The King Blues – Headbutt Lyrics
|
I love the imagery of "when she kissed me it felt like a headbutt"--like it's so passionate, so powerful, like she's kissing him so hard. |

This song makes me wish that Dave had done more of the lead singing on this album...it's AWESOME when he just belts it. |

Tegan and Sara – Hell Lyrics

I don't think it's possible for Tegan and Sara to release a song that I don't love. No doubt the rest of the album will be just as great. |

The Knees – Lilo Lyrics
|
I'm pretty sure this is about Lindsay Lohan - "Lilo," here, is no fictional character. "You've got your dress and your purse and your big sunglasses on your face" is, I think, a reference to "Lilo's" imitation of Marilyn Monroe - though I'll admit, the rest of the things Deana sings about could be applicable to many other people. |

Nikki Cleary – Hated Lyrics

I can't listen to this song without giggling--it's so happy-sounding, but the lyrics are so bitchy. |

Vagiant – Seven Lyrics
|
I can't decide whether or not this song is creepy or cute--either way, it's about someone who feels the need to 'protect' an ex-lover, primarily by beating up anyone who 'breaks their heart.' Sloppiness aside, Vagiant is far too underrated. |

The Hush Sound – The Boys Are Too Refined Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
Seems to me like this song comes from the point of view of one of the 'girls who buck and bite' from e.e. cummings' "the boys i mean are not refined"--or, rather, from the point of view of someone who'd like to be one of those girls. |

The Hold Steady – Positive Jam Lyrics
|
It seems to me as though this song is about starting a stretch of time (namely the `00 decade) out with something positive after so many other time periods that weren't. I think it might give some insight as to the name of the band--the Hold Steady--as well; a 'positive jam' represents the band, whose message, as outlined by the last part of the song, is to 'hold steady.' |

(+44) – Little Death Lyrics
|
I still can't shake the feeling that this song is about using sex as a sort of therapy--or, if nothing else, a way to clear the mind of more troublesome or negative thoughts. "Little death," of course, could refer to the French euphemism "le petite mort" for orgasm. |

Grandaddy – Poisoned at Hartsy Thai Food Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
As far as I can see, this song is about two people at a restaurant who, much to the shock (and, understandably, dismay) of the establishment's owner, become sick--or, perhaps, die--their food having been poisoned. Who committed the crime, as it were, is anybody's guess. |

Lit – Miserable Lyrics
|
Rather than a relationship's progression, I see this song as the musings of someone who is feeling a sort of unrequited love for a person who they are probably close to (i.e., "just friends"). When 'they make him come,' it's possible that he's masturbating to them. 'You make me complete,' of course, tells of his love for the person, and 'you make me completely miserable' shows that, yes, it is unrequited, and so it makes him miserable at the same time. |

The Grates – nothing sir Lyrics

Initially, I wasn't crazy about this song, but right now I can't stop listening to it. It's definitely about the singer trying to convey that she's not a bad person for doing drugs. |

Count Zero – Radium Eyes Lyrics
|
As explained (somewhat) by the phrase 'day meets night in your eyes', 'radium eyes' probably means that whoever he's singing about has eyes that, at different points in time, are both dark and light. (Pure radium, when fresh, is a brilliant white, but it blackens when it's exposed to air.) |

The Blow – Babay (Eat a Critter, Feel Its Wrath) Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
All right; taken at surface value, this song does seem to follow reidmix's interpretation, but I think it may go deeper than that.
"And I thank my lucky stars everyday for indoor plumbing
'Cause I know nobody knows where I'd have ended up without it"
It's obvious where we'd have 'ended' up, or at the bare minimum where our 'ends' would be.
"Caught a bit of my fur in your teeth, and you ate me"
This line radiates imagery relating to cunnilingus, where 'fur' must be pubic hair.
"And now I lay here steaming"
This line could allude to the time period directly post-coitus, where 'steam' translates to 'sweat'.
In short, sexual bodies are the same bodies from which we defecate, perspire and grow hair.
Just wanted to open up another window for interpretation, though the other--comparing the cycle of falling in love with going through the digestive system and then being shit out--is equally valid. For me, at least, it goes both ways, or is maybe a mixture of the two. |

Freezepop – Plastic Stars Lyrics

Makes me think of a couple, lying in bed post-coitus, listening to music and talking while looking at plastic glow-in-the-dark stars affixed to the ceiling. Cute song for sure. :] |

Agreed, for the Billy vs. Tommy deal as well as the meaning.
Billy Idol's great and all, but this particular song can't do without Tommy James and the Shondells. *sigh* |

54-40 – She Lies To Me Lyrics

This song is pretty straightforward--a guy's girlfriend (or perhaps just a regular, if female, friend) is always complimenting him, and he's convinced that she's just trying to make him feel good but isn't sincere in any of it. |

Teddybears – Ahead of My Time Lyrics

This is just a transcription, a.k.a. what I heard. It's a pretty straight-forward song, to be sure, but there are more than likely some errors so don't take it as the be-all and end-all. Corrections are appreciated~ |

Simon and Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
Does anyone else get the "nuclear war" vibe from this?
"And the people bowed and prayed/ To the neon god they made"
Maybe it's just me, but also it seems as if the narrator is against this, as well: " 'Fools,' said I/ 'You do not know' "
As for the "People hearing without listening/ People talking without speaking/ People writing songs that voices never share/ And no one dared/ Disturb the sound of silence" bit, I think that could relate to those that are opposed to nuclear war, the subcategory of those people that don't speak up about it, and the officials that keep at it despite any protest.
That's just my take on it - don't know if anyone else sees it that way, but, eh.
[For the record, I'm actually twelve. :P] |
