Our Lady Peace – Innocent Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song speaks about VULNERABLE we all are. We judge ourselves too harshly, hide our emotional struggles, give up on dreams too early, suffer in silence with our illnesses and are often subjected to events out of our control. No matter who you are, or how much money you have, or how old you are, or what plans you have for your life - you have been disappointed, frustrated, depressed and scared. As a human being on this Earth, our life experiences often channel us through that path. I think if we truly internalized this fact, we would empathize with the people around us more. How many times do we look around and realize this?

I thought, so too. Or about living with a mental illness or some other disease where your body feels detached from your 'self'.

Tom Petty – Free Fallin' Lyrics 14 years ago
My interpretation of the song is, simply by looking at the chorus, "I'm free - free fallin'" gives you the impression that he left a relationship because he thought he would have no reigns and would thus not be tied to anything ("be free"). But the concept of free falling, is basically motion accelerated by the pull of gravity to earth. So in fact, he has dragged himself to his death (metaphorically). He thought that making such a decision would free him emotionally/spiritually/etc. but he's realizing that that decision hasn't satisfied his overall outlook on his life at all. The fact that he realizes he is a 'bad boy' and has hurt someone is enough to illustrate that internal conflicts exist within him. He doesn't know what path he wants to take, and wishes it would be as simple as drifting away.

Avril Lavigne – I'm With You Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm not religious at all, but for some reason, this song speaks to me in a religious context. As if she's trying to find her spirituality, and connect with humanity, but can't. This is apparent by the video (her cluelessly wandering the streets) and the lyrics, "Why is everything so confusing? Maybe I'm just out of my mind.. Yea yea yea yea yea.... It's a damn cold night, trying to figure out this life."

U2 – I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is a great metaphor for the fact that the things that are worth attaining, are also the hardest to earn. To make any real progress, and to realize the significance of your goal, you have to experience difficulty.

This song defines why I love Travis.

I do see it as a song about a manipulative, distressed and utterly selfish lover. Really catchy too, eh?

Keane – The Lovers Are Losing Lyrics 15 years ago
I can relate to this song on a personal level, which is probably why it touches me deeply.
If you've seen the video, it is apparent that it is about the destruction of the world (by our own hands) and what little value we hold for basic human emotion and life in the midst of our differences.
Currently in an interracial, interreligious relationship - I understand the scrutinies of trying to bind together and form unions that only you, and the person you love, are willing to support. We're so torn apart being black, white, Asian, hispanic, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, etc. that being up in arms and ready to inflict each other is the only thing that brings us comfort. We're all out for each other rather than collectively forming together and making the world a better place for our children.

While Charlie seems to be singing about "lovers that are losing", this song is inevitably about hope and the strength of the human spirit. That in the face of the most difficult adversaries, we are still ready to fight for a cause - the human cause - to get rid of our petty differences, even if the fight is not necessarily won.

Aerosmith – Jaded Lyrics 15 years ago
In this song, Steve Tyler seems to be talking about the music & entertainment industry which has the power to "jade" and cause cynicism within people over time. He's definitely not immune to it, and accepts that, but deplores the fact that his jaded outlook on the world has been subconsciously passed onto the others around him - namely his daughter. In a way, any parent could be singing this to their child. When you're younger, you have an optimism for the world that is quickly scrutinized by those who are elder, more maturer, and who have seen the "cruelties of the world" so to speak. Indirectly, especially as a parent, you can drastically alter a child's outlook on the world. While protecting your children from reality is wrong, so is exploring your own life with so much bitterness and distrust so that your kids learn nothing about things in life that really matter.

Alanis Morissette – Hands Clean Lyrics 15 years ago
Reminds me a lot about the relationship I'm in - I'm currently dating a guy outside of my culture/religion, and while interracial dating is very much frowned upon within my family, we still continue to choose to be together. I'm still trying to strike the courage to let the world know and often at times, wonder how long this will last. Being with him is the most satisfying and happiest thing to happen to me in years, and yet it's juxtaposed with this feeling of discontentment/selfishness and a sense of letting my family down.

Coldplay – Death and All His Friends Lyrics 15 years ago
I listened to this song for the first time today, and it moved me to tears! Previous posters before me are right to point out that this song is ultimately about living in the moment. Naturally, we look to the future because it (seems) to embody hope, but living in the now and living in the present is really the only way to cherish what you have and what you could have from the years to come. In a way, it's subtly hinting that in order to be at peace, sometimes you have to accept things as they are.
It also reminds me of a quote by Henry David Thoreau (you guys may recognize it from the Dead Poets Society movie) "I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life...to put to rout all that was not life; and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

Meredith Brooks – Bitch Lyrics 15 years ago
Underneath, this song is speaking about an independent woman, who knows who she is and what she wants. All too often, "independent" has negative con notations but what does it mean, really? Here's a woman who will nourish and care and love, and yet she's ready to fight and argue and breakdown. It's speaking against this stereotypical notion of what a woman should be like (innocent, full of humility, one who suppresses her anger, etc.) opposed to what a woman really is. It takes a real woman to be strong and independent. It's speaking to all the men who want to love us for our bodies rather than our minds, and who want to embrace a woman who will obey everything they say.

Also, someone mentioned about how this song reminded them of PMS. Haha, it's kind of true and I definitely see it this song! But it's also an embodiment of what being a woman - and not only a woman, but a human being with real feelings and all kinds of aspects to their personality - is really like.

Peter Bjorn and John – Young Folks Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is an embodiment of youth: don't relive the past and fully immerse yourself in the present and look towards the future. I think it's talking about a new relationship that is still on shaky ground, and being skeptical about how committed their partner will turn out to be. In the end however, both of them realize that there's no point in worrying (about the past, and what others may say about their union- which is probably who they refer to as "young" and "old" folks aka people from their present, and people from their past), as long as they're with each other.

Keane – Bend and Break Lyrics 15 years ago
It's about a dragging relationship. He wants to save what ever is left, but is finding it harder and harder to because everything feels so one-sided. i.e. his significant other is so shut off from the world (depression?) that she no longer confides in him or other people. He just wants her to get better, while trying to salvage his own heart.

Keane – This Is the Last Time Lyrics 15 years ago
It reminds me of someone who feels so fruitless and taken advantage of, that he no longer wants to care. He's tried his best to reconstruct this relationship, or what ever he is trying to resolve, but it seems to be going nowhere - and now he just wants to cement the fact that he can no longer wants to be seen as a fallback. He's a person, with real feelings, and who wants to be heard. That's the basic scenario I get from this song - frustration and exhaustion from the same old mundane things.

Matt Nathanson – Come On Get Higher Lyrics 15 years ago
i don't feel that the song has a very obvious inclination towards sex. or at least, he doesn't merely talk about it from a lustful perspective. matt craftfully incorporates how exactly one can feel when in love - not just physically, but the emotional thrill you get out of being so intimate with another human being. i think there are also other interpretations of this song, depending on how you choose to look at it. maybe he's contemplating his emotional connection/chemistry with this woman, but all he really wants is to cut off those strings and embrace her physically without having to question his motives. being with her gives him such a high that he could possibly want nothing more. although the prominent feeling that you get out of such a scenario is lust, i feel it symbolizes something more primitive than that - he wants to be loved, and he wants to feel that connection so badly that he wants her to take him away completely. the "faith" interpretation and "it's all wrong" also makes me wonder if he's cheating on someone else with her. he realizes the moral repurcussions of what he has done, but yet he also feels he can never go back - he obviously desires and loves this woman to bits.

Hole – Miss World Lyrics 15 years ago
this is the story of any young girl's life. we're always taught to keep up appearances by society, and not to show any hint of vulnerability or insecurity. yet, how easy is it to be flawed? i think the depression that is invoked is only present *because* this person is not allowed to embrace their flaws. they're taught to embody perfection (in terms of image, body/physical appearance etc.) and it's literally killing them inside. it's also an expression of inner frustration - usually, if you're popular or embody fame like a "miss world" would, people take you less seriously and will often display feelings of jealousy or outright hatred towards you. it's hard not to think that courtney love is singing about herself in this song. i think it's relatable to her life, and although she isn't the greatest role-model, she's had her share of downright brutal struggles.

this song is definitely catchy! and revolves around two individuals unwilling to take their lives into their own hands. reminds you of a lot of introspective, shy and unrisky people doesn't it.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics 15 years ago
to the posters above me that think that the song can only appeal to a certain subject matter, or mean a certain thing - that could be further from the truth. any song, by an artist, is first written through their introspection but as soon as it reaches an individuals ears, it is moulded by each unique experience and perspective. that's the way any song should be.

my personal interpretation of the song was shaped by when i first heard it. a couple of years ago, on a september night, i opened up to my boyfriend, emotionally, of my depression and withdrawal - and this song was playing in the background. it was ironic and yet it made perfect sense then. when i was talking to him, i was explaining how my depression was growing from a lack of connection to others and consistently feeling alienated, so when he started comforting me and this song came on - it really was like he was saying, "they don't you like i love you" so stay with me and don't stray away and shut yourself from me.

this song may not be a masterpiece, but because of the particular situation when i first heard it, it's incredibly empowering for me.

Phantom Planet – Lonely Day Lyrics 15 years ago
to me, the 'loneliness' that they describe in this song is actually invoked by individuality rather than depression. it reminds me of being in high school again and thinking differently from the crowd, in a place where you're pretty much expected to conform ("we all sing the same old song"). it also reminds me of someone who is a lot different from the image he projects (like a popular jock that's actually a softie on the inside), but since he is forced to include himself into this community and just get along, he can't help but immerse himself in introspective loneliness.

Simon and Garfunkel – I Am A Rock Lyrics 15 years ago
the sarcastic lyrics/upbeat tune in this song actually exemplifies the superiority the protagonist feels - due to being free from those itty-gritty useless pains. it has a very rebellious, adolescent touch to it: the protagonist obviously feels that 'being an island' is the right and only answer to life's problems. yet as others mentioned, he/she realizes that (by the end of the song, "a rock feels no pain and an island never cries") there really is no way to escape those so-called pains. by shutting yourself off you're avoiding the pains that others may thrust upon you, but shutting yourself off isn't exactly making you any happier either.

Coldplay – Strawberry Swing Lyrics 15 years ago
This song reminds me of the feeling that washes over you when you look at someone younger and realize how they truly live IN the moment. As we grow older, we begin the great journey that is life but very few of us truly live. Look at children and their absence of worries and the whatifs of the future. It's times like those that you wish you could run away and go back to that point of innocence and care-free ness. This also reminds me of a love story lost in time - sort of like when you pass by an old bench in which you and your lover once embraced each other, and remember the memories and love you shared. For just that second, nothing could seem more perfect. This is such an earnest desire to find inner peace, I can understand how it can be both uplifting & sad.

The Corrs – Runaway Lyrics 16 years ago
as previous posters pointed out, this echoes pure, passionate and wholesome love. the 'runaway' expression doesn't just have physical conotations, especially when andrea sings "i have runaway with you" - its an emotional commitment of the soul - giving your beloved other everything you own and everything that is you.

Coldplay – I Ran Away Lyrics 16 years ago
this song portrays one person's unwillingness to commit, and yet desires some sort of fruitful contentment from this whole affair. it is essentially a metaphor for 'running away from your problems', or in this case the person that is the embodiment of them. however, it is not you who believes that the person is the root cause but the society that is dictating you to believe it is. a very lose-lose situation, and a classic tale of the independent struggle. are you going to face your choice inspite of adversary in order to live at peace with yourself (and who decides if you really will be at peace), or will you just flake it off because no change can be brought anyway? please one, please many or please just yourself? i feel that is the big picture that the song is trying to get across, although this scenario can be applied to various people, relationships and life situations.

Lifehouse – Broken Lyrics 16 years ago
i think thehourhand's perspective tops the cake. the point of music is that it is interpreted in an individual way according to our own individual experiences; and what it means to the singer should have no direct influence over how the listener feels when they are touched by it. personally, i think this song is true of any personal struggle. especially personal struggles that you do not reveal to anyone, and they consume you (to inevitably become a stronger person in the end). "broken lies seem to free me, let me heal alone" speaks to me about how isolated this person is in what they're feeling, and they're trying their best to hide their true emotions from the world. the "you" that is referred to in the song could be God, it could be the person you love, even perhaps a stranger who is touched by your situation.

New Order – Ceremony Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is breathtaking.
whenever i hear it though, oblivious to most of the lyrics, i feel ian curtis wanted to emphasize the importance of "living in the moment" and to disregard people's fixation with picking out faults and ridiculing others. i undoubtedly also feel curtis's feelings on his affair trickling into this song too - as others have pointed out. it’s a great metaphor for forbidden relationships and how the love between two people can be so easily obscured because of how society views them.

Belle & Sebastian – I'm a Cuckoo Lyrics 16 years ago
belle & sebastian are lyrical geniuses!
aside from the meaning of the song, the way it's delivered even conveys the distraught and dismayed mindset of the young fellow experiencing all these emotions. albeit it is a happy tune (in tune to an ironic subject matter) - but maybe the sense of giddiness is natural for one who is still constantly thinking about someone they haven't quite gotten over yet. references to the wilderness, a fever, "being cuckoo" are all great metaphors for being madly in love to the point of obsession.

The Clientele – (I Can't Seem To) Make You Mine Lyrics 16 years ago
definitely one of the most heart-rendering songs i've ever heard. alasdair's vocals suit this song perfectly. i can vividly picture a nostalgic winter night with the love of your life (although she doesn't know it) that goes awry. the protagonist views himself as a "beast" (one that is constantly pondering love, love, love) which builds up an interesting parallel to the beauty & the beast like tale that we all fondly remember - except in this one, the two were never meant to be. it's about wanting someone with the very depth of your soul, although they could never possibly love you in the same way. it could also be about loving someone who changes so radically, and so quickly, while being involved with things and events so beyond your control that that you can never get them back. amazing song - transports me to a completely different time.

The Clientele – Since K Got Over Me Lyrics 16 years ago
reminds me of "there she goes" by the la's. not necessarily because the songs sound similar, but because the lyrics can be interpreted as a notation towards both a girl, and recreational drug use. i can see how it can be a story about a relationship being ruined directly due to an addiction, as well as a story about the listless emptiness one experiences after a painful breakup.

The Clientele – Bookshop Casanova Lyrics 16 years ago
a great song about metropolitan life and the entertwined loneliness (vision a scenario from lost in translation). the great desire to fall hopelessly in love with a perfect stranger - someone you've just met that you wish would sweep off your feet. you envision them to be the complete opposite of the life you are leading now, reminiscent of a saviour and a reminder of happier times. yet it is an ironic desire, realizing that the reason that will inevitably bring you together is the mutual emptiness you both share.

Travis – Why Does It Always Rain On Me? Lyrics 16 years ago
i too heard this song for the first time when i was 17. it described my life perfectly back then. there comes a point in your life, especially before a milestone, when you become convinced that there really isn't any light at the end of the tunnel. things are different now, and i've come to accept that our minds just make us believe that we are unlucky or lucky when the outcome of life really just depends on circumstance. just your perspective on some of the events that life throws at us can make the biggest difference.

Oasis – Some Might Say Lyrics 16 years ago
reminds me of people who pretend life should be lived in a robotic, well-defined and constructed set of rules. without realizing that well, life is anything but predictable. you could believe you're heading down a certain path and wound up on the wrong road no quicker than with a blink of an eye. it also echoes the fact that because life is so unpredictable, being judgemental of how someone is leading their life is probably the most ridiculous thing one can do.

this song is about being in love with the image of someone. and not entirely, or necessarily, them as a person. it's a hard subject to decipher :P it's talking about infatuation and the desire to be included within the subject of your infatuation, yet being confused whether you really "fit in" together in the long run.

Coldplay – See You Soon Lyrics 16 years ago
if there is one song that could be used to describe me, this would be it. it has such an achingly beautiful quality to it, and the lyrics chris sings are so honest and vulnerable. it speaks to me personally because i feel like the protagonist chris is singing about. back when my depression was the strongest, i wasn't willing to connect emotionally with other people, simply because over the years i had become convinced that most of them are out there only to hurt me. i've learnt that happiness tends to go hand in hand with the raw realities of life, and that most of those realities are only present to clash with how you'd like the world to be. most nights i would cry myself to sleep knowing that there was no one out there, even my closest friends, that knew exactly what was going on in my head. on the outside i was joyous and optimistic, but on the inside i was everything but. to me, this song does speak to people who go through this phase of paranoia and despair.

P.O.D. – Alive Lyrics 16 years ago
this song speaks to me about consciousness of faith, or the realization that faith is really all around us. i know most people think of faith as the literal, religious interpretation... but faith tends to branch out from one holy entity to a steadfast belief in the here and now. it may sound preachy but this is the way i view faith, at least, and how it is portrayed in this song. faith gets us through a lot of things (faith in the fact that the hard times will soon be over, faith in someone we love, etc.) and i believe that without any "form" of faith, we wouldn't really be alive. as human beings we need the entertwining of hope and trust in order to live every single day without backing down.

Counting Crows – A Murder Of One Lyrics 16 years ago
frontman adam durtiz said that the song's meaning alludes to the disappointments in life: when you're younger, the world is full of infinite possibilities until you reach a certain age and realize that life isn't necessarily carved in your favour. the song revolves around the concept of relationships, and the never ending cycle of relationships that get you nowhere. you fall in love believing there is something larger than life in store, only to be let down time and time again. but to me, the song is also a metaphor for a lot of things that happen in life that we keep on falling into (that are mundane, disappointing, etc.), despite knowing that there is a lot more to life than what we are used to. we're just afraid to crawl out of our shell and extend beyond the comfort zone. perhaps out of fear of being content? "all your life is such a shame, shame, shame. all your love is just a dream, dream, dream" are two lines in the song that describe me perfectly. before i started a relationship two months ago, i would constantly restrict myself from ever liking anyone and refused to believe that i should ever touch or love anyone before i was married, and thus "ethically allowed to". it's such a twisted way of looking at love, but culturally, that's just how it was for me growing up. i just couldn't change and it was suffocating me inside: being in the depths of loneliness, craving affection and getting none. i was ashamed of who i was, ashamed that i would disappoint everyone around me, and of course ashamed of loving anyone so truly and completely. but then you learn, the only way to progress is to bring about change. it's really the only way we have been able to survive.

Mika – Billy Brown Lyrics 16 years ago
i also agree with victorporto. other than the obvious story of a bisexual man, it hovers around the metaphor of doubt and dismay. even the most perfect have skeletons in their closet that they manage to hide away from the world. it's hard to escape these fallacies of life. even though you would think that today's world is a lot more tolerant and accepting than the kind of views they shared in the olden days, social conventions really haven't progressed very far. we're still as embedded into our backward thoughts as ever, and no matter what science proves about life, we will never really have a "real" answer to it all.

Radiohead – High and Dry Lyrics 16 years ago
this song always makes me cry a little because it personally speaks to me about a relationship i'm in right now. i like the boy immensely, but a lot of things (namely culture, people's opinions etc.) get in the way of letting us express our affection completely and wholeheartedly. i'm constantly conflicted with how to deal with my feelings for him, over the feelings i may invoke in others by being in a relationship with him. a lot of the times, i want to choose the latter rather than the obvious former. the kind of emotions that probably run through my boyfriends mind are feelings of being left high and dry all the time. i constantly want to make everyone happy; including him, but not pertaining to just him. sometimes his feelings have to be compromised for everyone elses. i hate how i have to make a choice like that... and thom yorke's painfully soothing singing in this song pretty much sums up my feelings (of wanting to please everyone but myself, ultimately) and the feelings that run through his mind.

Travis – She's So Strange Lyrics 16 years ago
the "she" fran healy is singing about seems to describe me. just like the person being referred to in the song "driftwood", "she" is heading to a path of self-destruction while being blissfully aware of her fate - making her fate even more so ironic. i think her fate can be interpreted in many ways: she left her previous happier (if not completely fulfilling) life for something demeaning and useless, pushed aside the person who loved her and moved away because she only thought of herself, etc. it may also be a general notation towards how hard to read and unpredictable women can be (or at least women he's known and had a relationship with).

Mika – Lollipop Lyrics 16 years ago
i agree with cuteforapigmy. in the song mika even says "too much candy gonna rot your soul". when you think of lollipops you think of childlike innocence, yet you also think of sugary desires. it's very ironic in its own representation... and is thus a great metaphor for young kids gone bad (instead of leaning towards the former con notation of lollipops, they give into their desires of love and sex far too early)

Simon and Garfunkel – April Come She Will Lyrics 16 years ago
this song is a metaphor for young love as a short, passionate and flighty affair. the description of the man's object of affection is likened to a bird, which i thought was interesting (her movements / changes from season to season remind me of migration patterns birds have). if you've ever seen the 2004 movie "closer", natalie portman's character in the film is very similar to the kind of character portrayed in this song. like a bird, she cannot stay in one place for long and constantly wants to explore new places, new people. deep down inside, it's really her inability and fear of loving someone so truly and completely that makes her unable to commit. she can't let anyone get close, and thus her lover is left with a broken heart before a year has even gone by.

"creep" reminds me of a guy i knew in high school. he would always chase these girls, so much so that he was almost consumed by them (raise them to a level of godliness, devote all of his time to useless wishful thinking or pleasing them). yet at the same time, he had such serious esteem issues that i often felt he needed someone perfect, or so blissfully self-aware in his life to make up for all the qualities that he lacked.

i echo similar ideas: it's about loving someone far more than they actually deserve (either because they never really "loved" you in the first place, or because they were pretending to be someone they weren't). when you realize the truth about this person that you once strongly felt for, you feel vulnerable and torn apart.

Garbage – Stupid Girl Lyrics 16 years ago
this song really could be about any girl. but i think it relates best to girls that spent their entire life trying to please everyone but themselves. i'll quote a hole song on this, when courtney love sings "i fake it so real i'm beyond fake" in 'doll parts'. they become so obsessed about being the centre of attention ("what drives you on can drive you mad") and being popular, that emotions blend into each other & just become a bunch of words to them (especially the emotions of others). "stupid girl" really speaks about destructive ambition. and in this case, useless pathetic ambition that serves no purpose.

Cherry Ghost – People Help The People Lyrics 16 years ago
how i love this song. ever so often you come upon a song that truly SPEAKS through its lyrics. "people help the people" is one of them. i think it appeals to the lonely, lost soul in us all... we pretend we're so much better than the people surrounding us when deep down inside we're just a collective of the same emotions, lives and silent thoughts... just residing in separate bodies. even though the thought sounds terribly depressing - i think the song also speaks about how every person you meet is shadowing a haunting secret, life experience etc. behind their smile and everyday routines. although some of us have had far fortunate lives than others, even the most well-off have had trying times. we're all waiting to be saved. if only it was as simple as holding a hand and showing sympathy towards your fellow being... the world would be a much happier place. for a split second, we could pretend we weren't so excluded and alienated from the very beings that live the same lives, breath the same air and cry the same tears.
