i simply find it hard to swallow that with eddie singing with all of this emotion, that there is no meaning to this song. i understand eddie uses his voice as an instrument, and he historically seems to intentionally distort the lyrical content of some songs. this can't be improvised lyrics originally, even though i think they are now, when performed live. i believe the studio recorded version has very much to it... referring to the yellow letters distributed to family of soldiers killed, the song takes the perspective of a fallen soldier. having died and becoming ghost-like, he sees his family, on their porch, having gathered because of the recent news of his death. they can't see him, in his current state, so of course they don't wave. he's going to report to to gates of heaven, and he's gonna get wasted on the way. contemplating whether his corpse has been left in the box or the bag, meaning a pine box or a body bag. it's disturbing, and he doesn't want to stay... |

| good call no code, with patience. it's too bad all of the emotion of a lost friend had to create this beautiful collaboration. since matt cameron drummed on this album and was soundgardens drummer, but has since joined the magnificent pearljam, temple of the dogs original line-up is current pearljam, plus chris cornell of course. eddie vedder sang on more than just this song on temple of the dogs self titled album. he contributed back up vocals on "pushin' forward back," "your savior," and "four walled world." | |
