I can't believe no one posted on this but then again it seems like a no brainer. Anyway, I think it's about missing someone who's far away. I don't have a significant other but this makes me think of someone I have a crush on who went to my high school and is in college in a faraway state. |

That's how I look at it too. My high school crush recently graduated and he's not from Philadelphia. He's going to college in Minnesota. He wasn't my boyfriend or anything but I wish he wasn't so far away. |

I think this song is about his collapsing marriage to Carly Simon. It means that if he stopped and payed more attention to his wife and kids every once and a while then maybe his marriage could have survived and he wouldn't be on that "lonesome road". The album it's on was even titled "Dad Loves his work" but it wasn't enough to appease his wife. |
