Ok i stopped reading the comments... But here is what i give to you, how i feel about it, without knowing this live version or anything. and i think im speaking for the most of the visitors of this site. ;) I think she avoids social contact with men. it could be because shes been through a lot of shitty relationships or could even be abuse in childhood. anyways, she has a problem letting herself go in a relationship, theres a wall arounf her. But shes also despaired. Deep inside her, theres this desire to have someone. someons to give her love, she doesnt know who he is. in this song she breaks out of her daily thinking. shes giving the listener a look into her soul, she takes of thask only in this bridge. At the end of the bridge it gets very amotional, which leads her to go back in to her normal thinking. about the coin operated boys, which stand for her dreams may´be. her distrcacted view on society and relationship, which was destroyed as i mentioned a few lines before by bad expieriences in the past. At the end shes back in her normal condition. |

i think everyone is right and wrong at the same time. In my mind elliott leaves room for you own interpretation. I cant deny one of you "explanations" or "interpretations". I think this is really making this song so special. For me personally this song has nothing to do with alcoholism for example. My gf broke up with her ex bf and we got together. Now im starting to notice that she has never gotten over him completely. So she litarelly is "between the bars". This song is written from my point of view. "People youve been before.... ill keep them still" This is exactly the situation i find myself in. So this is how i relate to this song. People who have problems with alcohol or have friends with similar problems read these lines completely different. I think this is art. Whenever you look at an abstract picture you start interpretating it whether you want it or not. Same happens here.... dito |
