LOLs. I agree that this song is kind of an oddball on the album. Now, as for its meaning, I think that the lyrics are too short to have any definite meaning. They are up for self interpretations really. The school I go to is very academically driven and getting a lower than B grade is considered "bad" for most ppl. So its a lot of pressure, from teachers, parents, society, etc. And sometimes, I feel that the ppl in our town are so focused on scores, numbers, and statics that ppl lose meaning in whats really important in life. This is where this song comes into play. The first line "you may notice certain things before you die" sort of explains the whole school thing I was just talking about...and "mail them to me should they cause your algebra to fail". Meaning that, if and when someone realizes that life isn't always about ambition, achievment, competition, etc., it can cause ppl to lose faith in stuff like that...therefore, "fail their algebra". The second stanza seems to then refer to ppl who don't realize these things in life, they don't see the bigger picture. They are too caught up with test scores, winning, etc. or rather, "the smaller points", and fail to enjoy life because of it. "roll them up in coffee cake and dine" is the one that confuses me the most. But, er, taking a wild stab @ it....I think it might mean that you shouldn't listen to the ppl described in the 3rd line. Coffee cake is fun and delicious, the ppl being eaten have no fun at all. By rolling them up and eating them, you are the one who "wins" over them in the end. Wins at what? life, of course :D They "die" because of their narrow beliefs. >< or something like that.... About the weird ending w/ the kids laughing/crunching/water running: hm, It sounds like the kids are being eaten up. Maybe it means that childhood is slowly eaten away by all the burdens and pressures of the world. ^_^ just my take on things... |

I'm not trying to turn this into some forum or something...but I really have to get my opinion out there. First off: I've listened to a couple of the Used songs from their first album and thought they were pretty good. When this single came out on itunes, I was pretty excited...but when I actually gave it a listen, I found it to be quite horrible. The lyrics are very shallow and cliche in my opinion, no...scratch that, EVERYTHING sounded cliche, emo, and mainstream. I mean, what happened to Bert's AMAZING song writing skills?? Also, I know a few of the Used fans like Patd.....and some others are like, "Patd is the worst band on earth, don't compare that shit band to the Used". I find it to be extremely amusing that some the Used fans are so snobby: Okay, listen, the Used is in no way superior to patd. You want to know what's superior? Bright eyes, radiohead, neutral milk hotel, the who, the shins...got it? So please don't go off thinking that your such an "elite music listener" because you listen to the Used. (btw, I'm not a snobby elite music listener either, I just get annoyed @ ppl who are like that.) Anyways, sorry bout the ranting....>< hehe, you can all go on with your lives now.... |

This is my absolute favorite song-- most definitely. Because I really agree and thought of the same things before. It's funny, Hollywood makes it seem like if u grow up and become more mature, it means you're sleeping with ppl and doing drugs.....therefore, the corruption of today's society as we are revealed to these things. There are lots of subliminal messages in movies. SCARY THOUGHT: many movie makers now try to put as many of these dirty things into their movies just to get it an R rating. why an R rating? cuz it has a much higher selling rate than PG-13 movies. Proving the point that society finds these unordinary , previously "once in a life time" experinces (or maybe never) to be nice, so they raise up the bar to: for sex-anytime, anywhere, with any random person you just met a few minutes ago. for violence- (geez, have u ever seen one of those little Yu-gi-oh kids with their heads all messed up and pretend fighting ALL the time) srry, prob in Asain populations only ^_^ Little kids fighting with their toy robots, teens kidding about exploding heads and bodys, ppl stabbing, shooting each other. Violence really messes up your brain. Drugs- HOLLYWOOD TOTALLY GLAMS DRUGS: they glamed herione, made all these drugs popular, but not showing the true symptoms of them and what them could really do to your body and mind. When you've seen all these private or gruesome images, there's really no turning back...so yeah, this song is about all these messed up things ppl do and how society starts to accept these crazy things. The corruption of today's society. Oh, btw, death is not like it seems on TV, are bio teacher says that when ppl die, all their intesines relax, so there could be a puddle of piss or poop next to a dead body.....(just a thought) |

DelilahDoll: if I am not mistaken u just said that Dresden dolls hated Panic! at the disco which is entirely untrue. In fact the video they made P!atd vs. Dresden D. was just for fun, to blow steam, and was to show fans how they DIDN"T hate each other (or why would the collaborate in a video together?) It was the fans that hated each other and the 2 bands wanted to prove them wrong and show the irony of the video. You could even read in the SPIN magizine....they were sharing inside jokes and teasing within only 2 months of being on tour together..so I wouldn't call that HATE LOL. BTW, there is nothing wrong with panic!, sure they definitely are overrated and popular among MTV kids cause of the stupid radiostations playing their music (which they did NOT want)...but they are in fact talented and there is no way around it. But anyways, back to the main point of being here, I think the lyrics mean....they become more famous and someone had helped them get there, and that someone was excited to help, even though he usually takes things like these lightly.... could "thank you for all your help" be sarcastic? Maybe they don't want to be famous (therefore the person helping them being a backstabber) then this line:"but now you’re gonna have to shut your mouth and fight me" meaning stop "helping" us...and the rest is obvious "you’re all alone you’re all over the popular magazines will never care what do you care you’re down with the japanese but you’ve got no right to sit there saying I abuse it when you only sleep with girls who say they like your music" The person's over, their career is over...therefore the pop. mags won't care about him. "I abuse it" the IT being fame....which relates to the next line saying that he uses his fame to sleep w/ girls...so he's got no right to say they abuse their fame. "failure has made you so cruel" Relating back to the part saying his career is all over...the failure making him cruel( and a backstabber) |

He could be referring to his own career to become this band as the "starlight" he was chasing.
