Rent – Out Tonight Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I love this song because it captures how I see Mimi's character perfectly. When you first hear it, you hear happiness and vibrancy and a free-spirited party girl. But the subtext- both in the lyrics and the harmonies- says otherwise. "Let's find a bar/ so dark we forget who we are"- I saw Mimi as a viciously self-destructive person. A runaway who doesn't want to be reminded of home and a heroin addict. It's my favorite song in Rent. |

In response to sakebox, I've never really thought of Henry being the "good guy"/ love interest... though you're probably right, lol. I saw Henry as more a representation of what she was *against* in this song, the idea of women doing nothing but raising kids and doing shopping for their husbands (thus, the cowboy boots), and Henry as the man trying to get her to accept these ideals. (I think this may be partly because of the music video, which is much more feminist than the song by itself) |
