So, we're alone again I wish it were over, we seem to never end, (Here he is saying that whenever they are both alone, they go back to each other, and they just get hurt again, at least he does anyway. He wants the relationship to end, because it's like an addiction I guess is a good analogy, He keeps going back to her, and she keeps hurting him, nothing ever changes) Only get closer, to the point where i can take no more, (This could mean one of two things, or both depending on how you look at it. One thing is that they get closer, and they are at the point that he can't take it anymore, as even though they are close, he she won't ever be good for him. Also it could mean that they keep getting closer to the point that he won't be able to take it anymore, although judging be the rest of the song, he hasn't gotten there, and probably never will, it's just this imaginary line in his head that when he crosses he will finally be out of this relationship.) The clouds in your eyes, down your face they pour, (The clouds are the problems that the girl obviously has, they show in her face, you can see that she is sad by looking at her, the pouring down her face obviously means she is crying, letting the problems out, onto him) Won’t you be the new one burn to shine? (This is referring to the way that she always brings him back with her depression, she burns, i.e. is not good to herself, and the like, so that she shines, and he sees her) I take the blue ones every time; walk me down your broken line, (This line means that he will always go back to her when she is sad, and that no matter how bad it is going to get for him, he will always go down that line with her, and be there for her when she needs it) All you have to do is cry Yes, all you have to do is cry (He’s saying that if she cries he will come to her, simple as that.) Hush my baby now, (This is the last initiate thing said here for a while, he is still referring to her as baby, as in he still loves her) Your talking is just noise and won't lay me down (now he's finally gotten to the point that he can't take it anymore, he needs out, no matter how many times he has fallen for her tears before he can't do it now, she is talking to him about her life, and probably how awful it is, and he's lost the ability to deal with it,) Amongst your toys in a room where i can take no more, (I think that the toys refer to her being a little kid on the inside, like she hasn't grown up and adjusted to the world yet. The toys could also be a metaphor for her emotions which she uses as a distraction from everything else, much as a child does with toys, by getting caught up in her sadness she never has to face reality) The clouds in your eyes, down your face they pour, (She is crying again, and he is right back where he was) Won’t you be the new one burn to shine? (See above comment on this line) I take the blue ones every time, Walk me down your broken line, All you have to do is cry, (even though he has gotten to his breaking point he is going back to her, she needs him , and he knows that , no matter how many times he breaks he will always let her drag him into her vicious cycle) Photographs and brightly colored paper, Are your masks you wear in this caper that is our life. (Here I think that he is saying that she may look happy to other people, she puts on an act in order to look normal, and people buy that. The photographs refer to her past, when she was happy) We walk right into the strife, (He’s saying that he always goes head first into trouble, he knows that being with her will hurt him, yet he continues to do it.) And a tear from your eye brings me home, (This is a particularly interesting line. In the song so far, all we’ve really heard about is her need for him, but nothing of his need for her, just that he goes back because he has to. This line shows his need for her, he wants to feel like someone needs him, like he is wanted, and she does this for him , which is the real reason he keeps going back to her) Won’t you be the new one burn to shine, I take the blue ones every time, Walk me down your broken line, All you have to do is cry, (here he’s saying despite everything, he’s always going to be there) So that’s my long rambling song meaning, if you read the whole thing I will be incredibly proud |

This is just my first impression of the lyrics and I could be totally wrong. However here I go anyway. I think that this song is about a totally antisocial guy, maybe something happend to him in the past (should I just get along with myself? I never did get along with everybody else) and I agree with the river being used as a metaphor for life, although I think that instead of looking at the river with distain, and therfore wanting to end his life, I think that he is wondering if he should jump into the river, and become part of life. I think this not because of anything in the actual lyrics, but more from listening to the song. The tone that is used in the line "this river is wild" is not one of distain, one rather I would say of amazement. Also I do not think that the "man in red" is satan, but rather the ringmaster. I think that the circus is used alot in this album as a metaphor for life, and so the ringmaster could actually be seen as god, and the ringmaster wants him to become part of the world "boy I think you'd better get along" The main reason I see the ring master as a good force is that I think the second part is still supposed to be the ringmaster talking "But you always hold your head up high, cause it’s a long, long, long way down. This town was meant for passing through, boy it ain’t nothin’ new, now go and show ‘em that the world stayed round. But it’s a long, long, long way down" it's like he's saying, be careful, but stay proud, believe in yourself. Anyway, getting back to the point, I think the guy is definately wondering wheather or not he should enter the world again, become part of society, or maybe to start a relationship. This is shown in the lines " listen to the sound of the world, don’t watch it turn. I just want to show you what I know and catch you when the current lets you go." The first part of that set of lines would refer to jumping in, the need to be part of the world "don't watch it turn" the second part is the narrator's wish to be part of the world, he yearns to take care of someone, but he doesn't know if he should. The narrator's problems with people are shown in the lines " Sometimes I’m nervous when I talk, shake a little. Sometimes I hate the line I walk. " I think the shake a little part is kind of refering to fear. so that was my long winding thought process , sorry if it was kind of random, I just typed what I thought as I thought it. |

| I really don't understand how people can think that this song is sexist... whether you want to acknowledge it or not, fathers play a big role in a girl's life, whether he is there or not. A father is usually the first male influence that a girl has, so how could her view of men not stem out from her father? It is a beautiful song about loving your family, and not messing people up forever by abandoning them, and if you don't like the song, don't listen to it, no one is making you. | |

| I think that the line "be with me tonight" doesn't actually have much to do with getting laid. I think that it connects more to the line later in the song "I wake up scared I wake up strange" because the singer just wants someone there with him when he wakes up terrifed, he doesn't want to be alone.
