Neil Young – Cowgirl In The Sand Lyrics 10 years ago
This has always been a very special song to me. Whenever I hear it, I remember my first girlfriend. We were deeply in love but her mother hated me and tried to keep us apart.
My girlfriend was torn between her love for me and her love for her mother and this was a constant source of angst for her. There a line in the song that describes my feelings perfect: After all the sin we've had, I was hopin' that we'd turn bad."
Eventually, her mom won out and I gave up my girlfriend because I could not stand seeing her in such pain.

Leonard Cohen – Sisters of Mercy Lyrics 10 years ago
I've never been able to figure out the meaning of this song. All I know is that it's beautiful and multi-layered, much like a Neil Young song. I've loved this song since I first heard Judy Collins perform it on her 1967 album "Wildflowers." It's the best version I've ever heard.

Jim Carroll Band – City Drops Into The Night Lyrics 10 years ago
I saw Jim Carroll perform this song several times in the 1980s and every time he did, it sent chills down my spine.
As nearly everyone knows, Jim was often addicted to heroin and was on and off several times. But he understood the attraction of heroin all too well and this song was about his addiction.
As he wrote: What you get when you open your door
What you get is just another injection
And there's always gonna be one more
With just a little bit less until the next one
Unfortunately I had the same problem as Jim and the few times that we chatted, he could see it in me as if he could read me like a book. We both knew that death could be just one injection away.

Neil Young – Birds Lyrics 10 years ago
This song has always been very special to me. I interpret it as saying goodbye to someone very special and encouraging them to move on and find someone else.
I would like to have this song played at my funeral for my lover.

Neil Young – On The Way Home Lyrics 15 years ago
One of my favorite Neil songs. It accurately described the relationship between me and someone I loved very much. I had to leave town because I was in trouble and couldn't say when I'd be back.

Neil Young – The Needle And The Damage Done Lyrics 15 years ago
Your interpretation of "milk blood" is absolutely right. When my best friend and I were shooting year ago, he loved to draw out just enough blood from me to create a rose in the syringe, then re-inject it. That guaranteed he hit a vein and did give me a great high before I started to nod on and off.

Neil Young – Don't Be Denied Lyrics 15 years ago
I heard Neil perform this song in March 1973. He had a sore throat that night, but sang at the top of his voice anyway. You could tell that singing the chorus was very painful for him. But it made for a very special, memorable performance.

Neil Young – My Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
This song came out about the time that my lover left me and I felt abandoned and alone. I knew that somehow I had to keep going.
And I love the tack piano that Neil used for this song.

Neil Young – Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song. It reminds me of a close friend who was very unhappy with his life and turned to heroin for relief. He ended up overdosing at age 21. I nearly followed in his footsteps.

Neil Young – Words (Between The Lines Of Age) Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree. The way Neil yells out "words" seems to reflect his feeling that no matter what words people use on his birthday, they are just words that don't lift his sadness.

Neil Young – Cowgirl In The Sand Lyrics 15 years ago
I first heard this song as a teen when I was breaking up with my first true love because she was torn between her obedience to her strict mother and me. I thought that if we had sex, she would pick me. It only made her more emotionally torn and I had to let her go because I couldn't stand to see her so unhappy.

After I pass away, I plan to leave a copy of this song for my oldest friend as a way of thanking him for his friendship over the decades. He'll understand that I've been dying for a long time.

I'd also like this song played at my funeral as a way of telling my lover to move on and find someone else.

Neil Young – Will To Love Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree although my interpretation is slightly different. I think he was referring to someone he really loved although she was never there and thus unattainable.
I also loved the crackling of the fire in the background.

I've always loved the video of this song. The plea for help just chills me.

Neil Young – Look Out for My Love Lyrics 15 years ago
My favorite Neil Young song, particularly the Unplugged version. The way Neil changes the meaning of "Look out" by his inflection and tone just sends chills up my spine. What begins sounding like a warning evolves into a plea for understanding and compassion. It's exactly the way I felt when I met my lover.
