Eurythmics – Jennifer Lyrics 16 years ago
I too love this song, I found this from Annie Lennox's Biography - The disturbing lyrics and references to being underneath the water caused much confusion for fans curious to know the origins of the song. When Annie was first asked by journalist Max Bell who or what ‘Jennifer’ was attributed to, she replied “I did want to write a very poignant love song, one that captured the distillation of feeling for another person. Once I had a boyfriend, and he died. After he was dead I tried to think of all the little things that summed him up. A piece of written paper on the wall, a photo or a shirt with a special smell. I made it simple and it ended up being about myself. It’s called ‘Jennifer’ because the rhythm of that word is so lovely.” Soon after Max Bell’s report in October 1983, Annie made a swift about-turn and began to deny any links to ‘Jennifer’ and an actual death. “Someone asked if ‘Jennifer’ was written about a specific drowning incident,” she said in another interview. “In fact it was written about a drowning, but not a real incident. I saw a black-and-white version of Hamlet when I was eight and there was Ophelia lying beneath the water and the weeds rippling over her and it was very powerful and that was another image in my mind.” Either way, there is no denying that Eurythmics transformed Annie’s simply phrased poem into something really special. “It’s got the sound of the sea on it, and we wanted it to feel so intimate that it sounded like Annie was actually whispering in your ear when it was coming out of the stereo.”
