Death Cab for Cutie – Tiny Vessels Lyrics 15 years ago
People seem to give Gibbard little credit. With the level of emotion he puts into his music, I would think more people would have also realized that he's more of an emotional person than one just out for sex. That being said, I think there are many people who may be looking at this without a certain maturation one gets from having many relationships. Many seem to think Gibbard is saying he makes empty promises for sex, and I don't see it as that by any means.

From my experience, there are times where you want to love someone more than you actually love them. I feel that is what the meaning of this song is, rather, coming to the realization of said fact with one person in particular.

I have had relationships in the past where I liked someone, loved to spend time with them, and a relationship status elevated quickly enough that it seemed like love. After some time and intimacy, however, it became apparent that instead of loving that person in particular, I was just wanting to love someone in general.

When you realize that you don't love the person that you thought you loved, it can be pretty rough, and I think that is what he is writing of. His lyrics are indicative of similar experiences, so I can only imagine he was meaning that, rather than something so simple and vain as lying to for sex. Tricking someone into a lay is hardly something to write a song about...especially on an album that's mostly about love and life.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 15 years ago
I view the song to be a love song. He was once powerful alone, but the strength he had was a facade, something he didn't realize until got another view. Someone brought something into his life that he felt to be more important than the power, someone that could be his mirror, his shield, and his sword...the three items all people need. Someone to be honest with him, somone to defend him, and someone that makes him feel stronger than ever.

In the song, he seems to be reflecting upon his life before, almost in disdain, up to the point when he heard his calling to realization.

I don't think he "has" the person this song was written for. The line, "I'll wait in line" seems to signify that he will wait until they are ready, or until it is his turn to be the person they need...but he will always be there waiting for them, loving them no differently. Yet another song that will illicit many meanings from different people.

Coldplay – Trouble Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this is truly a song that will illicit a different meaning from each listener. Some songs have a meaning that is specific, but Coldplay is both vague and precise, illustrating a feeling, but a non-descript feeling that can be applied to many situations, most of which applying in some way or another to "love."

My personal interperetation (based on experiences in my life, obviously) is a person who realizes they have been caught up in a relationship lie that they may not have known to be a lie. ("All the stupid things I've said") For instance, telling someone they were loved, when perhaps the true feeling wasn't love at all, just caring enough for the person that you don't want them to think they are not loved.

I feel this song illustrates coming to the realization that you have spun your own web of lies and gotten caught in it, knowing that the only way not to get eaten (eaten alive by yourself?) is to break the heart of the person you spun the web to protect.

Again, though, this is what my personal experience nets me when listening to the song...there will be many other meanings that are completely correct.
