I think this song is perfectly crafted to appeal to many audiences. Soft, heart-felt acoustic picking with Billie Joe's pretty voice, starkly contrasted with full on distorted guitar rocking; to appeal to those who like both kinds of music. Also, the message of the song has been reported as many different things, such as the death of Billie Joe's father, September eleventh, and anything to do with the character "St. Jimmy." All these possible interpretations just show how so many different types of people could get personal meaning from the song. Don't get me wrong, Green Day are extremely talented at writing catchy songs. But they also, evidently, have mastered the 'art' of appealing to many different crowds and getting tons of airplay. |

It's quite possible he fucked up the lyrics, if you youtube the song you can see the actual video of the take that's on Picaresqueities, it's just Colin and it's live, so it might have been just a preliminary take before they decided to axe it from the full length. Just a thought. |
