Darren Hayes – A Conversation With God Lyrics 12 years ago
My new thoughts: A person wanting faith to continue on his journey.

The person is going on a journey alone, where it is just him and his faith in God or himself.

The route over the metal bridge, his own yellow brick road, is where he is to go but he resists.

He's falling, not himself, hands flying off the steering wheel because he doesn't feel in control, he doubts he should be on the journey, he doesn't know what he is doing, where he is. It seems as though this journey offers nothing.

He doesn't want to be on this journey, he wants to be with the ones holding him back.
Going on this journey is draining, but it's something he has to do because of his pain.

He wants to have faith to be able to step into the unknown, blindly and boldly, that is turn his light off.
Because there's no way back and no lighthouse to show that he won't dash on rocks and come to ruins.
So it's time to have faith and take the hand of God, ignore the ones that hold him back, no more lingering.

He is falling, and doubting but then he sees the bubbles, that shine and replicate as something marvelous.
He realises that in the hands of the people holding him back, that he had faith in, there is nothing there but sarcasm.

Yes, I like your interpretation. However, I wonder what you would make of the phrase how he wishes he could turn his light off? I'm going to put another interpretation up.

I think I jump to conclusions of death since there is imagery car driving closer to a bridge and falling into water and a light being turned off, perhaps light referring to the life force, I tend towards literal interpretations.

Richard Cullen, Daniel's husband, who made a video of his interpretation of the song shows a car flying off a bridge: http://vimeo.com/4755471 with the car lights dimming in the dark water at the end of the song.

Darren Hayes – Talk Talk Talk Lyrics 12 years ago
I thought of another meaning the other day when I was listening to the song, it doesn't quite fit, but anyway:

It's about someone talking to themselves.
They know how they keep silent out of fear and that keeps them apart from their inner self and away from people.
They think it's better to not listen to want they really want, so they don't pay attention to their feelings.
But all they have to do is just breathe in and out, and be conscious of what their inner self wants.

I like the imagery in the video. I think it's hard to talk talk talk when there is noone who will listen.

Ultra – Say It Once Lyrics 13 years ago
I interpret this song as being about person A, the singer giving person B one last chance to tell them that they love them.
If B doesn't give at least one sign tonight that they like A, then tomorrow, A is going to find someone new.
A has been confused and blind lately because they don't know if B likes them or not.
I don't find A's ultimatum very romantic: "Tell me you love me at least once, or else tomorrow I am gone." I feel A is being demanding and controlling.

Also... there is no such word as 'temptuous' >.<
Well urban dictionary refers it to something that is tempting or it could be a malapropism about tempestuous - something violent, turbulant.
So either way it'll be a fit way to define his emotions.

I like how "Say hello to your lion's heart." may refer to a lion's heart being about bravery, taking a new step or how it always reminds me of the name "Richard the Lionheart" so it's like a reference to Darren's Richard whom he sees as his future.

We Are Smug – Good Dress Lyrics 13 years ago
Epic story:
This is the story of a high-class billionaire and his relationship with his equally powerful, successful wife whom he'd like to consider his trophy wife. They are two alpha people. The billionaire works a lot and doesn't have much time for his wife but he still has to try to please her since she cannot be bought.

"Stand up
Put your good dress on
And walk over here
Sing me a song
Get up
On the starting line
Put your good dress on"

The story starts off with the billionaire wanting to control what his wife does. He wants her put her good clothes on for him and be the model, trophy wife.

"I got time
You know it's tickin' like a hurricane
I got this guilt but no one else to blame
I bought these shoes so you could walk away
But you could not be bought"

He's a very busy man, a big business owner with not much time to spare for his wife. Time is ticking by so fast like a hurricane. He wants to rush back to his work and business meetings. He's guilty for not spending enough time with his wife but it's his choice to work so much. He would like to buy shoes or other expensive things for her to assuage his guilt. But she cannot be bought. She makes her own decisions.

"I got lies
I try to silence all your cravings
I got some time for good behavin'
I really think I left you, baby
Oh the fuck or two"

The lies refer to how he lies to himself about how is in control of things. He likes to think of himself as the one with the upper hand, who can emotionally leave his wife behind. But he is the one who has to satisfy her. He is getting her time because he behaved well. She is an equally busy woman who is calling the shots. He knows that he is lying to himself so that is why he says 'oh the fuck or two'.

"I can feel by the way you talk
I can see it in the way you walk
I can tell I'm gonna pay for it
So put your good dress on

Busy, busy, combing your hair,
With the heat turned on
And you're driving your car too fast
Gonna pay for it
So put your good dress on"

This is his acknowledgement of her as an equally powerful, high class, alpha person. But if he is to bring his 'A' game, he wants her to as well.

I got dimes to pay for sodas and your sweet tooth
To hike your skirt up in your phone booth
To start a fight and say, 'I told you so'
But you can not be bought

He is normally the one calling the shots with enough money to have the advantage, pay for things and have the upper hand in fights but he doesn't have that advantage with her since she cannot be bought

I never really loved you,
You know, I never really needed to.
You like the taste of my behaviour
Mmmm, you walked into the room,
And the future came with you.

Here he is lying to himself again. Not wanting to admit that she has any control over him. He likes to think that it is she who liked him. But then he admits that the future comes with her since she is so modern and stylish and he wants to have his future with her. But still, she should put her good dress on to still try to impress him.

We Are Smug – The Pressure Lyrics 13 years ago
Some other places list the lyrics as:

"I really ployed a tangled web" instead of "I really poured a tangled web"

and

"I am flying over cars and past the northern gay bars" instead of "I am flying over cars and past the moon gates by"

But it doesn't really sound like either.

Darren Hayes – I Just Want You to Love Me Lyrics 13 years ago
I see this song as him wanting to be loved.

He wants to be open about himself/thoughts/feelings. However, he keeps those thoughts a secret, trying to hide them with invisible ink since he doesn't want to be told that they aren't right. He doesn't want to be told what he should do since that makes him angry (since his own feelings would be disregarded) and he doesn't want to hurt or disappoint anyone. He just wants to be accepted and loved.

"And now the world is changing and I can barely keep up,
'cause what was hot is over and what was down is not now"

He has constantly been trying to be what he is not, trying to fit in, trying to be something that will be accepted. Since things keep changing, he has to keep changing himself to keep fitting in.

"Adam and Eve are trying to split up,
and I can't take anymore,"

That is the final straw. Despite hiding himself, trying to fit in because he believed it would bring love, he is still unaccepted and it's not enough to keep even Adam and Eve together. So forget trying to fit in, he just wants to be loved.

This song's message is much like his other song 'Good Enough'.

Darren Hayes – A Conversation With God Lyrics 13 years ago
The singer (call him D) is being led astray by someone he thought was God but is really depression personified.

So D is driving along in life with this person he thinks is God. Yet the drive and his life is going bad - it's raining hard with bad emotion and he's all alone.
He sees he is being led to death or destruction (off the bridge) (this truth was previously hidden and covered in fog) and he argues - this is not what he wants!

His hands fly off the steering wheel. He loses control of the vehicle - and his life - he has done something bad. Or in sudden realisation of what he is doing, his hands do a face palm lol. He doesn't know how he got himself into such a situation. If he could he would go back in time and stop himself then.. but there is no way to go back in time.

"Take the hand of God and bite the feeder." He "bites the hand that feeds him" - ignores the people trying to help him and keeps on with who he thinks is God. Now the voice of depression is screaming at him. D only nods and obeys. He no longer argues since he feels there is no way back. He's in pain and he just wants to die and be in the grave where depression lives. So he dies and then he realises that who he thought was God or good was really depression.

"the voice of God is laced with sarcasm in your hands" It wasn't god's voice after all! It was really a voice put on by the depression!

Savage Garden – Universe Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's about being in a relationship where the other person isn't fully committed.

Boy wants to have a relationship with girl.

But girl doesn't know if she wants to have a relationship with him. The girl has so much going on in her mind and the universe in her heart because she is conflicted about what she wants. If she could only figure out what she wants, she could tell the boy and then be free from being uncertain. She thought she wanted a relationship but she doesn't know for sure.

Boy knows she is conflicted so he's going to let her go and not put his heart into the relationship because she won't commit to him. He's going to look out for himself and at least have sex but not stay the morning since he doesn't want to get involved with someone who doesn't know if they want him or not. He knows she will end up lost in loneliness but you know, that's just what happens when she can't make up her mind to be with him or not.

It's all about the yearning of people to be accepted. To be 'good enough.'

Better than best,
would be simply to be good enough.

Savage Garden – I'll Bet He Was Cool Lyrics 17 years ago
I feel his talking about how we worship all these celebrities who wear all these designer clothes and act like prima donnas even though those things are not what is the most important.

If Jesus were here on earth, he wouldn't be into all those material things. 'He'd like Gaultier but you'd never find him in it' because he would be spending money helping the poor instead of buying something to look good in.
And while Jesus would be so cool and worshiped by everyone and could hang around 'the walk of fame', he 'would turn his back on all of that'. I think he'd spend time helping people.

'Lord, I need your protection spend some time in my direction.' I feel is Darren saying that he wants help to not get trapped into the world of celebrities. He wants to be protected from becoming materialistic and obsessed with being famous and a prima donna.

It sounds like a guy who flatters you and tells you how great you are and how much he cares about you only because he wants to have sex with you. Then, after you do, he doesn't need to pretend he likes you anymore so he'll just say 'au revoir'.

Backstreet Boys – Poster Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
I think a poster girl for something is someone who is the epitome of the thing. Like Oprah Winfrey would be the talk show poster woman since if there was a poster advertising talk shows, she would be on it.
So Julie is a 'right now' poster girl. She's a girl who only lives for the present moment. She doesn't think of the consequences, she doesn't believe in waiting for the tomorrow that may not come, the sun that may not rise. She believes 'nothing's forever'. So she takes what she has and acts right now. She'll shoplift and smoke and party because they feel good right now and she doesn't worry about anything that will happen as a result of that.
But since she believes the future is not important since there is no guarantee, she won't allow herself to get attached to the speaker who has fallen for her. He wants her to slow down and maybe commit to him and he's ready to give her everything. But she won't settle down because she doesn't believe that they have a future since she only lives for the here and now.

Darren Hayes – Darkness Lyrics 17 years ago
"I am famous for my generosity
They say I am the kindest
It is easier to give than receive love, give than receive love"
I see it as someone who thinks that they don't deserve love. So they do all they can for everyone else, but they won't let people be nice to them or they won't treat themselves with love.

"And it's hard to take control
When your enemy's old and afraid of you
You discover that the monster you were running from
Is the monster in you"
This made me think of someone who is young and their parents are abusive and then they get older, but they still can't take control because they don't want to hurt their parents who are now afraid of them since the parents don't have so much power any more. And the speaker finds out that even though they thought they were running from all the bad stuff that their parents put on them, they realise that that is now inside of them and they now treat themselves how their parents once treated them like telling themselves they are a loser since their parents once did. And this abuse went on for so long that they got use to it since their "eyes adjusted To the lack of light[or love]" and now they find it hard to connect to people.
