Why? – By Torpedo or Crohn's Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Read in a recent interview with Yoni that he suffers from Crohn's Disease. Thus explaining the line "I’ll go unknown by torpedo or Crohn’s” |

Snow Patrol – Gleaming Auction Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Coroar mentioned the stubborness of the ex in this song, but I think it's actually the narrator who's the stubborn one. He know being stubborn will end the relationship, so he's doing it on purpose because he wants to end it, because he's tired of the petty squabbles. Especially the last lines in the song; he's the one covered in blood and fear and spite, not her, but his "feeling stay the same". Just thought I'd offer my thoughts on these lines (I added in brackets the unsaid parts that I think are implied, which make sense to me...) Just because you were right before Doesn't mean [I'm going to admit] you're right [this time] To make up now [i.e. drop the issue, admit you're right] would just vindicate Every doubt I had [I'm tired of this, so I'm deciding to be stubborn on this. I don't care if I'm wrong and/or if this causes the relationship to fall apart, I'm just tired of it all] |
Why? – Berkeley by Hearseback Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Haven't seen someone here mention it yet, so here goes: When he says "I am survived", that to me sounds a lot like obituaries where it says something to the effect of "Mr. So-and-so is survived by his wife and son, etc". Meaning, that if this song is about death, then he's not worried about it because he is "survived", in the sense that the people close to him continue living on. |
Dessa – The Chaconne Lyrics | 13 years ago |
First off, in case anyone’s wondering: A Chaconne is a particular type of musical arrangement. Check Wikipedia. There’s also a particular famous one called “The Chaconne” by Bach, which I guess is the definitive one. I’m pretty sure it’s what the song is referencing. Also, later in the song when Dessa mentions “brie”, that’s a type of French cheese. That makes sense because “Chaconne” is actually the French spelling of “Ciaccona”. I think the song is about a family member, possibly her grandfather or someone similar. A relative that she mostly knew by reputation, but wasn’t close with. Maybe a great-uncle? But there’s a line about how she resembles his wife, which would imply that they’re relatives. She’s also much younger. Anyway, he was sickly as a child (as evidenced by the lines about nosebleeds and the nursemaid), and practiced with the violin and his "chaconne", since he was unable to do anything else. He went to the "academy" (some sort of music school?) and became famous due to his skill on the violin. This was around the time that the narrator was born and was first getting to know this person (the line "first a darling, then a marvel, when we met I was still a young girl”). I think the song’s expressing angry and pity at this person. For example, the line about how he was “vain and hard to take”. Also, I’m pretty sure the line “your love sleeps in a velvet case” is meant sardonically; his “love” isn’t a person but his violin. The verse about his wife shows that he didn’t really love her; I think the line about keeping her alive on brie is a metaphor — he neglected her and only paid her enough attention as was minimally required, since he’d rather by working on his chaconne. This seems to be supported by the line about how she won’t trust him “with the baby”, because he wouldn’t pay attention to it. He just sits in his room, focusing on his chaconne, his obsession. |
Sage Francis – Haunted House Party Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is missing the very last line. The end of the song goes "Traditions died at a haunted house party last night, somebody sound out for the body bagpipes." |
Sage Francis – The Write Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is the first in a series of songs. The second is "Rewrite" and the third is "Threewrite". They're all similar in terms of lyrical construction, but vary wildly in terms of the meaning and when they were made. This song is obviously the first, right after the break-up of a relationship. From the production quality you can tell that it was made a while ago, when Sage was younger. The second song ("Rewrite") was made later, and is angrier in tone. It takes place after the first, when the narrator has grown bitter The third song ("Threewrite") is the last and most recent, and takes place long after the first two, when the narrator has come to terms with the break-up and now considers it a vital part of his life, despite what it put him through. |
Sage Francis – Rewrite Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Just an FYI -- this is the second song in a series. The first is "The Write", this is the second, and the third is "Threewrite". |
Sage Francis – Threewrite Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is actual the third song in a series (thus the name). The first is "The Write" (credited to Xaul Zhan, for some odd reason). The second is "Rewrite". And then this song. The first one is sad and depressed, as the woman had just broken up with Sage. The second one is bitter and angry. This, the third one, is more about finding closure. |
Broken Bells – The Ghost Inside Lyrics | 14 years ago |
“She sold her love to a modern man…” - Prostitution “Did it all for the dollar…” — Again, prostitution “She got no future just a love to endure” — “Love” in this sense means physical love (i.e. “making love”). Saying she has to endure it means that it’s her job. “No future” obviously means that she has no other prospects. Also, keep in mind that "Giving up the ghost" is a phrase that means dying after hanging on for awhile (e.g. a beat-up car can be said to have “gave up the ghost” after it finally breaks down). So "she gave up the ghost inside" means the prostitution has finally killed her inside (figuratively, I think, not literally). |
Dessa Darling – 551 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"It's like the anesthesia despite the man that leaves ya" I always heard this line as "UP the anesthesia, SPITE the man that leaves ya". Also, I just realized that this line: "A man can keep you sane five-hundred-and-fifty days/A year and a half, give or take an afternoon" is a reference to the title: "551". I'm assuming it's about the day a relationship failed? The first verse seems to suggest adultery? |
Cage – Nothing Left to Say Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"Camu" referenced in the song is Camu Tao, a rapper with whom Cage was affiliated with on the Def Jux label and in the "Weatherman" group. They were pretty good friends. Camu recently died of lung cancer, which was pretty tragic, and nearly everyone on Def Jux has been paying tribute to him. This song is aimed at a rapper named Vast Aire, who Cage claims was using Camu's death as a way to sell his records. Sorta like "I knew Camu, so buy my stuff". Cage blasted him for it on MySpace (although he later edited it out and apologized). |
Sage Francis – Hang Time (Bang Bang Boogie) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Love this song; it's one of Sage's lesser known b-sides from the Makeshift Patriot EP. Wish it had more exposure. I think it's about Sage witnessing (repeated?) domestic violence and fantasizing(?) about wreaking revenge on the abusive husband. I love the imagery in the song, though, and his word play is in top form. |
Sage Francis – Cup Of Tea Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Can't believe nobody commented on this one. I love this song. It's fairly obvious that the other person referenced in the song is Sage himself. Lines like "Altered refelctions/His whole aura is see-through" point to that. |
Sage Francis – Going Back To Rehab Lyrics | 17 years ago |
At first I thought this song was supposed to be about Sage's Dad/Grandpa/father-figure, but some of the lines later in the song don't jive with this. I'm not quite sure what Sage's message in this song is supposed to be, but I think it may have something to do with rediscovering God or faith. The last line is particularly indicative of this, as I'm pretty sure that AA and other addiction groups have various steps. Usually one of these steps includes turning to God or something like that. The whole addict/drunk theme is a metaphor for faith. I guess Sage "quit" religion and got clean, but finds himself going back to it like an addict. One of the other songs on this album, "Hoofprints in the Sand", has a line about acting different "when there's atheists around", and then later praying "when the chips are down". Also, the "Dead-Again Christian" line in this song has been used several times before in Sage's past songs, which I guess is a good description of his beliefs. My guess is that he bounces back between being a christian and falling out of the faith, over and over. I think this song is also a lament for the secularization of society. I think Sage is talking about God himself in the first part of the song, and society's increasing religious apathy has God "living in a hole"; maybe Sage is talking about the whole "God is Dead" thing? I'm not sure, because he does have some pretty cynical things to say about religion in general. Overall, this song is amazing. |
Slug – The River Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The last line, I always thought of as "Because you got to meet the SUN before you got to meet my son". I can see the Christ/Heaven angle, though. There's an alternate version (or remix, if you prefer) of this song, with slightly altered lyrics. Personally, I like it better. It was done by The Opus on his album "First Contact 001". It's a completely different version of the song, with different production and what sounds like re-recorded vocals. Anybody who likes this song, check out this other version. It's awesome. |
