I can't believe I am the first person to comment on this great song. To me, this song is about a man who is in the middle of a breakup with his girlfriend (or vice versa) and the thoughts running through his head while she is saying that the relationship is over. The woman is trying to explain that things can't continue as they have, while the man acknowledges that none of this is really much of a surprise. The writing has been on the wall for quite some time. I've always attributed the line: "you ain't doing nothing that I don't already know when you hide your sorry head in pillows" as meaning that one person is admitting to some form of infidility, whether physical or emotional. The other person simply thinks, "this is not a surprise." |
