Thrice – The Great Exchange Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is, most probably, a parable. The implications are obvious, and the meaning is stirring.

The story in the song goes: A sailor, on a ship at the "dawn of the world" (the time of the discovery of the "New World", as referenced by the title... "The Great Exchange" is what historians call the passing of slaves from Africa to the new world, resources and new foods back to Europe, and then some money and resources to Africa repeating the cycle... however, the title doesn't just set the scene historically, but provides a sort of pun on the meaning...)

The sailor and the rest of the crew mutinied against the captain and they sentenced him to die, to walk the plank, so to speak. The irony, of course, is that they sank after they mutinied against their captain... mutinies occur when crews are displeased with the captain's leadership or their progress, so to sink afterwords is a sort of foil.

In the ocean water, the narrator swims for his life, becomes exhausted, and succumbs, thinking he will drown...

And then his captain, clinging to wooden debris from the exploded ship, rescues him, most selfishly, by pulling is body across his support, giving up his own means of survival for the sailor who had helped to cause the entire predicament.

So, the song is a message on selfish sacrifice of the betrayed for his enemies, and, considering Dustin's faith, its no far stretch to assume who the song's meaning parallels.

I absolutely love this song! It's my favorite on this album, by far, and I really like the way he sings the lyrics; it makes the meaning more clear that way. For example, whenever I hear him say "We mutinied had sentenced our captain to die 'fore our sails", the way he sings it, sounds like "to die for our sins", and again, near the end, he says "Your body is a bridge across an endless sea", the way that he sings it it comes across as, to me, "your body is a bridge, a cross, an endless sea." If talking about Christ, the "bridge" is from one life to the next, the cross, well thats obvious, and an endless sea, which reminds me of the song "Open Water" from water, where he compares God to the seas... that part may be a stretch, but thats really the feeling that I get from that line.

Anyways, the other imagery in this song, like the captain making the supreme sacrifice upon a beam of wood, really cement in me that this song is less disputably about Christ than some other songs: the metaphor is obvious.

The great exchange is one life for another.

That's what this song means to me.

Nobody is claiming that it was inspired by Twilight. That is a horrible lapse of logic to assume that if both the book Twilight and the song Closer are about Vampires, then the song must be inspired by the book.

There were stories about vampires before Twilight, you know.

Wow. Where do I begin?
Apparently the concept that just because Dustin is a Christian but every song he writes DOES NOT HAVE TO BE CHRISTIAN is lost on many people. What a shame to be trapped in such shallow logic. Certainly, there are songs that Dustin uses metaphors of nature to represent the nature of his God (like Open Water for example), please try to keep in mind that Dustin has said that these sonnets are intentionally written from the P.O.V. of the respective element.

So Baner, I don't think he "pushes his beliefs" aside, but in this song he does, if by that you mean that he doesn't insert religious opinion and/or commentary on the nature of God.

And PLEASE, do not put words in my mouth! Really mature of you Baner to call somebody a "God hater" when they make a point that you contest. I don't hate God because you can't hate something that doesn't exist. Religion, on the other hand, I do detest for its inherent flaws, which, for the purposes of this argument, are innumerable...

It is good to see that reason and temperance remain possessed by (at least) a few, and so I thank you Rynych for defending me.

Alex-Alex, you are also worth thanking because you manage to get "it" while still retaining your religious position.

*Let the Christian hatred of me commence*

This song is NOT ABOUT GOD.
Its air speaking to mankind. Like somebody said earlier, just because the writer is a Christian doesnt mean that every damn thing he writes has to be about God.

Appreciate it for that.

"LiteracyScaresMe"

I very much believe in the existence of G-D. Just because I do not believe, however, that Man has any authority to write down His "name" in entirety let alone speak it aloud does not mean that I beleive I would "offend" anyone by upholding the tradition to not utter His "name" in vain. There are power behind words. For you to say that
"It's only a word unless you choose to add, or believe it has real meaning behind it"
is very simplistic. Words offer the means to meaning, they posses within them the very power to express and convey emotions, ideas, etc. Me refusing to write the "name" of G-D is merely an extension of my beliefs. I know it might not make sense to you, but really, when you think about it, there is no name for G-D. It was revealed that He is to be called The I AM, which in itself is not a name. G-D is not His name. He chooses not to reveal His true name to us, lest us mere lowly humans disgrace it by uttering it with our lips.

The Messenger = Christ

[I'll spare you all the chapter and versing that my predecessors have done and just use my thoughts and evidence as my arguement.]

The first half of the song, the speaker is fearful.
"Mark me with fear, I'm trembling
Send someone else instead
I know my world is ending
I can't repay my debt"
The speaker here is Man.
He feels his sin catching up with him.
All of the things he has done are too much for him,
and is filled with fear. He cannot face G-D.

"Can I carry such a heavy burden?
Can I move when I am paralyzed?
I see a fire behind a heavy curtain
I lean in closer and I close my eyes"
Man cannot bear the burden of his own sin,
the fire behind the curtain is G-D,
who is the Eternal Flame
[like when he appears to Moses]
but he cant be seen
[behind a heavy curtain]
So he prays
[I lean in closer and I close my eyes]

"Kiss the coals, breathe in smoke,
And I say, 'Here I am, send me.'
Lifts my soul, free and so unafraid
'Here I am, send me, send me.'
Free and so unafraid
'Here I am, send me.'
This part, I believe, is where the speaker changes.
The first half of the song was Man speaking;
the second half is Chirst.
He is willing to go to earth, willing to die for Man.
The coal and smoke is a metaphor for the dark state of the earth, filled with evil.

"Mark me with fire and
Send me among the living dead.
They cannot comprehend me;
I watch the sickness spread"
Here, Christ is asking His Father to send him to earth.
He is willing to save Man.
"Mark me with fire" is the star above Christ as He enters the world;
"The living dead" is Man. He is ignorant and still spritually unaware.
After a while, Christ realizes that "they," being humanity, did not and still have not comprehended Him, as we can see by the state of the world today.
"I watch the sickness spread" is Christ watching evil and sin, such as transgression and ignorance, still continue to devour the human race, for they still remain ignorant; they still uncomprehend Him.

"How can they hear me when their hearts are hardened?
How can they see me when they close their eyes?
Still they can tell that I'm an easy target;
a wooden saw is quite a way to die."
Here, Christ is remarking on humanity.
They cannot hear him; their hearts are hardened.
The cannot see him; their eyes are closed.
"Still they can tell that I'm an easy target"
As everybody knows, anybody who speaks out against injustice and intolerance but preaches only love and compassion will eventually be killed.
Because Christ also preached non-violence,
those opposed to Him know He's an "easy target" because he won't resist.
The wooden saw is the Cross.

Thrice – Firebreather Lyrics 16 years ago
This utterly brilliant song, with such powerful music, is completed only with its lyrics. The lyrics make this song. It is a call of awakening, trying to spread realization and emboldenment.

This song is about the tragedy that is playing out.
Specifically, it is about "politics,"
but more accurately, the rise of fascism in the place of freedomin America, and its current descent into darkness.

From the first time I heard this song, I took this meaning away.

He implores of us,
"tell me, are you free?"
He repeats this phrase again and again,
"tell me are you free?
In word or thought or deed?
tell me are you free?"

He mentions "Word," "Thought," and "Deed."
"Word" relates to the suppression of free speech and the stifling of dissent;
"Thought" here also refers to the stifling of dissent & the government's ability to sway opinion with lies;
"Deed" refers to our eventual inability to act, to rise up and take action.
(I see it as a three-parter: "Word" is what has happened, "Thought" is what is happening, and "Deed" is what is sure to happen)

I shouldnt have to remind of the acts of tyranny that our government is currently undertaking
(wiretapping, corruption, cronyism, lies, scandal, torture, secret prisons, media infiltration, crimes, misdemeanors. etc) as it is of fairly common knowledge by now. All these are common themes of all fascist states, which is chronicled in the study of fascism called "The 14 Characteristics of Fascim."
America shows all 14.
Look it up for yourself and decide.

So to me, it makes perfect sense when he says
Tell me are you free when the fear falls on you?
Here, it's about how fear corroded this country and allowed such injustices to be committed. Because fascism can only happen through the spread and use of fear. And in America, fear is used as a tool all the time.

The next part of the song asks:
"While the gallows stand,
and bullets lance the bravest lungs?
We fold our hands and
Hold our tongues."

This describes how the struggles abroad impact the U.S. at home.
"While the gallows stand", I believe, refers to the presence of punishment, and by that I mean the consequences of dissent and thinking differently.
"Bulletts lance the bravest lungs" refers to our brave soldiers being killed in an unneccessary, distracting war in Iraq. The bravest among us, who die in the throws of valor, die unneccessarily. And yet,
"we fold our hands and hold our tongues,"
meaning that look the other way,
we refrain from putting an end to it,
and, fearful of what may happen,
we stay quiet.

Finally, he asks himself
"Will I fold my hands,
and hold my tongue?
Or let the flames lick at my feet,
And breathe in fire and know I’m free?"
Here he has had enough.
He cannot remain silent--even if it costs him his life.
He returns to the mantra:
"Give me liberty or give me death;"
and he throughs in the metaphor of being burnt at the stake.
He will accept his execution,
for he would gladly give up all this tyranny and oppression to be free: To breathe in fire and know he's free.

Also, to add to the story about the band's encounter with Syd at the recording studio, he was not only bald(or rather, shaved), but he DIDN'T HAVE EYEBROWS either! So, as any Pink Floyd fan will now realize, although it was already established that "The Wall" was also about Syd, the main character in the movie adaptation was Syd (again, nothing new), but this would explain the scene in which the charcter of "PINK" shaves ALL of the hair on his body, including his eyebrows. I thought that it was an interesting way to tie several concepts together, but what else can one expect from such a great band?

When he says "only this one holy medium brings me piece of mind" i think he means that the act that he is performing is, to him, an art form. Mediums, like a guitar or a blank painting canvas, are used by an artist to make them convey fealings, thoughts and ideas. Its expressionism.
But, as to who/what is the medium, I can only speculate. Might be the act of his rape, or the feeling he gets from it. After he does it he feels whole, if not temporarily.

i'm not saying that maynard's "become one of us", as you say, I'm saying that he's sort of reconciled his beliefs with those of his mother, and not those of dogmatic hypocrites. And by the way, I hate the idea that only (and all) christians go to heaven, especially when coming from one. That idea is so distorted and un-christian in nature that im surprised that so many "christians" actually believe it. I'm against them, as are you, and as is everyone.

This song sort of doesn't settle with the song After Forever, but i think you can make sense of it after a while.
"I dont need a Jesus freak to tell me what its all about" Hes kinda sayin
"you dont have to tell me whats going on, ive already figured it out"

From then on he says
"I don't want no preacher telling me about the God in the sky"
To me its like he believes, but in his own, personal way. And lastly, when he says, "I dont want anyone to tell me where I'm gonna go when I die ... i dont want people telling me what to do"
i think hes just sayin "chill out dude, you dont determine or even have an idea of where im gonna go, only God does."

P.S. I also agree with Ryan M. about the weeds. I see a lot of my fellow "christians" (priests, popes, televangelists) 'hide thier faces' and pretend to be flower but they are a weed. Best quote i heard about this was by Shakespeare. It went somethin like:

"And I've clothed my naked villainy with loose odd ends claimed forth by holy writ (right), and while most I claim to be a Saint, I truly play the Devil"

-collegeguy,
you really need to re-examine some things. what i have bassically stated was that maynard has, in a sense, reconciled his and his mothers beliefs, but i guess that gives you an excuse to start ranting and drawing such rash generalizations about ''us christians" that have not been founded on some version of truth or reality. Oh, and at what point did i say that only christians can be saved in my argument? You shouldnt be out there looking for a way to persue your personal vendetta against christians. Feel what you will, just dont go out there and make blind accusations on all of christianity by using my argument as a point of reference, which hase nothing to do with anything in your incoherent rambling.

and to ckywierd,
WOW. what a terrible conclusion that you have come to. im truly sorry that you need to pull your head out so badly, but you better hurry- i think the lack of air in your rectum is causing you to radiate statements that dont come close to a thought or observation.

A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics 17 years ago
I have a couple of interpretations, but to the best of my knowledge, one of them is original.(im only throwing this out there)
Could it be that this is Satan tempting/deciving someone of faith, particularly someone who is either: overcome a devastation, or is in the proccess of overcoming. I cite particularly the use of the term "you never taste of the fruit", a reference to the forbiddan fruit, which Satan used to tempt Eve in the garden of eden, and in this case represents sin. (Drugs, sex, theft, what have you)
It also involves Satan, for lack of a better word, 'consoling' someone whom he tempted and convinced to sin, and now he's kinda saying, "Oh, its not that bad. Why are you so troubled? I mean 'its not like you killed someone. Its not like you drove a hateful/spiteful spear into His side'."("His" side being that of Christ, as He was pierced by the spear of Longenous at the crucifixtion)
Ultimatley, its Beelzebub seeking whom he may devour.

Why do you find it odd that I listen to a band that promotes open-mindedness, compassion, and the elimination of the ego? See, we can agree! The Believer and the Athiest both have a sense of right and wrong, both have morals and freewill, an ability to think and understand -- all of those senses were was given to all of us by God, whether or not you choose to believe in Him is up to you. Remember, God dosn't make you worship Him, He lets you if you CHOOSE to. See, you have a right to believe that you are a god if you want to (i personally think that God dwells within the hearts of those who invite Him there) God, however, isnt vain, He does not need us, but rather, we need Him. Again, if you dont want to worship Him, no one is making you and nobody should desire to make you. Just keep in mind that, although you may not believe in Him, He does believe in you.

I think its true that God is Love, that if we love one another we fullfill what Christ called the Greatest Commandment, which is to love thy neighbor as you love yourself. To think, if man could only live by that, even those who dont believe in God, we would have something close to a perfect world.

With that, i just want to end with a nice little quote:
"For those who believe, no explanation is neccessary;
For those who do not, none will suffice"

Tool – Jambi Lyrics 18 years ago
Of course i do, but that isnt reason itself to stop believing. I agree that beliefs are dangerous, but not all of them are. Remeber that movie Dogma? Well i think that Chris Rock said it right, that "beliefs are dangerous, and its hard to change a belief, you shouldnt have beliefs, but rather IDEAS" And, no, I dont need the threat of Hell to "scare" me or the reward of Heaven for me to live right, i do it for it is commanded and expected of me. Christ said "If you love me, you will obey my commandments"
I dont know about you, or if you even believe in God, but i do and the God i believe in dosnt "advocate the enslavement of your enemies"
How can you say that? Have you never heard
"It has been said 'hate your enemeis and love your friends', but I tell you, LOVE your enemies and pray for those who persecute you"?
Now, I am a devout Christian, but I dont go to Church every Sunday, and I can tell you why- The church that i would go to was full of the types of hypocritical congregants that Christ preached so fervantly against. I left that Church and, rather than abandon my own faith, i sought a more personal relationship with God, because afterall Christianity was never meant to be a religion, but a relationship with Christ. I TOTALLY agree that a large part of organized religion is, for lack of a better word, flawed. Again, i will use a movie as an example, Stigmata made an excellent point (if you havent seen it, do so) it talks of a gospel that was written by Christ himself (i think that the movie was based at least partially on the gospel of St. Thomas, that isnt in the bible because the catholic church deemed it as "heresy" due to its view of the church, or rather, the lack of one) in this gospel, it talks of how the kingdom of God is inside you, and all around you, and that a church is merely wood and stone. This basically agrees with what is in the New Testament, but anyway, my point is, you dont need a church to love and serve God, you dont need a man in a collar to tell you that your sins are forgiven, as only God can do that, and you don't need any man to serve as the "middleman" between you and God. No one should be forced to believe, and no one should exploit those who do. I think that we can all agree on this.

Remember, we are all still brothers to each other and we should all play our part to make it better, regardless of faith.

No, I dont think that i have missed the Point. I call those who control others through a religion for what they are: evil. I KNOW that there are many different religions being referenced in Tool's music, and thats great, because in order to understand yourself better, it helps to look through someone else's eyes.
Now, for you to say that disgustipated is an odd name for someone who is a Believer, well, i just don't agree. That song is about people who are insane, using the cover of a pulpit to preach thier perverted and dogmatic ways-ways that have nothing to do with a religion but are connected to it because those crazies do so by taking God's name in vain- for personal gain. What comes to mind(and its a little off topic, lol) is that one episode of South Park where Cartmen pretends to be a preacher to get money. And there are plenty of real people out there like that. Come on, who hasnt seen that one "preacher" on t.v. with his "miracle spring water" that will cure you because "God told him to sell it to you" That is horrible, and I am, as well as a majority of Christians, againt fools like that, and its true that it is people like that who cause others to turn away. But please, I ask you, look beyond that, and you will see the Light. Just look at the Middle East right now-people are twisting and perverting a loving and peaceful religion and killing many innocent people in the name of thier beliefs, and even in the name of God. But only a minority of Muslims use a loving religion to kill- my point is, do you honestly believe that this is the will and work of God? NO, it is MAN who does evil, and unfortunatly, some of the most horrific things have been done in the name of religion and in the name of beliefs. But on the other hand, religion has also done some of the greatest things for mankind, so you cant say that religion and beliefs are what is responsible for evil, because the most dangerous belief, the most sinister idea is the lack of one. Ignorance fuels the fire of hate. Hitler, for example, was completly against Christianity, and look what he did. He was brought up to be Christian, but at a young age, something horible happened and he turned against it, he turned to the dark side of himself. Its well known that Hitler, and Stalin too, were both huge narcissists, and even Megolamanics. Hitler saw himself as the father(of germany, and all of mankind, for that matter), he controlled people's minds, and was the closest thing to the devil incarnate-but remember, he shared the idea that beliefs were dangerous. Look, all im trying to say is for you to look past all of the darkness, all of the hypocracy, and all of the other evils, and maybe, just maybe, you will find that all of religion is not bad, that people are still good at heart, and that fullfillment can be found, you just needonly to look up...
We all have a third eye, and i can say that mine is open, and it was opened by the Light

Wow, I really appreciate all of you people responding with such dilligence! However, let me get a few things straight:

First of all, I never said definitely that MJK had changed his ways, rather that there was a somewhat overwhelming evidence that he has done so. I have to say i might not be right, but i could be.
Now, you must admit, even if you dont think that Maynard has changed his ways, he at least questions them now.

"Also note in Judith he says (inspiration for the ways that I will never choose to be), note that he says NEVER choose to be."

Is it even POSSIBLE that he can change? Its easy to think that he does in fact mean never, but this song was written several years ago, before the death of his mother, and before he had time to think it all out.

I am a Christian myself, and the one thing i hate most of all are those pious hypocrites and "ignorant flippants" of the church, probably even more than those who arent one. Maynard described it accuretly as the collective Judas, for the ones who betray Christ are the ones who say that the love Him while they dont show love to thier fellow man, they judge while they shouldnt, and who are ever the hypocrite. Look, Jesus Himself was mostly about how hypocrites like those cause people to turn away from God, so what i think is one of Gods major complaints is how those who claim to be followers of Him neglect His word to the point that they cause others to turn away from God for what has been done unto them.

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"
I try to live by that and it reminds me that, sadly, there are people who claim to follow the path of love, compassion, and forgiveness, but are the first to pont the finger, the first to pick up a stone.
Maynard has, and I mean this as the most respectable of complaments, more faith than many believers because of how he preaches the love of one's fellow man, because he underlines basically the teahings of Jesus, that to love your fellow men and serve them is to serve Him. I agree with danger TH14 that you dont have to follow a religion to be a great person and a respectable, decent human being."how you treat the least of you is how you serve Me" Overall, i think that if Maynard isnt a Christian, his messages are.

You are very welcome! I thought it was very annoying to see that the lyrics were off THAT much.

Here's something else: Maynard James Keenan has written other songs about his mother, Judith Marie Keenan. 27 years ago, she had a stroke and, tragically, was left paralyzed. MJK wrote the Perfect Circle song "Judith" about his mother. (Notice its her name) In this song he, much to both my shock and dismay, curses our Lord and blames Him for her tragedy. Here is the song "Judith":

"You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I'll never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How the savior has abandoned you
F*** your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

Oh so many many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you
Pray to your Christ, to your God
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break
Never---choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who did this to you
You never thought to question why

Not like you killed someone
It's Not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ
As if he knows the reasons why
He did it all for you
Did it all for you
He did it all for you"

He says that she was an "inspiration for the ways that I will never choose to be" and that she was"abandoned" by the Savior. Maynard had lost his faith when his mother suffered her stroke and she became paralyzed, 27 years ago.

This brings me to my next point, which is like an epiphamy(i think thats spelt right)The latest Tool album, 10,000 Days, shows evidence that MJK has changed his ways(please, just look at the other song lyrics)Jambi, Wings For Marie, and yes, 10,000 Days talk about his mother, and her return to the Savior. He even says in 10,000 Days:

"Fetch me the Spirit, the Son, and the Father
Tell them thier pillar of Faith has ascended"

Now, it gets wierd. Judith Marie, his mother was paralyzed for 27 years... or 10,000 days.

This sheds a new light on the song

"Light our way
Shine on forever
Shine on benevolent Son
Shine down upon the broken
Shine until the two become one
Shine on forever
Shine on benevolent Son
Shine down upon the severed
Shine until the two become one
Benevolent Son"

Surely he means Christ, as the word Son is, indeed, not sun and it is capitalized. He calls Him the Light that guides our path, and the Good Book says that Christ is the Light of the world.(Light is also capitalized)

Maynard James keenan, however, has come out against Christianity in the past, and even admitted to being a ritual magician. But, its true that he was brought up as a Christian and that his mother was one, a very devout one. It seems that he has dedicated an entire album to her and her suffering, as mostly every song is about Judith Marie, his mother.

It seems that because of her death, he has "given up" the Magik and realized it as evil, hence the line

"The devil and his had me down
In love with the dark side I'd found.
Dabblin' all the way down
Up to my neck soon to drown."

He then goes on to say that the Light (Jesus) led him up and turned him around. There are more examples on the album, and i will continue to post them

P.S.
For anyone who has noticed the recurring theme of 11's in Tool's music, chew on this
Jesus Christ has 11 letters. :)

the lyrics posted here are not correct.
they TRULY are:

"Hear from the king's mountain view
Here from the wild dream come true
Feast like a sultan I do
On treasures and flesh, never few. "

and

"The devil and his had me down
In love with the dark side I'd found.
Dabblin' all the way down
Up to my neck soon to drown."

(whoever posted this got these next parts VERY wrong)

"Prayed like a martyr dusk til dawn
Begged like a hooker all night long
Tempted the devil with my song
And got what I wanted all along

No cross you could hold
Sway or justify my giving away
my center
So if I could I'd wish it all away
If I thought tomorrow would take you away
You're my peace of mind, my home, my center
I'm just trying to hold on
One more day
Dim my eyes
Dim my eyes
Dim my eyes if they should
Compromise our fulcrum
Want and need divide me
Then I might as well be gone
Shine on forever
Shine on benevolent Son
Shine down upon the broken
Shine until the two become one
Shine on forever
Shine on benevolent Son
Shine down upon the severed
Shine until the two become one
Divided I'm withering away
Divided I'm withering away
Shine on upon the many
Light our way
Benevolent Son
Breathe in union
Breathe in union
Breathe in union
Breathe in union
Breathe in union
So as one survive
Another day and season
Silence leech, and save your poison.
Silence leech, and stay out of my way."
