Not so much idealistic, but fantastic. To dream the impossible so beautifully. But all things must come to pass. I can't go back in time but I still draw inspiration here for the future. I'm sure there are many resources to draw idea*s from, but in my childhood I guess a lot of mine were somewhat limited to lyrics. I'm just glad there was someone out there to say something that could really touch me and make me dream for. |

Picture a motorcycle gang (hells angels) riding down the lane, drunken warriors(loosely) with no battle or cause to fight (but, try telling them that). Ragamuffins banded together loosely, acting tough and bragging about their conquest, or victory over their foes. The line "out-sized unicorn" represent the Harley Davidson. "rough-shod winging" is reference to the method of force by such men. "ice bound majesty" and "cup of silver liquid fire" represents their drunken lifestyle. "fish raw nerve" and "split ceiling swerve" represent the sheer insanity (chaos) of this lifestyle. And what about the women who accompany these men? What if their hero's are slain in battle, what was it for? What is in store for these women? Are they to be done with as these men please? Discarded at will? Most women understand the lack of stability of such a lifestyle, and the resulting futility in its future. Hence you can imagine the class of women these men attract. So these "maidens" "ride" "cry" and ultimately end up "empty handed" on this journey. But I don't think this song is necessarily a message to women, but rather an observation of something one finds disturbing. Comparing them to the Vikings is in reference to the drunken, reckless, lawless, plundering, they both have in common. The Vikings lived along time ago, and one might think we'd have grown a bit by now. On the contrary, and here's the irony, its the undeserving admiration some people have for this mostly criminal, unproductive, non heroic, element of society. "were getting a bit short on hero's lately" This is a generalization only. It is not intended to inflame or put down any person, or persons, and is only a guess at what the author might have meant metaphorically or otherwise. |

Here's an eye opener: change the word (fat) and replace it with (rich). It makes a lot more sense after that. Do people love me for who I am, or my money (especially a woman) Being (fat), he can't ignore these questions. (why is she with me) Reinforcing the problems of being (fat). He(the author)is not interested in being rich, and the added temptations as the result there of. He's not interested in carrying the baggage of what a rich man might carry either. He won't waste time feeling sorry for those who are there now Symbolically the mountain represents the descent down into hell(darkness). Not literally, more like from ones own greed, corruption, self indulgence, etc. Additionally he will get down the(hell) faster, with the added weight of the gold he carries with him. And with the weight of his sins I believe my wife mentioned this idea to me many years ago. (like being a fat cat) When I listened again to it, (and believe me I had heard it many times before this). I walked away with a great new appreciation of this song. I remember thinking, Wow sheer genius. I was very fortunate when I met her. I just can't resist - But I won't worry cause my wallets blah blah blah |

I first heard the aqualung album in 1976. I was 14. I had older brothers which meant this would be my journey into rock n roll with groups like led-who-sabbath-uriah heep and many others. So while many of my peers were listening to disco, or to van halen or areosmith, These were my great discoveries, Already at fourteen i was a real problem child, alcohol specifically. After I heard Aqualung I was instantly a big fan, this guy did something to me, what a connection, its hard to describe, and I'm sure Anderson would be clueless, upon listening to my going on, but what an impact. Although I would party for years with my (friends) I was never really part of anything to speak of, and those years were spent in much pain, loneliness, regret, and feeling sorry for myself(and knowing it). While every one else seemed rather happy partying all the time, I was more often then not miserable and confused. I felt like the Aqualung character, this old man who had missed the boat, and I felt I would, and had lived this wasted life. My father was a big alcoholic too. I already knew what I was in for, at age 14. But I had no intention of quitting at that time, most of my world evolved around alcohol.(I know many people will not understand this).This song in particular takes me back to the ninth grade (although I still listen to it) listening to Baker Street Muse, waiting for the painfullest parts, Crash-barrier Waltzer, after the french term referring to some strange dance, and then. I was an angry young (man) and to me, with much sorrow, and with little resources. I always wanted to be more then what I was, and change what I would become, and of course I wanted to live. And I wanted love, find some beautiful, wonderful girl to love. Cold wind to Valhalla, drinking bikers with there loser women, that's what he's talking about, and making ME wonder who the hero's are, and what it means to be a hero. Stoners and bikers and criminals may listen to him, but I think most of it gos right over their heads. I really believe this, and Anderson reveals his observations many a songs. Bungle in the Jungle-Skating Away-Rainbow Blues-Glory Row-Chequered Flag. But one of the best ways to see his observations, or better put his bafflement with people, Listen between songs of his live album from 1978 talking with(too)the audience. But be careful some of its been omitted on the US Cd. Its on the European 2 disc Cd, if you can find it, and on the original LP released in the US.I guess those folk who buy the tickets to the show, or buy the music, buy the tickets to the show and buy the music. You see it doesn't matter what Anderson intentions were or our,and though he may not understand the impact he's made on others or why. I understand for me the impact over all was positive. I could go into this much deeper but won't. It can't be denied Anderson had an ability to evoke feelings, truly (at least mine).Look at Reasons for waiting, that aint some stoner turned rock star. I think personally he probably feels very deeply, and for me that's mostly what I take away from his stuff. Their was a shift in some of his lyrics after they bashed passion play. his cynicism was ever more exaggerated, I believe it affected him, people turning on you, loving you for this, but man you could be yesterdays news in a heart beat.(its not that I'm afraid of losing fans, I'm just trying to understand it) I think he looked around and was more baffled then ever. I'm sure he worked though it all though, it like stages, I doubt he's very cynical today,(guessing) Its like working though emotions, and dare I say feelings.(not all people seem to have these).What does this song mean to me, I could go on for hours. He's my favorite. And I should add clean and sober 1985. Beautiful wife and children, 16 and 14. |

Another possibility is that stairway to heaven is a riddle much like the riddle in the hobbit. "with a word she can get what she came for" I always wondered what that "word" was? Just going of memory I think there is a line in the song that says "if you listen very hard the /tune/ will come to you at last." I think that means the word is literally said somewhere in the song. another line in the song is "cause you know sometimes words have two meanings" and this word has two meanings one meaning could have to do with /tune or ringing sound/. Probably other clues to but i will skip to "when all are one and one is all" (reminds me of a circle or a wedding vow where two become one) And best clue to me is "to be a rock and not to roll" like a diamond(rock) ring(round or a circle could be another meaning to ring but this ring does not roll). and the lady who shines white light That we ALL know, I think of a bride, who shines white light and wants to show how everything still turns to gold could be the dress or the shine of a golden diamond wedding ring. And don't forget the piper is calling you to join him is quite possibly the husband to be or her suitor. interesting to me that in the hobbit the answer to the riddle was a ring, and somewhere i heard Plant was is an interview and when asked about stairway he replied something to the affect of not wanting to talk about that bloody wedding song. and by the way if you listen very hard to the song the word ring is mentioned in the song (Rings of smoke) additional info:The line "its just a spring clean for the May Queen" *it should be noted that the May Queen was the raising of the phallic Maypole, around which the young single men and women of the village would dance holding on to the ribbons until they became entwined, with their ( hoped for) new love. The May Queen is pagan in origin The May Queen is also known as The Maiden, the goddess of spring, flower bride, queen of the faeries, and the lady of the flowers. The May Queen is a symbol of the stillness of nature around which everything revolves. She embodies purity, strength and the potential for growth, as the plants grow in May. Trash collector suggested I think this comment rings true My interpretation is: A young girl, suitors courting her Proposing marriage, wooing her She chooses him for marriage Together they are one A solid foundation “with a word she can get what she came for” She accepts the ring = they are the ring together The word is Ring I heard this song many times. I always thought it had more of a negative meaning about being on the wrong path, and a positive meaning with time to get on the right one. I think this is accurate but incomplete. I never fully understood the song. I am a Tull fan. (Damn cynic) Change does not come easy. My interpretation is not mine at all but my wife’s She can sit down and figure things out One smart girl, and pretty too. Right now were actually going through some hard stuff. Really no wonder!
