Old Crow Medicine Show – Trials & Troubles Lyrics 15 years ago
I looked up what railroads mean.

Basivally they are a powerful force you can't control.
Perfect for this song. His girl is gone because of some powerful force he couldnt control. Ride that line, the train: Is this a song about coke killing her

Ha prolly not

Yes I love this song to. I like it especially because I dont know what the fuck it means
COUNTRY HYMNAL

I finally know what this is about. The words you are seeing are post-8 minutes of concentrated thought.

Dudes girl was walking on the traintracks and her foot got stuck in the hole. She could be a slave because it says "Begged My brown skin please dont leave me alone" Begged me slave? don't go.

If he was in love with a slave that makes the song very politcal and Civil War themes can come again.

But I don't think so. Pacific was post 1865 post abolition.

Whatever I say, one things for sure Old Crow hates railroads.Do they hate being on the road all the time?

Old Crow Medicine Show – Poor Man Lyrics 15 years ago
Themes: Labor, (Putting a lot of work and faith into something and being disappointed)

Another hymal. I dont know many slave songs, but these are definitely wage slavery songs.
Dude figures theres another world where he will be saved.

Poor Man: Someone who believes in God and works ass off for a living at the same time.

Ya'll should ask yourselves: Is there anything for a Poor Man here in America?
I think what Old Crow feels sorry for people clinging to religion. it's a last hope,

Let me just say this: I think Old Crow is at its best with this hymnal-country material. It is about a desperate hope. A desperate hope that life will improve if not in this life the next one due to humility before God. The songs about what is sin and what is really just human nature make me think.

To me, a capitalist industrial engineering hopeful, I feel like the poor man is an everyman hero. Which is really sad. Many people can identify with the song even if they dont believe in God because the song is about desperate hope in general. The desperate hope that someone loves you when you are not totally sure they are. Or even the desperate hope that loves exists period, not just an evolutionary trait that helps our natural selection. Personally, I feel that you can never really know what someone thinks about you. So get out your desperate hope checklist, a box of wine, and loop this song.

Old Crow Medicine Show – Goodbye Booze Lyrics 15 years ago
Alcoholism.
Guy is fooling himself that he'll quit. (My boozin days will soon be o'er)

Old Crow is realism. They tell it how it is. Not right, not wrong.

Alcoholics know they have a problem, but they remember the good times and are desperate to get back to it.

For another good one Drunk at THE Pulpit by the palace brothers.

Old Crow Medicine Show – Take 'Em Away Lyrics 15 years ago
One of my favorites. Another religious hymnal country hybrid. This is like Blues.
I love the sadness of this song. If god doesn't exist. Then your wasting your time in thinking someone else will take care of your problems. a

If anyone asks you, "You don;t look so good whats wrong?"
Just say
"My heart is broken 'cause my spirit's not free
Lord, take away these chains from me"
And they will never speak to you again because your so deep

Jk. The chains are just responsibilities that are not of his free will.

There's a boss man at the turn in the road
with a rifle in his hand (If he wanted to quit his job theres a boss ready to use force at the "turn in road.
He wants to "make a turn in road" (change his current direction)
But unfortunately dude with rifle is right there. I think some people feel they must to do their jobs just to keep so while the rifle is too much it makes the point that we reallyfeel forced to work rather than liberated to work with passion.

BAsically poor guy has to work his whole life in a beautiful land but can't enjoy it as much because he has no money, no wife, 9 kids and mounting debt. Add to that he's working to exhaustion

I imagine a dude who is like 55 looks 65 (retirement)

Possible themes: retirement, labor, American Dream gone bad (debt, no money, too many kids, wife died, work sucks)

Industrialization taking people's jobs.
Unemployment is an issue in contemporary America. Old Crow uses pre-WW 2 type songs to refer to today.
The boat man losing his job due to the technical advancements is like Americans losing jobs to sweatshop labor or by lower wages/inflation.

Dude and friends lost job to railroad. He becomes a memory.

Theme: Labor

Old Crow Medicine Show – I Hear Them All Lyrics 15 years ago
About how the poor are not heard in government.
Katrina is an example of government being here to help society, yet government feels at most times not to get involved unless they will get the attention they desire.

So while you sit and whistle Dixie with your money and your power. (While you Act like your innocent)
I can hear the flowers a-growin in the rubble of the towers. (Beauty is emerging from the 911 WTC attacks)
I hear leaders quit their lying
I hear babies quit their crying.
I hear soldiers quit their dying, one and all.

He also hears all different faiths coming together to realize the true pacifism and humanity between them. I like how he didnt mention Muslims!

Very hopeful song. This dude hears the bullshit from leaders but also the sorrows from poverty and thinks he hears justice coming. Hope coming.

Like trials and troubles or All my Trials by Nick Drake.
