Beck – Chemtrails Lyrics
|
Beck explained the song to EW.com, saying that "Chemtrails" was based on "the idea of a man and woman watching the sunset, and they're looking at all these beautiful colors that are coming from the trails of jets – the idea that something so beautiful could come from something that's a by-product of something so industrial."
So no, it is not really about the chemtrail conspiracy. By the way, I found this quote by a simple Google search, so....

That's really the heart and soul of the song. Beck himself even said so. |

Joanna Newsom – Good Intentions Paving Company Lyrics

I just happened to discover this song this week (after residing on my ipod for a couple years) and I just happened to have gone through a break up - and the range of emotions expressed in this song are so spot on....not wanting to go, but knowing you have to.
Mark my words, this is indeed a song about breaking up when one knows they must, even though they aren't emotionally ready. |

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – Home Lyrics

There is no deep meaning to this song, as the lyrics are pretty strait forward. But just by judging by the comments posted here, as well as what several people I know say (and even my own reaction), if one were to look for a deeper meaning in this song, it would be a feeling of pure joy. |

The 1900s – When I Say Go Lyrics

While I think the line "rescued by better things than man" is a, for lack of a better word, nod at the supernatural, I think it can also mean that the speaker does not need a man - the speaker can find fulfillment without a relationship. |

Vienna Teng – Radio Lyrics

|
Ok, I like your interpretation, but I don't quite see why you think it happens in San Fransisco.
I think its important to ask what country the "radio" is in to. I assume the USA, though there's no text to really support that theory. But IF it IS the US, then the suicide bombing COULD NOT have happened in San Fransisco because of the following lyrics:
come on it'll never happen here, oh no
we are not some third world country
this is not some third world country
It is implied by these lyrics that this type of bombing will never happen in the country the "radio" is in. San Fransisco is part of the US, so if the radio WAS in the US...well, I already said that.
Like I said, I may have missed something. So what makes you say it happened in San Fransisco? |

Brewer & Shipley – One Toke Over The Line Lyrics

But WHICH home? Is it an Earthly home coming, or is it a song about going to one's eternal home? Considering all the religious language in the song, it very well could be the latter. If the speaker was on something stronger than grass (say, crack, which is also smoked or "toked,") he could be having a fatal overdose. |

Well, given the fact that SNZ don't usually do this, it does stand to reason they knew what they were doing with rhythm, adverbs, et al. |

Blitzen Trapper – Furr Lyrics
|
I think its easy to get hung up on asking if the speaker is just using a metaphor or if this really happened to the speaker (not the author, the speaker).
So....I think the meaning can be found in the refrain (as often times happens); Specifically the lines "You'ld better be sure / If you're making God a liar" and "If you're gonna get made / don't be afraid of what you've learned."
In this case, I think God does not actually mean God. I think God is a symbol for the way we're supposed to act. Then again, it doesn't quite fit with the line about "obedience to god." But I'm reading this as "this is how the humans do things - their society's rules, even if they seem alien and foreign, and this is how animals do things - they follow their instincts and pleasures and whatever suits them the best."

I'm sick of people ripping on Micheal Bay! He's the most brilliant Director of our time! Why, he's up there with Orson Welles and Hitchcock! Yeah, he's a genius!

"A cathedral versus love versus shame."
sounds like:
A Catherdral versus lovers' shame - which would be an interesting play on the sound of versus as opposed to lo-ver(ses).
But I think the line posted is the correct lyric. |

I believe the lyrics of this song aren't really that important, rather the feeling of the music itself, and the arrangements. Especially the vocal arrangements! Listen to this song on headphones sometime. There is A LOT going on in this song - even for TPS! |

The Polyphonic Spree – Section 30 (Watch Us Explode [Justify]) Lyrics

So Justify all your phases
When we're human
We're always guessing
These are the key lyrics to the song. Trying to figure out the exact meaning here. It could be about making one's own truth because we'll never know the real truth while we're human. But I don't believe Tim is that stupid to go with such an easy solution. No, I read this as someone saying "you can be right if its so damned important to you!" In other words, saying that whatever the person is so vehement about isn't really that important. Hmmm, maybe this is a song about AM talk radio, lol. |

This song just....speaks. It speaks so much, but the strange thing is that it speaks nothing. It almost begs the listener to bring their own interpretation.

The New Pornographers – My Rights Versus Yours Lyrics

In response to wrat:
I actually kind of wondered if there was an RIAA meaning to it. Here's an interesting twist - Matador (and I think Mint) refuse to join the RIAA (Matador actually dropped out of the RIAA because it was hurting their business).
There's also the fact that a year or so ago, a list was going around of Canadian artists who don't really care if you download their music because it means they're being listened too. TNP was on this list.
So given those two facts, it might very well be about the actions of the RIAA. |

Daft Punk – The Prime Time of Your Life Lyrics

Ok,firstly there is nothing in the song about an overweight girl. If its in the video, that's fine, but this is song meanings, not video meanings. / pedestal.
Now, something not mentioned yet is the relativity to television. Prime time. Especially coupled with the song "television rules the nation." And while this doesn't change the meaning - ie, get off your duff and live for the moment while you have the moment - it does provide an interesting commentary. Ie, don't live for the next episode of 24 or alias. |

The Polyphonic Spree – Lithium (Nirvana cover) Lyrics

Lesse....
I guess its tradition for them to do this at pretty much every show. I want to say they do it as a tribute to Nirvanna, and I am sure they have some tribute in it, but they make it their own as well. I just don't know how they make it their own yet. Maybe because they have been trying (unsuccessfully) to break the mold of the happy, cheery, feel good band. This song is kind of dark, kind of like they're saying "we ain't all flowers and rainbows!" |

I think this is the most accessable song on the new album thus far.
I LOVE how Kathryn and Neko's voices intermingle on this song!
I wonder if the Christina mentioned in this song is at all related to come crash from AC Newman's "The Small Wonder." Though that was Chrtistine, but...
Then again, it may just be the Contessa syndrome. |
