I thought this was about an obsessive compulsive. It is kind of a predecessor to charmless man! A guy who tries too hard to keep up to date on the news so he doesnt show himself up, yet in doing so, acts like a know-it-all. "he's on time yet again" and "so pleased with himself" suggests he gets simple happiness out of punctuality - as long as hes got this, it doesnt matter if his friends find him a bore. |

Yeah, I agree, about a guy who doesnt want his life to change, even when he realises its "banal". That seems to be a common thread through "Modern Life is Rubbish" - most of the songs have characters who seem content, even though they see life as dull. Blue jeans seems the best example of this. By the great escape, all the characters are unhappy. Parklife is kind of a mix of the two themes - taking the good and the bad (most evident i think in "parklife" girls & boys and to the end) |

| I always thought it was about a girl who basically just lied to him all the time about pretty much everything. the only time she says "yes" was whether she "ever loved anyone she [said] she ever loved, which is the one thing she doesnt seemed to have lied about, loving him. why its kinda a bittersweet song. one of my favourites of leisure | |
