@[jadedgypsy:22764] Love the same passage of the song - it speaks to my experiences with being sad/frustrated/depressed.

@[steve10335:622] - it's true. God/Jesus, same essential thing (John 10:30). One of the things that it speaks to is the idea of going out on a limb to live life, to take risks - and that by doing so, we actually have the opportunity to increase not only the love we receive, but our own capacity to give love. I'm glad you commented on this song, because it's been a while since I've thought of it and it's really so beautiful. :)

Since this is art, and damn good art at that, this can be about any relationship you care to imagine.

For example, imagine this is a love song sung by God to the entirety of humanity. I don't care if you are a Christian, atheist, Buddhist, etc. just do it as a thought exercise. Start reading the lyrics and imagine God does exist, and he's just like anyone else in a relationship with another entity that has free will, etc.

It's beautiful. :)

@tpmc12 - you would do well to check your information before posting your ignorance about the history of yellow ribbons in this country - the gulf war of the early 90s is exactly what this song is referring to, go look it up.

Even fans of RATM are subject to ignorance. :)

Probably one of my favorite songs of all time, and I'm not just saying that - despite being a die-hard classic rock zealot, this song is just too fun and sexy to ignore! :)

Love, love, love this song! It's got such great energy and a pretty awesome message, too (in abstract, specifically). Marianne's voice on this track has such an amazing sound of purity and innocence to it. :)

Rage Against the Machine – Bullet In The Head Lyrics 12 years ago
Here is the exact excerpt from 1984, second-to-last paragraph:

"The voice from the telescreen was still pouring forth its tale of prisoners and booty and slaughter, but the shouting outside had died down a little. The waiters were turning back to their work. One of them approached with the gin bottle. Winston, sitting in a blissful dream, paid no attention as his glass was filled up. He was not running or cheering any longer. He was back in the Ministry of Love, with everything forgiven, his soul white as snow. He was in the public dock, confessing everything, implicating everybody. He was walking down the white-tiled corridor, with the feeling of walking in sunlight, and an armed guard at his back. The longhoped-for bullet was entering his brain."

It's a powerful book and very prophetic, sadly.

That is awesome, I'm _so_ going to start saying that to people... Not to the point of being annoying, of course. I have other, more exciting means to accomplish that end!

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 13 years ago
"'load upon guns and bring your friends' it sounds to me like hes talking about mass shootings in schools like the columbine incident."

Except that Columbine was in 1999. Up until then, I don't really remember "mass shootings" at high schools making the news like they have been since Columbine. Did they happen? Oh yeah, here's a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_shooting

So, it's definitely possible that the reference in the song is to actual guns, but it could also be a reference to figurative guns - i.e. the words and actions that school kids hurt each other with, etc.

Bob Marley and the Wailers – Redemption Song Lyrics 13 years ago
@gnomeklpto - great comments, I appreciate your articulation of things, which happen to reflect, largely, my exact feelings on both Marley's words as well as my personal view of the status quo in our "Western" culture. Unfortunately, the proletariat majority are so far gone that I am not sure redemption is possible.

Via one of the most insidious tactics used to truly brainwash people, people are led to feel that they have freed their minds, when in reality, they have simply purchased a pre-packaged and slickly-marketed set of beliefs that members of this group believe to constitute "free thought," sometimes merely because a given belief challenges the current "establishment," whatever they may perceive that to be; a salient example of this would be the monikers of "Republican" and "Democrat" - both of those are just such packages of beliefs. I am surprised people don't realize that it's highly improbable that either of the extremes put forth by those groups could be "right" or "correct."

While it is true that some "established" ideals/practices/theories may need to be revised or thrown out, applied thinking/analysis should be done before doing so, lest the proverbial baby ends up thrown out with the bathwater. In my 37 years, I've observed that extremes in anything are usually poor positions to take - the seemingly sane/rational/logical "answer" is usually to be found somewhere in the middle (equilibrium).

The sad fact is, people simply don't _want_ to think - it is too hard and, besides, there is something good to watch on TV right now, so I will "think" about things later! As long as people are amused/entertained/fed or otherwise distracted, they really don't care to think. To quote Kurt Cobain, singing about this fact, "Here we are now, entertain us."

Now, there _are_ those, when blessed with time/money/opportunity for leisure, spend time thinking about how to solve or mitigate the "hard" problems (hunger, poverty, disease, etc.) of this world, but they seem to be few.

-----

Regarding your comments on the Book of Revelations, I completely agree that this is what Marley was referring to. And religious people I know do have the tendency to say, regarding the seemingly-downward spiral of society, "well, it's inevitable - it's been prophesied to happen, there's nothing we can do about it." Even if it proves to be true that we are in the "last days" predicted by that Biblical book, we are _not_ justified in throwing our hands up in assumed defeat - we are to fight valiantly so that we can maintain honor. God would not have us hasten the demise of society, he'd have us fight a good fight.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents, for what that's worth. :)

Hall and Oates – Adult Education Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow, 3.5 years since the last (and only) comment on this song. This song is strangely addictive and I remember listening to it when I was about 10 years old (the year it came out). I wouldn't have understood it then, but now I do, especially seeing as how I am now almost the same age Hall & Oates were when they recorded this. :P

Here is what he may be referring to (maybe he knows people with Macs that are using this):

Remnants of this song's lyrics show up in "Spare-Ohs" on his "Armchair Apocrypha" album.

This song was made before "The Swimming Hour" came out and cannot be purchased. You must go look for it. If you seek it, you shall find it.

Okay, that was way rude of me to start off in the way I did above - forgive me. All I am saying is, don't get too hung up on the idea that Bird is trying to communicate things that are so deep as to escape most people. He's just a guy like the rest of us. Dylan hated when people attached too much to what he sang, and I bet Bird is the same way.

Those that think this is about masturbation are probably doing that themselves a bit much.

His performance of this on the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour a few years ago was great (you can find it online) and when he sings the Carly Simon reference, people in the audience get it and you can hear them laughing.

Andrew Bird – Fake Palindromes Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, actually it *isn't* "geez, don't you know that you could've died, should've died" - it has been corrected. The fact of the matter is, Bird is using it more as a swear word here than anything. Jesus *did* die, so why would he sing that He "could've died, should've died?" I think I am safe to say this song isn't anything about Jesus.

The song is about Trepanation and he mixed it with lyrics from another song of his. You should go find a live version of Trepanation.

Andrew Bird – Banking on a Myth Lyrics 17 years ago
To me this song reeks of reference to the music industry and how they have made music a mere commodity to be bought and sold; with the right marketing, they can make artists that 'blow' (read: suck) sell albums because apparently consumers don't really care for really really good stuff (hence the lukewarm diet reference, being at neither end of the extreme (i.e. not being good or bad, just mediocre)).

I think of American Idol whenever I hear this song; that show is one of the most amazing things I think, because it shows just how poor our culture's view of art truly is - it is something that can be created rather than allowed to grow on its own. That show is like an assembly line for mass-produced, passionless music.

Andrew Bird – Darkmatter Lyrics 17 years ago
Sweetbreads (an earlier song that gave this one a lot of its lyrics) was not just about eating animals - specifically it was about eating the vital organs of animals. "Sweetbreads" is the term, more especially in Europe, that denotes things like livers, brains, tongues, etc. and it was a song that Bird came up with while touring over there because he would find out that sweetbreads meant different animal parts in different places. So, it was a song about that originally, and it had some interesting rhetorical questions in it that have found home in this more well-rounded song.

Sweetbreads is still an awesome song though in its own right, and I suggest you get it if you haven't heard it.

Andrew Bird – MX Missiles Lyrics 17 years ago
I love how a lot of people think that the "MX Missle" part of this song is in reference to specific drugs. I don't think Bird is into drugs or hanging with people that do them. Bird graduated from high school long ago (back when many of his new fans were probably still in diapers) and people back then were not hanging out doing mushrooms and ecstasy together in combination. Druggies tend to think everything in the world is about drugs; that is a side effect of being a user. :P I know all about it from experience; I was an addict for years and have been sober for over 11 years now and it amazes me how drugs make you see everything in screwed-up ways.

Anyway, this song is simply about someone falling off of a pedestal that they were put on and the observer realizing the person is human after all. theo444 has a very accurate idea of what Bird has said about this song in the past. This song is pretty old, a staple of live shows long before TMPOE came out.

Andrew Bird – Simple X Lyrics 17 years ago
I love new Andrew Bird fans that think his songs are fraught with deep meanings....it is obvious you have not heard him talk about his own songs and how they are made; He really is more into how lyrics sound than what they mean - not that they don't have *some* meaning, they are words after all, but don't try reading something into them that is not there, at least don't do it and say he meant it. Art is meant to be interpreted on a personal level, but for Bird a lot of lyrics are just nice sounds.
