Nirvana – Rape Me Lyrics 13 years ago
People keep interpreting this as if it's the only version that was ever made. There's an earlier version of this song that clearly supports the prison-rape meaning:

"Weight of both of them
has grinded to the ground
We owe him the pain he's made
He's afraid I'm well endowed"

The "favorite inside source" verse was added later on, and was about the media (specifically, journalist Lynn Hirschberg, then of Vanity Fair) spreading defamatory rumors of his personal life.

Nirvana – Rape Me (Home demo) Lyrics 13 years ago
Also:

Wrong: "we owe them the pay he's made/ He's afraid I'm not a self-endowed" (makes no sense)
Right: "we owe him the pain he's made/ He's afraid I'm well endowed" (makes much more sense)

Nirvana – Rape Me (Home demo) Lyrics 13 years ago
Wrong: "Rape me" (Opening line, after sound check)
Right: "Break me" (you can hear the K)

Wrong: "Since my embarrassment's gone" (Not even close)
Right: "This is my best friend's gun" (Very clear)

Wrong: "See ... me than to you" (mostly unclear)
Right: "She ... me left (less?) to you" (the SH is clear, as is the vowel sound)

Three Dog Night – Never Been To Spain Lyrics 17 years ago
to me, its a pretty simple message...

what does it matter if ive never been there? does that mean i cant appreciate what it has to offer? so what if i've never been to spain or england? i've never been to heaven, either, but i certainly like what i hear about it....

Pearl Jam – Do the Evolution Lyrics 18 years ago
now that ive read all the pages.....

@classicrock: we arent a species driven by self-concept. WE arent anything. YOURE a species driven by self-concept. live that way if you want, who am i to tell you otherwise? just keep in mind, itll be the death of you yet. have fun :)

@bkat: "this song" states that were the last evolutionary link? what about the rest of culture and society? at least "this song" is doing it in satire of the rest of society.

@everybody that insists everybody else "must" read 'ishmael':
........ just how much of the book did you understand?

Pearl Jam – Do the Evolution Lyrics 18 years ago
this song, along with the video, is about how human arrogance is ultimately destroying us. the first stanze sums up the tone of the rest of the song quite wonderfully:

"im ahead/i am man/im the first mammal to wear pants":
we honestly believe ourselves to be seperate from animals, and we use our achievement (wearing pants, of course, being an absurd "achievement"- this was possibly done intentionally) as justifications of this.
"im at peace/with my lust/i can kill, cuz 'in god i trust' ":
summing up the belief of, 'who cares if we kill off nedangered animals? theyre just animals; were top dog here, were all that counts!"

later in the song....

"this land is mine/this land is free/ill do what i want/irresponsibly!":

now that weve established superiority, weve decided we rule over everything. we can do anything we want with the world cuz its our world- every other species is insignifigant because its *our* world and not theres. who cares if were not responsible with the world? its ours, we can do anything we want with it!

this all comes to the point where he sings, "these ignorant indians, they got nothing on me!". indians, of course, would be ignorant for not realizing this human superiority, and now they might as well be as insignifigant as any animal. indians no longer fit in with this "one true way" of human superiority.

take this meaning, push it even further, and youve got the nazi belief of aryans being "the one true way". whats intresting, though, is that two of the biggest sources of argument- politics and religion- are based on the belief that theres only one, true way to handle things.

azzathoth- your talk with your friend shows that you know exactly what this song is about; man isnt any better (or worse!) then bacteria, because theres no such thing as "higher" or "lower" forms of life. once you start thinking there is, you get "justifications" of just about anything.

side-note: isnt it a tad ironic that this discussion developed political debates?

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – 1983 ... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) Lyrics 18 years ago
a lot of his songs seem to be about not wanting to live in the same world as everybody else, where everybody is told exactly what they can and cant do. the fact that even after hes told "and you know good and well, its beyond the will of god- and the grace of the king", he still does it- not just TRY, but actually does it- is a prime example of what seemed to be his belief of "i refuse to be limited to what others say i can do".

its interesting when you compare this to 'if 6 were 9', and at least a few select lines from 'are you experienced?'...

Queen – Bicycle Race Lyrics 18 years ago
@alfiebaby: yes. freddy mercury was gay. thank you for that tidbit of knowledge that was presented in no relation to the song.

@esais64: the "person who created a kind of drug" would probably be albert hoffman, judging from your description. he was known for discovering LSD by accidently spilling the chemical on his hand; the experience happened while he was riding his bike.

the fact that freddy plainly states "i dont believe in peter pan" (peter pan, of course, being an androgynous character with youthful charms) seems to imply that it isnt about homosexuality or bisexuality.

given the diversity of things freddy rejected in this song, and the insistant emphasis on wanting to ride a bicycle, i would say this is about nothing more then escapism.
