I thought the Sassafras part to mean the person was deceiving the narrator. The "Sisyphus" makes a big deal out of his climbing up the mountainside, or dealing with trouble, but the narrator finds a scrap of Sassafras and realizes he's had a way of coping with it all along.

Corsets were often made from whalebones. Just another whale connection. I'm still not really sure what the song is about for me.

About the third and first person switching in some versions, I always thought it implied a love triangle, with the narrator and the "he" loving the same woman, and hence they loved the very same one.

Anyway, I tend to think of this song as being about two people who are either immortal and who keep running into each other or people who are reincarnated and keep falling in love, since so much time passes. Also, that "poet from the thirteenth century" could be the narrator, either from a past life or from a long time ago. Just a thought.

I just wanted to comment about the violence present in this song. Obviously the begining references to war play a big part, and the gun part. Also, the song has frequent alliterations of hard b or d sounds (like "dark dream darlin'" or the "bread broke, fell in bricks of wet smoke") which reflect the violence in this song. There's also the pun of "violence" for "violins" in the line "makes the sound of violins"
Just some thoughts...
