Interesting take on this song. I always thought it was about a pair of lovers and he is a priest- christian not Catholic so he could be in a relationship- and he has decided to become a missionary abroad somewhere in a really basic poor area with really bad conditions (the line should read the 'roof' not the'root' is ripped with hurracains and the roon is always bare), and he doesn't think she should go with him as it would be a really hard life. But she says 'let us try', She loves him and she wants to be with him so she doesn't care about all those things, she is willing to sacrifice a comfortable life to be with him. The bit about contradicions with the missing line about hyms and valentines to me is her saying he is telling to to listen to him as a priest, so she is saying should she choose his words as a priest or the man she loves. Not suprisingly she says she will choose to be with him as a man rather than take his advice as a religous person.
The last verse I think is suggesting that she does go with him and she is wondering if they will last as a couple or will time, hardships and the people who are against them being together tear them apart, but in the last bit she seems to think their relationship will work. Kindof screw what everyone else thinks we love each others thats enough, lets not let them get us down. |

I don't see how this is Alice being a goody-goody. :S I always saw it as him poking fun at Elvis as in lets all point and laugh what a joke he turned into, rather than a moral story. I mean he did a whole album about himself going to hell so he'd be a bit of a hypocrite if he looked down on Elvis. Vincent Furnier may be a christian, but Alice Cooper is a very bad man- thats the point of him. |

lol this was one of the first Donnas songs I heard and I loved it and I've loved them ever since ^_^ Brilliant song, I think it completly caoptures what they're all about. I really loved it becaseu not only can it be seen as a role reversal of genders, it also shows that can get just as horny as guys and want to take charge nd just tell the guy they want them instead of waiting for a guy to hit on them! |

I guess it's just me being a complete optimist here but I don't see that this song is about giving up on love or despair or any of those things. To me it's about hope, and gaining experience, recognising that you probably won't be happy all the time, but if you wait happiness will come again. Yes at the start she's this hopeless romantic dreamer and Richard is a bit jaded, but Joni points out that he does still believe in love and then he finds it in his figure skater. Maybe it's just me but the way I interpreted that verse was that he found love again, and the material things he bought her wre his way of showing affection, and all the house light on represented hope and happiness as opposed to the dark cafe where he is alone. And the last bit is about hope, she is saying she thinks it is just a phase and that she may be miserable at the moment but one day she will get past it and find someone like Richard did. |

I don't think he's taking heroin, I think it's a drug that mellows him out and gets him stoned 'stoned hotel room' rather than high. I don't think he dies of an overdose, I think he shots himself, because the line is 'Spoon to the lighter to the lighter to the gun' and the bit about 'a pool of sun' is hi lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

I love the second mention of reseda, he makes it sound like the radio man is saying really blatantly to all the people who live in L.A. that they are going there and Since kathrynfk said a lot of porn is made in reseda it's like he's being really straight forward and honest and saying everyone likes porn, if this is what the reseda reference means I think the dying part is meant to be an orgasm, as in dying of pleasure. A friend stold me that the french for orgasm is 'le petit mort' which means the little death.
Also love how clever Doughty is with words, when he says 'we are all in some way or another going to reseda someday to die' reseda- 'recede' as in your life is reseding then you die. Not sure if anyone else sees that one but it amuses me! |

I love this song, the lyrics are really clever. I always read it as the deredation of society and how people have become so jaded to everything hense the title but in the last verse odds are saying that people still pretend that everything is fine and wonderful and hide their insecurities and the nasty things you only discover if you look closer. |

I think it's about being rich and famous and all the ups and downs that it brings.
'some see the rarest bird and hunt it down and shoot it' I think this line is about the public and the press that they see someone really great and really successful and they ust want to bring them down by gossip and rumours etc.
'From survival to excess' when you are successful you start off just trying to keep being successful, but this leads to 'excess' to all the stupid things you read and hear about celebs doing these days. |

i don't know if this has got anything to do with the real meaning of 'little green' but isnt a certain drug sometimes referred to as green? I'm not saying that Joni was under the influence and thats why she got pregnant but but when i listened to it i though it could be symbolism for their youth and inexperience - that it was a mistake. The first Joni Mitchell CD i ever bought was Hits, which was rather unfortunate bevause i then decided to collect all her albums..lol. So apart from the tracks that are on that album I was kinda dissapointed by Court and Spark..until i heard this song! I love it, its brilliant!!! i agree with zubby, and its set in a period of time when most women did not have many options open to them anyway, especially rich women. the were the property of their father until they got married then they became the property of their husbands. A trophy, to be admired and shown off but also to be protected from outside influences. And although she could leave him, what would she do if she did? she'd have no where to go, so she thinks its better to stay where at least she knows he will be loved in some way 'still she stays with a love of some kind' |
