Iron & Wine – Peng! 33 (Stereolab cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
the monkey reference is definitely there to make us question our position on the evolution chart. he's saying there's a whole lot more progress to be made in the world, and if we fear it instead of diving headlong into the new with "curiosity", we'll be the ones left behind like cavemen and other less evolved ancestors of the modern human.

Iron & Wine – Burn That Broken Bed Lyrics 17 years ago
the mr.me explanation is possible, but i still think it has to be someone he's already been with, not a burning crush. when i think of a crush, or a woman i am dying to be with, i dont' think "when are you coming back." he makes the comparison to the bird coming home to sing, and if he were describing a crush, i don't think the bird going "home" would be the same as the bird coming to him.

just a thought.... my guess is it's about longing for reunion... not necessarily after a betrayal, just after separation for whatever reason.

Iron & Wine – He Lays in the Reins Lyrics 17 years ago
i think you guys are missing the obvious meaning and instead looking to add something convoluted. i don't say that to come across and high-handed or condescending. it's just that i don't think it makes sense for the song to be about the harsh plane. it's not like sam beam is a cowboy or anything. and the brokeback thing? dude, the word "laid" means more than just "doinked". the phrase "get your mind out of the gutter" comes to mind.

so my explanation of what i think is the more obvious interpretation...

it's about death, and he's drawing parallels between the horse's death and the rider's. the horse is "tuckered out and tame" from "all of the speed and strength he gave." the steed got "tangled too tight and too long" to keep the fight going.

similarly, the rider is the one of whom the "tuckered out" line is originally spoken, so it's him who is "wanting" from the day and may soon be found laid.

the clue that tells us that the rider is in a similar "tuckered out and tame" state as the horse is that when he brings the gray moon into the equation he says, "one more tired thing..." that's the clue that, in case we missed it, there are already two "tired things".

it's a farewell to the rider, but a premature one, as he's not yet dead, but could be soon found "laid." it could even be to sam beam's father, as i believe the original EP version of this song predates "sodom south georgia" which was about his late father's death and funeral.
