i remember hearing tegan explain that she wrote this song whilst living in new york or chicago in the winter or something. i completely forget what she said the meaning was about but i believe this song is written about a deep dark secret that everyone has. i dunno? its just my opinion..

honestly, from staring at these lyrics for hours and pondering on their inner meaning, i have still come to no certain conclusion about the meaning of these lyrics.
much of me though believes that this song is talking about his relationship with his mother. From my interpretation i believe there may have been some family breakup/dispute which has obviously caused much pain. Through this though Justin Vernon has become his mothers "only one", although at the same time feeling the effects of her broken heart- "i am my mother on the wall."
the complex imagery and poetry in these lyrics make this song so beautiful. |

This song is about Daniel Johns battle with anorexia and depression. In interviews he has at times also stated that he battled with sucicde and self image. He described "food as the enemy" and implyed that "the reason he thought he did it was to gain some form of control."
I personally believe it is very brave to be able to reflect so much hurt and pain, and produce it into an amazing song that has changed many people's lives. |
