Damien Rice – 9 Crimes Lyrics 15 years ago
I may be a little late in the game of "giving my opinion" for this song but anyway :) ...... I think the man is married and the woman is a prostitute or nude dancer. The symbolism is so powerful...

INCREDIBLE SONG !!!!!!

"leave me out with the waste this is not what i do"
-- First the woman then the man. Any order would have been fine. This is referring to them both feeling "dirty" and "guilty" (leave me out with the waist) about themselves when he has been happily married as long as he has and she is a prostitute or nude dancer who doesn't mix business with her personal life. Neither have ever been in this position before, hence "this is not what I do".

"it's the wrong kind of place to be thinking of you"
-- Said in the woman voice first. I'm thinking these two met/fall in love in a strip club. With her profession she shouldn't be thinking of him and with him being married he shouldn't be there or thinking of her in that way.

"it's the wrong time for somebody new"
-- Life was going just fine for both of them. No worries, no complaints, no reasons to leave who they were with or to even think about having a "SIDE THING/FLING"... BUT then they start thinking

"It's the wrong place to be cheating on you"
-- If it's not with your lover/mate and it's someone else, somewhere other than... it's the "wrong place" buddy :)

"It's a small crime"
-- Adultery/cheating... No small when you live life on a spiritual level but on a worldly level these days this is considered a small crime. God ain't playing though. Don't play around with His commandments.

"And I got no excuse"
-- I can't blame it on my bad/failed relationship.

"And is that alright"
-- Trying to come to grips with the decision they're about to make in their own mind. Putting themselves at peace with it when that little voice answers their question with a "yeah".

"I give my gun away when it's loaded"
-- Of course if you literally gave your "loaded gun" to someone any thing done with that gun falls on you, you're responsible. The "loaded gun" they are referring to is "their life" with "their loves heart". How many bullets, there's only one. But this one bullet is the heart of the person they love and if this gun ever goes off the gun becomes empty and the owner of the gun can then replace that bullet with a new bullet (person to love). they can't give their guns to anyone loaded because that bullet is there. That heart of another person is in it. SO... They ask each other...

"Is that alright"
-- the little voice says "yeah"

-- They question each other with ...

"If you don't shoot it, how am I supposed to hold it"
-- If you don't fire your gun, emptying out that one bullet (your loves heart) how can my heart (bullet) ever be there. You can't truly love more than one person at time.

-- The reason for the "Gun & Bullet" symbolism is to put it into prospective just how fast you can lose the one you love if you cheat on them. And how delicate that bullet is when your gun can only "truly " hold one bullet at a time.
