Now I'm lost in my own town / It seems like someone moved the streets around

Great lyrics. Powerful song.

The Killers – Human Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't think the song is about dying. Quite the opposite, it's about living.

The Killers – Human Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song has the same message as Katy Perry's Firework. It's about not being afraid of being all you can be, remembering you're alive, letting go of the past and going for gold to fulfil your potential.

Talking Heads – Once In A Lifetime Lyrics 13 years ago
It's interesting to compare with another great song on fleeting, futile existence: "Time" by Pink Floyd. I think both songs speak of empty lives. "Time" tells of emptiness through inaction. "Once In A Lifetime" tells of emptiness through action.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 13 years ago
For me, this song is all about superficial people (especially women) too wrapped up in acquisition of material possessions, who thinks money and earthly things can buy spirtual peace and an afterlife.

I thought the line was "they call me ho" not "hell". Makes sense to me.

Dr. Dre – The Next Episode Lyrics 17 years ago
One more link. An interview with Axelrod, where he talks about the Dre track, and check this - he's South Central raised like Dre...

Here's a page which explains everything about the sample:

Click "The Edge" link under the picture to hear the track (I guess, instrumental version) and be prepared to have your musical knowledge expanded, oball.

Brilliant, but just waiting for the "da-da-da-dahh" bit which never comes!

Nice bit of research, yes?

Dr. Dre – The Next Episode Lyrics 17 years ago
From Wikipedia:

"David McCallum recorded in the 1960s some albums for Capitol Records with producer David Axelrod, such as Music: A Bit More of Me (1966) and Music: It's Happening Now! (1967). The most well known of his pieces today is arguably The Edge, which was sampled by Dr. Dre as the intro and riff to the track The Next Episode."

I don't know who Missin Linx are but they're obviously down with that 60s sh*t just like Dre is.

There really is no problem here, all hip-hop is based on sampling.

We gon' rock it til the wheels fall off!!!

Dr. Dre – California Love Lyrics 18 years ago
Gotta show the love for "California Love", one of the finest odes to the state, and in particular LA. But look at the lyrics, is this a dedication to the whole of California or only a part...?

Note the places namechecked, especially in the chorus. Areas like Watts, Inglewood and Compton. By concentrating on these 'hoods' the song is fundamentally a shout out to a specific demographic. Not Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Santa Barbara and the more famous white-centric upmarket places. The one mention of Hollywood informs us that famous area considers itself lacking in something desirable that can be found in South Central (a soul perhaps).

So while the beat and hooks are enjoyed by anyone no matter where they are from, Dre and Tupac are only showing respect for "their" California. This contrasts with what would be a more universally written lyric (perhaps by an outsider or non-rapper) that name checks all the places and themes the California tourist board would like to hear.

While this is nothing unusual for West Coast rap, I find it especially enjoyable in California Love because of the wide appeal of this track since its creation is independent on whether the listener has spent time in Watts and so on. Dr Dre and Tupac successfully stayed true to their roots whilst at the same time making a song for the masses.

And yes, it is the best side :)
