Perfume Genius – Queen Lyrics 9 years ago
I hear the fourth line as "flower bloom at my fear", and "marry" as "we're here".

Another incredible tune from Perfume Genius, with a powerful video to match.

I love how he presents male effeminacy that is not at all apologetic and really quite tough.

I can't believe there are no comments on this! Awesome song with a great clip.

As for the meaning, I think it means that he writer deeply misses the 80s...

This was amazing on Jimmy Fallon, bodes well for the album.

However I think it might be "come on God hear my sick prayer"

Daughn Gibson – In the Beginning Lyrics 11 years ago
I feel like there are a few "In the beginning"s missing from these lyrics...

Apart from that, I think the song is about someone trying to escape responsibility for their past actions by asserting that they have changed to such a degree that they are no longer the same person.

Daughn Gibson – Tiffany Lou Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm guessing the show that Tiffany and her father were on different episodes of was COPS, as Inner Circle perform the theme song (Bad Boys).

So I'm guessing that this is about a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. Apart from that though...

Perfume Genius – Hood Lyrics 12 years ago
a truly amazing song about the things we keep hidden from our loved ones because we're scared that if we revealed our true selves then we'd be unloveable.

Also the film clip is amazing, I find Mike Hadreas' performance riveting.

M83 – Intro [Feat. Zola Jesus] Lyrics 12 years ago
Agreed! Possibly album of the year.

This seems to consolidate a lot of m83s previous work, which makes it a highly suitable Intro to such an ambitious album.

Kanye West – Runaway Lyrics 13 years ago
Amazing song, but I don't think it has much to do with the Taylor Swift incident. Seems to me it's more an admission of his faults as a partner. So unusual for a hip-hop artist renowned for his bravado to reveal so much self-analysis, bordering on self-loathing.

Sorry, I meant "her father". Clearly a girl.

Jay Reatard – A Whisper (There Is No Sun) Lyrics 13 years ago
I think you might be right, "bleed" would fit in with JR's usual modus operandi.

I thought it might be "I whisper..." at first too, but then he starts addressing "you". I guess it works both ways though.

I'm pretty sure it's "Let it sear through my thighs", not tights!

The Smiths – Death of a Disco Dancer Lyrics 14 years ago
I always thought this song was about the kind of nightclub violence that was going on in the acid house scene in the 80s at places like Manchester's famous Hacienda club. The acid house movement was supposed to be all about Peace, Love, Unity, Rave, but people kept getting shot and bashed to death.

Perfume Genius – Mr Petersen Lyrics 14 years ago
At first I thought that this song was a slightly repetitive Magnetic Fields knockoff, but it slowly worked its way into my subconscious and now I can't stop listening to it.

Fairly obviously about an inappropriate relationship between a teen and his teacher. What's interesting is that, despite the fact that this relationship was borderline abusive ("If I could convince him I loved him enough. Enough, enough, enough.", where the repeated "enough"s sound like teh narrator protesting against continuing a sexual act) the narrator has an obvious affection for the man.

I think the 3rd last line might be "I know you were ready to go", however.

Not too sure, but there definitely seems to be homoerotic undertones here, especially in the banter during the bridge.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero Lyrics 14 years ago
Kamikaze pilots? WTF??

How is this song not about filthy, dominant/submissive sex?

Get your leather on, anyone? Try and hit the spot? GET TO KNOW IT IN THE DARK???

Definitely a song sung by a woman who likes her men on their knees in a gimp mask. Very hot.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Half Ghost Lyrics 14 years ago
I love how the melody emerges after he sings "on some song on the radio".

It's like the song is emerging into the song from the radio, almost as if it were half-ghost.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Man O' War Lyrics 14 years ago
By far my favourite song from Vs. Children.

It seems to me that the first verse obviously describes the death of a father, and the second verse describes the ongoing effect that this has had on the child who was aged 9 when his father was killed by jellyfish.

My favourite song off the new album so far. A friend of mine has dubbed it "Maps" for 2009!

I hate to call on an old theme, but it seems to me it might be a couple having addiction issues. He finds her passed out/overdosed and tells her that he will follow her if she goes, probably by taking an OD also.

Band of Horses – Is There a Ghost Lyrics 15 years ago
"I really tdon't hink there's a deeper meaning to this...It's actually annoying for me to read some of these interpretations!

It seems to me this song is about the sound and energy, rallying people at a gig, rather than being scrutinized for meanings. "

Vampire Weekend – Oxford Comma Lyrics 15 years ago
OK, this could be totally off the track, but here goes....

The Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, was know as both Honest John and Little John. He very vocally supported Bush's War On Terror, even going so far as to make a speech at the United Nations.

No? It just seems to make more sense in the context than Lil John.

Jay Reatard – My Shadow Lyrics 15 years ago
At first I thought this was the usual, a song about a girl.

But then I read the lyrics, and it seems more like a song about insanity, a guy who's afraid of his own shadow.

Whatever it is, the transition from verse to chorus sends shivers up my spine.

I usually detest pop, but this song is incredible.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Turn Into Lyrics 16 years ago
I think "turn into" is more of a metaphor for merging with someone in a relationship, rather than wanting to be like someone. It seems to me that Karen is in the car (possibly going to visit this lover) and she's thinking about the relationship, realising that it's over. She wishes it could have worked, because this person is "the only thing I ever..."

But the next verse makes it clear that the window has shut on any possibility of the relationship working, because the other person has found someone who is becoming their world, turning into the only thing they ever (knew? loved?).

The bridge seems to infer that the narrator is not entirely blamless, and that she may have contributed to the breakup by cheating, or by keeping some kind of secret. She's gone out of her way to keep this secret, but wishes she could talk about with this lover.

Anyway, very sad song.

Beirut – Scenic World Lyrics 16 years ago
"i dunno if the lyrics of the song exactly sweep me away"

They totally sweep me away, especially when he sings "Where the sunsets are all..... breathtaking".

And yes, Scenic World (Version) on Lon Gisland is way better than the Gulag Orkestar version.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
The fourth verse is where it becomes obvious that the relationship has soured or ended, and with the clever double-meaning of "down below" he could be saying that she used to reveal her deeper emotions, or her private parts, to him. But she clearly doesn't any more. He then goes on to give what is possibly the most poetic deascription of sex in any literature ever, with the lines about the holy dove.

The final verse is so incredibly bleak that there can be no doubt that this song is about a relationship that was once beautiful but now lies in ruins. Not only does the narrator confess to outgunning his lover (thereby falling into the same "love as contest" trap that he warned hs ex-lover about in a previous verse), he also questions the very existence of God, the basis for the entire metaphor that the narrative is based on. With the final lines of the song, the narrator reiterates his belief that love is not triumphal and glorious, but rather is an act of broken, but beautiful, submission.

I could obsess over this song for years. Also, I recently broke up with someone after 10 years, so this song has added resonance right now.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song explores the complexities of love using a biblical metaphors. Hallelujah literally means "let us praise God", and I think Leonard Cohen (who wrote the song) likens love to the purest expression of praising God.

In the first verse the narrative introduces the idea of King David (who is uspposed to have written some of the book of Psalms) working on a hymn of love to God, and Cohen infers that this can be related to the love of a man (the narrator) for a woman. The idea that the love has soured is introduced early in the song and slyly, when he asks (tells) the woman "You don't really care for music, do ya?", implying that she doesn't care for/understand love.

For some reason the second verse switches to the third person, possibly to distance the narrator from his own experience, and possibly to broaden the impact to the listener. It describes falling for the woman, drawing on the story of Samson and Delilah to represent a man being bewitched and eventually broken by his love for a woman.

The third verse reverts to the first person, and he seems to be trying to hurt the woman by assuring her that she's not the only one he's been with or loved, but also makes himself seem vulnerable by admitting that he only chose to live with someone once she came along. He lets her know that love is not the contest she seems to think it is, that it isn't about conquest but submission to a beautiful but cruel master

Jens Lekman – People Who Hate People Lyrics 16 years ago
OK, I think there are a few problems with these lyrics, which is understandable cause the recording is so crap. It sounds a bit like Mick Jagger, but I suspect it's not, and I find the line about "resistant shoes" hard to swallow.

And I'm pretty sure that it's "Brothers, sisters, join me"

The Magnetic Fields – Take Ecstasy With Me Lyrics 16 years ago
The "take ecstasy" chorus always confused me, as it seemed to have little to do with the verses.

A friend of mine suggested that it suggests a certain melancholy, in that taking "e" might make everything seem OK temporarily, but only in the short term.

Jkmann, that is very well put. You've done a great job of reconciling our views, and have allowed me greater insight into how the Christian faith relates to the real world. While I can never be a Christian, I have a greater respect for your faith as a result of your post. Thank you.

The Magnetic Fields – Take Ecstasy With Me Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I can't explain the impact these lyrics had on me when I first read them. I was completely ignorant of the implicit violence in this song until I sat down and actually read the lyrics. When I realised tha this was not a happy song at all, but a devastating account of a hate crime I almost broke down and cried. That one line "We got beat up just for holding hands" is like an ice-pick to the heart, and speaks volumes about intolerance.

I found a definition of "raccoon eyes": discoloration of tissue around the eyes suggestive of a basilar skull fracture.

Big Star – Kangaroo Lyrics 17 years ago
I can't believe noone has posted on this song! It's one of the saddest, most fractured and beautiful songs ever.

I love how sparse the song is, and how the feedback and droning guitars turn what should have been a joyous love ode into a frightening and cold-hearted dirge. Hooray for drug addiction and misery!

Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics 17 years ago
"The same ability to choose is in me, Sufjan Stevens, John Wayne Gacy, Adam & Eve and in you."

I think that the entire point of this song is that many aspects of your personality are NOT a matter of choice, that all people have inherent darkness in them that they deal with the best they can. Gacy's was that he felt compelled to kill young boys, and who knows what Sufjan's is?

Interpol – Roland Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm sorry Bobster, but for someone claiming such incredible analytical skills, "Ripper + Poland = Roland" is the worst example of offering evidence to support a hypothesis that I have ever come across. It's on a par with The Bible Code and other such nonsense.

I get the sense that this song has a political edge. As a butcher Roland quite innocently carries knives around town, but this act is construed as a dangerous and subversive one, and so he is caught and persecuted. Maybe the song is not directly about the Patriot Act, but I can see a definite link there.

Stars – Your Ex-Lover Is Dead Lyrics 17 years ago
I appreciate that everyone has their own interpretation, but I cannot stress enough how much I feel that this is NOT a christian song. Unless pre-marital affairs have suddenly entered the Christian discourse as a good thing.

But it is a beautiful song. I would love to know where the "When there's nothing left to burn..." quote comes from. It sounds a bit like Winston Churchill, no?
