S: I wrote 'Hey Thanks' for a girl named Jessica who I spent the last two years living with and being in love with. We are no longer together but she has the kindest heart of anyone I know and I'm glad that a song for her made the record. I wrote it in our bedroom, with the ukulele my dad bought me as a birthday present. It wasn't supposed to be a The Wonder Years song but it made it way into one. This song is about the HIV/AIDS virus. It was recorded for what was going to be a benefit EP entitled "Say Anything Vs. AIDS" but was put onto the re-release of "...Is A Real Boy" as the "...Was A Real Boy" second disc. Anyways, this song pretty much seems to describe the fact that HIV/AIDS attacks (and sometimes kills) young teenaged girls who are practicing sexual acts. Here's my interpretation, it's a pretty personal song to me. "You’ve got nowhere to go but up To where you’ll dine with foreign kings You can’t forget about our tryst And all those other fleeting things" I guess it introduces the song very bluntly with the narrarator (Max) being in a relationship issue and the relationship has ended. He is saying she has nowhere to go but up from him and find better guys, but he's not going to let her forget about his times with her. "And will they train you like a dog And will they walk you down my streets The wind will whistle our old songs The ones I’ll always keep" The new guy will tell him whatever he wants and she'll believe him, and do some of the same things he did, and he knows it. "You’ve got nowhere to go Whoa whoa Nowhere to go Whoa whoa Nowhere to go Whoa whoa Nowhere to go Whoa whoa" Basically saying you can't do better than me. "I’ve got a bone to pick with you About the argument we had The day you got into that cab And said my world is in your past" He wants to talk things over about why she left him and got out of his life, but she doesn't seem willing to. "There must be something wrong with me My mind is just a sickly little alibi And why am I surprised You’re giving up on me Goodbye The words you’re wielding like a knife" She gave up on him, and she's holding the fact that she left him over him and it's making him sick and making him feel down on himself. |

Here is my interpretation of one of my favorites of Anthony's acoustic songs. "I know you spent your money to see What you hear on cd This isn’t just a waste of time, addictions made me smarter but u can’t be high all the time" The first line of this song basically says that he is sorry that he doesn't perform exactly what he played on cd's live because of his addictions. It also expresses the fact that he wants to break away from his addictions. "They say what doesn’t kill the soul will make it harder but you can’t be a stone hearted man And do you realize why you apologize, well it’s not your fault, cause were all fucked up. And do you really think that it’s worth it, to be all worried about time" His addictions have made him a bigger and stronger person, but he can't become a jerk because of his recovery and have no emotions. He then says that everyone is a bit messed up and that there is no reason to apologize for being human and making mistakes. If you spend your whole life apologizing for the past and for mistakes, then you will lose track of time and life will pass you by. "Cause I know what you want, its not going to get you anywhere I know you spent your money to see what you love on cd" Like stated earlier, if they want to keep apologizing for their mistakes life will pass them by and the won't get anywhere. It also (like stated earlier) talks about him pulling away from his addictions. "Do you realize why you apologize, well its not your fault, cause were all fucked up And do you really think that it’s worth it, to be all worried about time, worried about time….no But don’t worry don’t Don’t worry don’t cause I know" Like stated earlier, If you spend your whole life apologizing for the past and for mistakes, then you will lose track of time and life will pass you by. He asks the person, "Is it really worth losing a track of your life over worrying? Don't worry". "Cause I know what you want, and its not going to get you anywhere But you need to be, but you need to be free be free be free but you need to be free" Anthony is basically saying that the person he is talking to has worries that aren't going to let them get anywhere, and if they let them be free, they will go places. The worries could be a metaphor for Anthony's own addictions, and how by letting go of them he can be free and not worry about wasting his life away. P.S. Moshtradamus isn't his "new band" in a permanent sense, he and the rest of Circa Survive are very much active. He has stated on many occasions that he did this to release personal songs and that Circa is his main focus. |

At the top of the box where you type your comments, it says, "What does this song mean to you?". I've made an interesting observation...sometimes I just type my interpretations, but i've never really said what a song MEANS to me. This song (and most Glassjaw songs) mean everything in the world to me. This band has gotten me through dark times, tough times and times where the only thing you can do is pop in a GJ cd, scream out the lyrics and relate to what Daryl is saying completely. They know how to write album closers, this, mescaline, and motel of the white locust are some of the strongest and most intense songs I've ever heard. There's times where I listen to this song on my iPod speakers (it isn't on the CD version, frickin' roadrunner) and sing every single word. Whenever something bad happens and i'm alone, my head just kind of starts to play this song to myself, and next thing I know I'm in my room on the floor singing "aaah-ahhh-aaaah-ahh" at the magnificent end of this song. I just love sitting there isolated thinking, with Glassjaw as the soundtrack to whatever it is i'm going through. Whether it be my best friend all of a sudden deciding she wanted me out of her life because I was the only person who was completely real and honest with her and she couldn't handle it, or people taking advantage of my kind nature because I don't want to fight back or cause violence. This song, this whole album, and many of their other songs are so uplifting and inspiring. They just say to you "Man, you're gonna get through this, everything will be OK". Lots of things are thrown at you in life, and lots of them are thrown at you unexpectedly. As long as there are bands like GJ and the ideas of thinking positive, you will be able to get through your situation and move on. |

The working title for this song was "Of Horses and Medicine". Cool little fact that I am just putting out there. This song is basically about parents of kids or people who think giving medicine to their kid who has a problem, or taking medicine to chase away whatever problems they have. In the end, they need to become stronger and conquer their issues without medication. As someone who used to be afflicted with A.D.D., with the help of my parents I was able to overcome it without the use of any medicine. Also, this corners the fact that people will do whatever society or other people tell them to. It basically says that in the end, if we keep doing this, we're going to lead ourselves off a cliff. |

I love this song to death, its where I got my user name from. :) Billy is a great vocalist, and Hot Cross is/was an incredible band. Here is my interpretation "you can't lead the punks to reason, but you can't make them think, and lifelong trouble with the burning fists and angry hearts of america's young is a fear of the new and the narrow outdated tunnels they see the world through." People are trying to make punk-rock kids think differently because they are open-minded and think differently, and adopt the ideals they believe, the ideals they consider to be reasonable. They have a rage and power because they are young and they don't like the world around them, because of the people pushing their bullshit ideas on them and because of the general situations in current society. "and where to turn, but up one's own ass where the answers are free but shit, nonetheless.. we're used to the smell and content with the mess because a slogan's much easier than a second guess." The ideas being forced upon these kids is close-minded crap (made literal by the reference) by people with their heads up their asses. People are so used to being close-minded and dealing with the mess because it's tough to change. "and still we water paper flowers, thinking we've found the way for tomorrow, lest we forget: the empty heads will always be the first to try and kill what's already dead." The paper flowers are symbolizing if you get a paper wet, it will fall apart. The people destroying the world and society are making things fall apart. The song comes to a close, by saying the types of people have to preach and tell others what to believe and who to be are just killing society even more, and what is the point...it's so messed up as it is that it might as well be dead. She was calling me non-stop and it was annoying, trying to get in touch with me and she knew where I was and what I was doing. We were arguing all the time, and that was sort of in my head. That song sort of came out of, you know "Stop calling me so much" and maybe thinking about it from her perspective and being like, "Yeah, I'm kind of a shithead". I don't know where, like, "I watched her taking of her shoes" came from. It's fucking creepy. I don't know where "Dear sleeper, you couldn't find a better bed" came from. I don't even know where that shit came from, it just came out of me when I was singing it. It felt right, so it's as close as you can get. I was in John Feldman's kitchen writing it, and he was just like, "Yo, you gotta write lyrics to this. And we're going to record it, today." So I started to try and write lyrics. Even back then I never thought, "What does this mean for my whole life and this song", I would think like "What feels good to sing". This is one of my favorite Blood Brothers songs. It's not as chaotic as a lot of their songs, but it is still a classic. I can relate to the lyrics in some ways, I've had regrets with someone who mattered to me, and it tears someone apart knowing there is nothing to do to fix things once they have dumped eachother to the curb (in this song the man dumps her to the curb, though). And no matter how hard your friends, family and no matter how many other girls you try, you still have regrets and she still haunts you. She becomes a burden. Here is my interperetation of this song... "Those tire tracks zigzag your torso like a Devil's self portrait. The car accident, the skin graft treatment, the flower baskets, the wincing relatives..." This refers to a disagreement with between a guy and girl. The car accident refers to the disagreement, the skin graft treatment is the hurt he felt afterwords, the flower baskets are references to words his friends told him to use to calm down, and the wincing relatives is his family watching this destroy him. "you bid her farewell then got in your car and that's the last thing that you can recall. and when they pulled you out you didn't know your name exploding semi truck blurred your face with flame..." When everything was said and done, he was shocked by what had happened. The semi-truck (her words) hurt him to the point he couldn't even remember his name and was losing his grip on things. "you met Jane four years ago today dancing at some vomit-stained frat party. Her newspaper gown, glowing headline brown, her violent gypsy dance, her tired underpants..." This basically means that he was attracted to her because of her looks and social status, and she was easy and was very physically affectionate. "Love [x12] rhymes with pity now Love [x12] rhymes with sympathy now" This is basically either how he/or others pity him and people are trying to make him sympathize. "Jane let you touch and feel her she was so free like a pineapple in a tree You said it's dangerous to be so intimate You know it's dangerous, dangerous, dangerous." This basically explains the fact that "Jane" was physically intimate and affectionate and this was affecting their relationship in ways that people who weren't as intimate would carry a relationship. "Jane said when she laid on her back the sun hit her body like an ugly landscape. But some things never get better like used cars and bad livers. So you traded her in for a better looking brand. One with fake porno tits a pad lock on her lips disposable tan biodegradable hands." He realized that Jane wasn't good enough for him and got bored by her affection after a while, and moved on to a girl he thought was better, even though the new girl was fake. "Back at the hospital you got no visitors at all. She visits you in your sleep, but that newspaper gown is always on fire [x2]" The girl who looked like a fake turned out to be a fake and didn't care that he was still hurt by Jane. But when he slept, all he could think of was Jane and how he messed things up with her and how he wants more than anything else in the world to fix things. But the newspaper gown is on fire, and he has no chance of doing so. "She met him a week after you left her when you tossed out her touch to the garbage collector. He talked her out of her skirt in his beer-soaked apartment and then they did all the things you never said that you wanted. And the sirens are laughing underneath your skull. And your thoughts are turning dull, callous and cold. Yesterday you gave your burden a name. Yesterday you gave your burden a face. But your burden looks an awful lot like her." She found someone shortly after he left her. He fooled around with her in his beer-soaked apartment, implying that the man in this story considered Jane's current lover not as good as him and somewhat of a piece of trash. They fooled around because she was physically affectionate and did all sorts of things that the man in this story didn't want because he was not physically affectionate. The sirens represent the realization that he messed up, and it is tearing him apart and making him miserable. The last part is self explanatory. She was his burden, and he realized it. "Love [x12] rhymes with pity now Love [x12] rhymes with sympathy now" He feels sorry for himself and the decisions he made. |

This song was the song that got me into MLIW, and this has to be one of my favorite songs by them. The song is basically about being a young kid in the hardcore/punk scene, with many examples being citing this such as being stuck in a classroom at age 15 and wearing different clothes their parents do not approve of. It also kind of represents MLIW's story, coming out of Marshalltown, IA to conquer and become one of the best and most respected bands in hardcore. |
