Bright Eyes – From a Balance Beam Lyrics 16 years ago
this is one of the best songs i've ever heard. to me it's about going through the process of questioning god and religion after a life of simply accepting it without question. it's such a tough thing to handle... when you want to believe in a god but something in you is unable to accept it. It's liberating at first to feel free of those beliefs but then it is depressing. so much so that you hope for the end of the world to prove yourself wrong.

but i love that so many people interprete this song in different ways. that is half the brilliance.

"but i dont, stay, cuz there's a little bit inside me that likes this pain"
'I've been throwing pointless flares into your night"
i love both of those lines soooo much!

but i think this song is about being in love with someone who is too needy and needs you to be there for them when you need someone who can do some of the fighting themselves. it hurts cuz you wanna help them but you're not strong enough and you need to take care of youself.

the paper in the hand thing paints a nice picture in my mind.. that reminds me of the movie Titanic.

this
And when you think you've sinned
Do you fall upon your knees?
And do you sit within your picture?
Do you still forget the breeze?

is what throws me off the most. BUT i think they are rhetorical questions he's asking her.. as if to say she'd handle the situation the same way if she was in his place. cuz i agree the breeze thing is like blowers daughter, yet if he's speaking to the "you" (his gf, according to my interpretation) it doesn't make sense. BUT he's trying to ask her if she'd be able to forget the breeze (his ex) if she was him?

and the lines
"And she may rise, if I sing you down
And she may wisely cling to the ground"
are about his ex taking him back. I see their relationship as something that moved really fast and was wicked intense, but so much so that they argued a lot and had a bad breakup. so it'd be wise of her to cling to the ground and not go back to him if he asked her to get back with him.

ok this is my (long) interpretation of this song...
the 'you' he is singing to is someone he is currently in a relationship with and the 'she' is his ex. He starts with "this has got to die" and i think "this" refers to his feelings for his ex resurfacing.
Next he says "you can keep me pinned.." meaning he is involved enough with the current girlfriend to care and to continue the relationship despite the fact that she can't "paint an elephant" as good as the ex. i see the painting of the elephant as more of an artistic, beautiful thing. plus the elephant typically symbolizes power, like the ex had an intensely strong power to make him only want to be with her while the new girlfriend has the weaker ability to tease him, she can keep him pinned but he still thinks of others.
Next I think he's portraying the way the ex was upset/emotional a lot and it probably is what ended their relationship, yet at the same time it drove him crazy for her.
The next two stanzas confuse me the most, but I think it's just showing that the relationship with the current girlfriend is just as complicated as the one with the ex. he isn't sure of her intentions. and she might have issues just like he does. possibly with an ex of her own?

next he basically says if he leaves his gf for his ex theres a good chance the ex won't take him back because he's hurt her before. He probably used her for sex after their relationship and he wouldn't be surprised if she thought he was doing the same again.

I think the gf found out that he has feelings for the ex and so they're fighting about it. "you're already gone" meaning she left. but (my fav part) he wants his gf to tell him if she wants him to lie (bottle up his feelings for the ex and pretend they don't exist) because "this has got to die" (this being (still) his feelings for the ex)

it's such a tragedy because he's in love with both the girls but he'll always have more feelings for the ex, but she probably wouldn't take him back. I imagine him and the ex had a really intense, passionate, quick relationship. While him and the current gf have a more practical one.

i absolutely adore the way he uses repetition of "let me out"
At first he says "and you hate me so good that you just let me out" like she's letting him out of her life without a fuss, but then he keeps repeating it over and over and changing it's intensity until it's like him screaming LET ME OUT because he wishes there was something she would do to somehow let him out of the situation he feels so trapped in (being in love with her)

this song is such a perfect description of a love/hate relationship.
