Robert Johnson – Come On In My Kitchen Lyrics 15 years ago
Yes, Shawn. This is my favorite of Bob's songs. I don't entirely agree with you corporal. Yes, of course the metaphores were a necessity. But I don't think that he's immitating a woman. But trying to re-entice the local slut, who was with his friend, then with him, & then ran off with another fella. "Come inside 'fore it rains" is his excuse to get her back in his house. She's in trouble with everyone else (maybe for being such a ho) & no one wants to give her sanctuary. She ain't got no more friends. Except Robert , of course.

Robert Johnson – I Believe I'll Dust My Broom Lyrics 15 years ago
Aside from these lyrics being some of the most fun of his songs, this is, in my opinion one of the most incredible recordings. This song demonstrates just what a truly amazing guitarist this man is. IT SOUNDS LIKE THERE'RE TWO FREGGIN' GUITARS!!!!!!!! And it's played so fast. It's amazing!!!! Just awesome.

This song is about impotence. Mr. Johnson loved the ladies. And the ladies loved him. He had one in almost every town he'd passed through. I guess sometimes even some one who sold his soul to the devil can't get it up.

NegativeNancyy is right too. I, for some reason, couldn't find the words to portray just what she elaborated upon. I'm going to see them on the 29th! I can't wait.

Arcade Fire – Cars and Telephones Lyrics 17 years ago
When I listen to this song, I get the impression that it's more about a relationship that once existed & is now over with. It seems like she in one way or another became famous & moved to Europe, where she now lives her life without him. Apparently she's moved on and he's just a footnote in the story of her life. But do they still talk on the phone? Maybe. Or maybe he just calls to hear her & hangs up.
In anycase, he's driving to the East Coast thinking of her, wondering if she still remembers what they shared. He likes "cars more than telephones," because it seems more productive, at least he's maiking progress getting closer to her, how ever farfrom her he still ends up. On the phone, yeh, he can hear her voice but that doesn't bring her any closer to him. So he's taking the initiative (how ever crazy it seems).
It's definately a song dealing with "lost" love, because he's lost all of his friends and she's the one he misses the most. He remembers when they made love and she left him, maybe ultimately but it's something that is too emotional for him to be able to cope with: he has to repress it.
So he's driving & he's driving & he's getting weary. But "fuck it." He's crossed the point of no return. He's almost to the ocean... But it's an exercise in futility. Because he can't simply drive across the water, (O, but if he could only figure out a way) he'd have it made.

I absolutely love this song. It's beautifully sung, orchestrated & so complex in it's simplicity. I can appreciate all of the comments made with regards to a long distance relationship but I think it misses.
