize that it is Albarn leading all three bands. And I think this is his sound. If you know your Blur history, one reason they broke up was because Albarn was trying to control the direction of the band too much.

I think most song writers have a sound, and this is ALbarn's, and I really like it.

The Sounds – Night After Night Lyrics 14 years ago
Like some people said, I think its actually the singer speaking to herself, but I think it's she is trying to convince herself from a relationship that went bad.

The first stanza of the song is a prelude to her breaking up, and the rest is the way she feels after breaking up, the longing to be back again despite her knowing that it is for the best; if you have ever felt this way about someone, I have, it's a feeling I am too familiar with. I like listening to this song when accompanied by Queen of Apology, another song about regret in my mind.

Someone said they liked to slow version better cause it was sadder; yea it is. But I like the fast version because I think it reflects the mask she is trying to put over her feeling, she is trying to convince herself everything will change tomorrow by being upbeat, but in the end she is still gunna feel the same tomorrow and she doesnt know why she cant move on.

Van Halen – Can't Stop Lovin' You Lyrics 14 years ago
Just wanted to make it clear, "Not Fade Away" by the Rolling Stones is actually a cover of a blues track...Don't get me wrong I love the Stone (and this song and VH as well), but "Not Fade Away" is one of the many examples from early rock of bands ripping off classic blues blues riffs and songs.

The Rakes – That's the Reason Lyrics 14 years ago
I was just as stumped on this song for a while because he slurs the words together so closely but I think I figured out a lot after one car ride home so I'll post the the song the way I hear it with some changes as well as adding to the blanks, with some parts still missing:

Mind you, a lot of this is blurred together when he sings it, but I think it makes a lot of sense in the context of the song

It's late but I'm not finished yet
I'm stuck like a half smoked cigarette
but too late and so are the chances of it happenin'
she's in a group, she might be leaving soon
for a club or just a taxi home
I'd like to be in a taxi by her
but I'll take a chance, make my move
Couldn't knock back or they would all see (??? on this one)
my mates and her's, it would be ugly
or maybe it'll work and this night will be
more than just jabber to my mates and me;
She just leaving holes in your memory.
??? ??? ??? to a ??? ??? ???
instead I'll be back in her loft under the sheets
with TV on and she will smell good
we could even make it work, the world would be alright for once

(That's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I ain't going home tonight
(that's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I ain't going home tonight
(that's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I asked her for a light
(that's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I ain't going home tonight

Ya I have to use your toothbrush
I know that you may not like that much
but stop for a second Freda, "Why you ????"
most girl's names mean blah blah blah

(That's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I ain't going home tonight
(that's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I ain't going home tonight
(that's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I asked her for a light
(that's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I ain't going home tonight

(That's the reason)
then you'd wake up
(that's the reason)
you were holding my hand
(that's the reason)
fall asleep again
(that's the reason)
big smile on my face

(That's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I ain't going home tonight
(that's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I ain't going home tonight
(that's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I asked her for a light
(that's the reason, that's the reason, that's the reason)
I ain't going home tonight

And that's the way it sounded to me

Nada Surf – Paper Boats Lyrics 14 years ago
I actually didn't think about it this way until I read your comment; long story short, I was thinking this was about a bad breakup, until I read this, and I realized I had the same break-up to many times to count...for the same reason.

And I realized, I am the it's the same person I keep breaking up with the first time, IE, I have been hung up on the original girl for too long

The Killers – Happy Birthday Guadalupe! Lyrics 14 years ago
I can see how you might interpret it this way, and in fact I could make even a stronger argument that would compliment your thesis, but the only glaring problem I see is that Virgin de la Guadalupe is a representation of the Virgin Mary in Mexico and is very highly regarded there. Happy Birthday, Guadalupe just doesnt seem appropriate to say Happy Birthday to Christ.

Yes rossyvictor, and I could be mistaken I think they might have been on the show that show cases band filmed at Abbey Road, aptly named "Live at Abby Road". I could be mistaken cause I thought I saw an episode where it listed the Killers, but I didnt watch it, had more pressing matters.

The Killers – Spaceman Lyrics 15 years ago
As a person who has tried the dark path of suicide, but has come back, I feel song really could be about suicide. It almost gives me shivers thinking about how accurate it really is.

One of my favorite parts is:

But now I'm back at home and
I'm looking forward to this life I live
You know it's gonna haunt me
So hesitation to this life I give

I still can see the scars on my arm, and so can everyone else, so it still haunts me, but I look forward to life now. But like it says, I am still hesitant about how people will react when they see the scars.

But I dunno, this is just my opinion.

The Killers – Why Do I Keep Counting? Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with mlfm256. To me it seems, Flowers writes a lot of stuff based on a direct incident that affected him, in this case his fear of flying, but whether he intends to or not( I hope he does) all the songs can be applied to much more deeper meanings.

I think, like he said, its about someone reaching a point where they feel they cant go on, and is desperate, and trying to find a reason to go on. And he is telling himself, if I can get out of this will I change my ways, will I go on. He is calling to his father, whether God or his real father (like a child crying for help cause thats what hes been reduced to), to help him get out of what hes gotten himself into.

I kinda agree with tef, although I am in the opposite role, a la I am the obsessed b/f--or used to be I should say, lol.

Anyways, ya its a really good song, and when I heard it kinda brought me back to that time. But overall the song isnt really the best the killers can be, especially with the release of Day & Age. Its a simple song, but still a good song. Personally I believe The Killers are on their way to be one the great bands of this era, but what do I know.

The Killers – A Dustland Fairytale Lyrics 15 years ago
Although I totally understand its about his mom and dad, and it totally makes sense once you know that, I still cant help having my own take on it. I simply can see the story applying to any of a number reasons, and thats the beauty of it. It is just an American fairy tale, or more of an American tragedy in my mind. It builds into a fairytale romance, but in the end "the good girls die"

The Killers – Soft Surrender (Where Is She?) Lyrics 15 years ago
I think its solely from the point of the view of the mother. The intro:

A police car
Was outside your house today
I haven’t seen you in a couple of days
They knocked on your door
And then they went away
Your mother looked scared
But she didn’t cry
She didn’t cry"

Is supposed to be the murderers (b/f) house, the police came, knocked on the door, took the murderer, and left. The murderer's mother looked scared, because her son is being accused of murder. But she didnt cry, because she was mostly confused about what was going on. This shows that the murderers mother doesnt know the grief of the victims mother and family, as demonstrated by:

All of these tears that we've cried
All of these tears that we've cried

The mother doesnt want to believe her daughter is dead (Follow suit shake your head, tell me that it is a lie). And she doesnt want the killer to die necessarily but she wants him to die alone and scared like her daughter did. The mother feels its her fault that she let her daughter be with him(On one hand, I've got myself to blame).

Hope that helps convince some people.

Anyways, its a shame that this song my never be officially released. Although it is commendable that The Killers are choosing to honor the families wishes by not releasing it, they also need to remember great bands dont skate around controversy.

Eagles – Tequila Sunrise Lyrics 15 years ago
I think its a pretty simple song for anyone who has ever felt the way the man has. You are real lucky that you havent felt that way.

Its about a guy who is infatuated with a girl who doesnt even know he exists, or maybe just isnt aware he has feelings for her. He drinks thinking it will make him get the guts to talk to her (Take another shot of courage, but the right words never come, you just feel numb) and in the end he just ends up trying to drink his way through his misery. He ends up just getting drunk and waking up to a world in which he is still alone, drinking solves nothing. (Its another tequila sunrise but this world still looks the same).

The Killers – Joy Ride Lyrics 15 years ago
I think your spot on with the prostitution angle. I didnt think of that, but once that is put out there it fits the song perfectly. First off "Stranded on the freeway burning with desire, She was on the sidewalk looking for a night light" that along is very descriptive of a man looking for a girl to cure his lust. And I mean the line "Candy apple red dress" is also really telling, red is a naturally sexual color.

Also I just finished a book that involves prositution, Lonesome Dove, and one main theme is how all the cowboys(its a western) envision themselves rescueing her and falling in love with her...ANd this part of the song exemplifies that to a tee

Theres something in the distance
A glorious existance
A simple celebration
A place you've never been before
Tell me that you wanna go

I kinda like how towards the end of the song you can hear "Why wont you kiss me? Why wont you kiss me?" which kind of puts a sad overtone on the whole song despite it sounding upbeat.

The Beatles – Getting Better Lyrics 15 years ago
Someone once told me that John in an interview (I never read it) that the song is actually supposed to be kind of negative, and trying to convince yourself that sings are getting better but in reality they arent; in fact you only think it has to be getting better because it seems like "things cant get much worse" but they also seem to. Maybe a reflection on society trying to pretend bad things arent happening and by not addressing them it keeps getting worse.
