Pet Shop Boys – One Thing Leads To Another Lyrics 16 years ago
Yes, I agree that it's brilliant and very underrated - a fantastic and fast-moving PSB rap. I only realised when I was listening to this earlier that it's describes everything backwards, from the guy passing out in hospital to earlier when he's been sacked from his job - genius. It's a sort of funny but really sad story at the same time. The only thing I don't like about it is the chorus - it gets a bit repetitive.

Coldplay – Spies Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a brilliant song and allows a lot of different interpretations (as some people have already said.) It's one of my favourites by Coldplay. The "spies" can be a metaphor for any sorts of fears you have that cause you to worry constantly and maybe get a bit paranoid. For me, the spies are actually just other people around you - it can often seem like they're spies that I have to hide my personality from, because I'm scared of their reaction. The bit at the end with the realisation that actually "they can't touch you, cos they're just spies" is so touching, and makes me feel much better about conquering these kinds of fears.

Pet Shop Boys – A New Life Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is a lovely song, and I can really relate to the feelings in it - the longing to get a new life and find love etc and just run away into the night. It has a really expressive melody, and Neil sings it so well, with such feeling. It is well produced too, and really atmospheric. I never could understand the critics saying PSB are deadpan...

Pet Shop Boys – Your Funny Uncle Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the lyrics in this song are beautifully written.

A quote from Neil Tennant:
"The words are about one of my best friends who died of Aids. The same person who had the party in 'Being Boring'. He died in 1989, and this is a description of his funeral. All the details are time: the cars in slow formation, and so on. He did have an uncle, who had been in the army all of his life and suddenly found himself at the funeral of his evidently gay nephew who'd died of Aids. I think it must have been quite a difficult situation for him, but he was really nice and dignified and spoke to all of his nephew's friends. I had to give a reading, and the bit I read was from the book of Revelations, which started 'I, John, saw a new Jerusalem', and at the end it says there's somewhere where there's no pain or fear; and I found it a really moving piece of prose, and attached it to the end of the song."

Pet Shop Boys – Always Lyrics 16 years ago
This is such a beautiful song, I think it's one of their best and I can't believe they were going to include it on Release and didn't. I find it very soothing to listen to when I'm stressed out, both lyrically and musically. It's got such a gorgeous dreamy, gentle quality and Neil's voice sounds perfect. I think the lyrics are beautiful and quite self explanatory really.

Pet Shop Boys – Fugitive (Richard X Extended Mix) Lyrics 17 years ago
I can't believe no one's commented on this yet! There's been a bit of controversy around this song as it's rumoured to be about the Sept 11 terrorist attacks and written from the terrorists' point of view, due to all the plane sounds in the background.

If that's true, I actually think it's a very clever idea. I find it a sad and touching song that, typically of PSB, also really makes you want to dance, although the idea of dancing to it seems a bit weird.

The line I find sad is "I'm really gonna miss you," as it gives the impression that despite the terrible lengths these people are going to to be rewarded in heaven, there's still part of them that doesn't want to do it, because, just like their victims that they don't care about, they're going to lose their lives and miss each other.

It also gives the impression that, despite what they're doing, they aren't entirely sure what will happen, as it says "you're gonna take me with you" as well. I like the fact that this song forces me to empathise with people who do such terrible things.

The Boy Least Likely To – My Tiger My Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I always thought the tiger represented childhood as well. This is one of my favourite songs, it's so sweet, touching and sad. The Boy Least Likely To capture childhood thoughts and feelings so beautifully.

Robbie Williams – Rudebox Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think it's meant to be either a pisstake or deadly serious. It's bit of a joke but not a pisstake. I don't think he is trying to be cool or thinks of himself seriously as a rapper either, just listen to the lyrics, it's a light hearted song. At the same time, I don't think the idea is to take the piss out chavs/rappers. He has always been a big fan of hip hop, it was what he used to listen to as a teenager when he lived on an estate in Stoke. So I think he's basically just enjoying making the sort of music he used to listen to when he was younger with funny, daft lyrics. If he's taking the piss out of anyone, it's himself. I know he said that when he originally starting recording these rap songs, he was just mucking about. Good on him for going ahead and releasing them, instead of getting hung up about what's 'credible' as I think far too many artists do.

Robbie Williams – Baby Girl Window Lyrics 17 years ago
No, this song isn't about his unborn baby, that is the song 'Grace' on the album 'I've Been Expecting You' though I wouldn't have blamed anyone for thinking that. This song was written for the actor Richard Beckinsale, who died of a heart attack at the age of 31, leaving his young daughter (the actress Kate Beckinsale) behind, although she was 5 years old when he died. He also had an older daughter (Samantha Beckinsale). I think they may have been family friends of Robbie's or something but I'm not sure. I think it's a very touching song and is full of really lovely phrases eg."I see your face when flowers bloom." The baby girl can see her father in heaven through her window and he can see her. My username is from the first line (I know my name says 'caught your rainbows' instead of 'got' but it always sounded more like 'caught' to me.)

I disagree, it's great! Nice modern Christmas song with typical Robbie lyrics.

Robbie Williams – Tripping Lyrics 17 years ago
markjohnson880, the backing singers sing:

"want you to love me
want you to be
the heavens above me
eternally"

I really like this song, it's got so much in it. I love those backing lyrics and the harmony mixed with the sort of ska feel. The rap in the middle and the strings sound great too. I think it's a very interesting and quirky sort of song and I love the fact that he quotes Ghandi, why shouldn't he? The song sounds like it could be describing many things but to me it sounds like a someone advising someone else they know, maybe a friend or a relative, about not getting too involved with danger/the wrong crowd and then the other person's reaction ("when you think we're lost we're exploring" etc).

Pet Shop Boys – Being Boring Lyrics 17 years ago
Neil wrote this song partly in memory of his best friend, who died of AIDS in 1989 ("but I thought, in spite of dreams, you'd be sitting somewhere here with me.") I guess there is also a general sense of melancholy about all the lives that were lost in the gay community around that time due to AIDS as well, so I suppose you could say there is sort of a gay connection there but the song is really nothing to do with being gay. I think the main emphasis is the deeply nostalgic feelings of the narrator (Neil) has looking back on his life and at the way things have turned out now. Everything's changed now, everyone's new and his friend isn't there with him anymore. There's a real sense of loss but also relief at having got to where he is and happiness at having led such a fulfilled life. ("we were never being boring.") The music is just as beautiful as the lyrics, if not more. It's an incredibly beautiful song - possibly my favourite song ever.

Robbie Williams – Advertising Space Lyrics 17 years ago
Thanks so much everyone for explaining the different parts of this song in such detail - interesting and truly appreciated :) It's really shed light on some of the lines I wondered about.

And congratulations to WHEREANGELSPLAY on sucessfully being able to read Robbie's mind and tell us not only what Robbie's intentions actually are but also that he's obviously not capable of having any idols other than Oasis (who he kind of fell out with a long time ago...) Silly us, thinking he might have just had the simple intention of writing a much needed heartfelt and empathetic tribute to Elvis and acknowledgement what he went through in his life as a megastar...

Completely agree, one of my favourite songs of all time! Hilarious lyrics, very beautiful music. Wry, dreamy and very funny with perfect comic timing. "cos frankly you're a bore...and I'm not" always cracks me up.

Robbie Williams – Rudebox Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, I think it's fantastic! I don't know why people look down on music like this so much, it's catchy and fun with a fantastic bassline and wonderfully trivial/meaningless lyrics, it could only be Robbie. I'm not saying a lot of his lyrics are trivial/meaningless, I just think this can sometimes be a great quality in a song and when Robbie chooses to do this he is amazing at it. I also think with a rap like this, a lot of the charm comes from how the spoken words sound.

Robbie Williams – Karma Killer Lyrics 18 years ago
werumm, it's becoming steadily obvious that there's only one jumped up little git here and it's not Robbie...Don't you have anything better to do than lurk on the discussion page of an artist you appear to dislike and have very little knowledge of? I don't know where this opinion comes from that just because Robbie prefers to work with other people he obviously has no talent whatsoever. It seems quite the opposite to me. He has written songs alone and a good deal of music as well, I don't see what makes that so difficult to believe.

Right...anyway, I would agree this is a brilliantly evil song with some great lines and is really catchy. I think it was written about Nigel Martin Smith, not Take That.

Robbie Williams – Jesus In A Camper Van Lyrics 18 years ago
The lyrics of this always make me laugh even though I'm not sure what they all mean, I think it could be one of those Robbie songs where most of it's just a load of random words which I think can be just as great as something deep and meaningful. The thing is, you can never know if it really does mean anything or not or if there's a meaning in there that he doesn't even know about as I get the impression that the meaning often only becomes clear to him after he's written the lyrics rather than before.

Anyway, I think he did say that he got the idea for this song from a time when he was in rehab and he saw out the window some bloke that looked like Jesus getting out of a van, I think that's hilarious!

Robbie Williams – Cursed Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it was rumoured to be about Geri Halliwell, formerly of the Spice Girls. I think that rumour was brought about by the tabloids who always tried to insist the two of them were an item when they were only ever good friends and wouldn't leave them alone when they were on holiday together.

Anyway, according to Robbie this song isn't about her at all, it's about a friend who passed away. I love it because it's not your usual song about having lost someone. I think there are a lot of different emotions in here as well as sadness that are common after a bereavement but not so often expressed in songs such as anger and guilt. I think you also get to know some of what he felt about her and how he thought she compared to him. You can feel her character in this song and I think it may have been written to reflect that. I love the bits where it suddenly goes quieter - "hush, baby sleep now, we all love you, we always do." It's so beautiful, it's the quieter, calmer and more lasting underlying rememberence through the shock of it all - "we'll always love you and miss you."

Robbie Williams – One Fine Day Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a special song - really clever lyrics and it's exactly how I feel about a certain time in my life too. It's about times you could have had but didn't, quite sad. I love the line "don't rewrite my history cos you'll never really know how much you didn't mean to me" - genius, I know exactly what he means. In his book Feel, Robbie says he thought bits of this song were about how he felt about his parents divorcing. It also says that the song was based on a poem he had to learn at school and I think it must be the same poem I knew when I was younger. It goes like this:

One fine day in the middle of the night
Two dead men got up to fight
Back to back, they faced each other
Drew their swords and shot each other
