This is one of the most beautiful songs Ween has ever done.. Should have been on the country album imo. Such a great tearjerking tribute to a legend

Death Cab for Cutie – Wait (Secret Stars cover) Lyrics 7 years ago
To me, it's not necessarily about any relationship or lost love, but I get a socially awkward vibe off of the main character of the song. I relate to certain lines here a lot and they really resonated with me. I feel like the song is about a person who doesn't go out all that much and someone who doesn't relate to the average person very much. He feels like most people are just trying to act cool and show off rather than strive for more meaningful friendships/relationships with people.

He is a guy that is introverted and doesn't go out much but he's trying to fit in with how other people socialize: going to diners, talking casually about nothing over coffee, no real meaningful conversations going on to the point where the main character of the song feels no connection and doesn't want to feel any connection. When you don't feel a connection with most people and stay with yourself a lot, you are cynical and never expect to really hit it off with anyone and you expect people not to really say anything that interests you. Such is the life of a socially awkward introverted person.

I really like the last 2 lines: "Sometimes we all feel stupid, we say the wrong things. You're not the only one.
Sometimes we all get left behind in a race of style, it's a dumb thing."

I find the first line pretty comforting for someone who might be awkward and doesn't know what to say to people they don't know well. The 2nd line is just a repeat of the earlier subject of the average person just trying to one-up each other on who is more "cool" and "stylish" rather than forming any genuine chemistries with each other.

To me it's a nice philosophical way of lamenting how most people don't really have all that great social skills and they're all out for themselves. I am really surprised no one else came up with this interpretation because to me it was never about any particular failed relationship or love of a person or anything. It's just a general observation of the average person through the eyes of an introverted, perhaps even reclusive, person.

Avey Tare – Lucky 1 Lyrics 8 years ago
Such a beautiful song that is overlooked here apparently. I get the feeling the song is about coming out of a long and torturous bout of horrible, crippling depression, but coming out of it feeling better and lucky to be alive. It's a powerful song, much like some of the others on the rest of the album.

Daniel Johnston – Pow Lyrics 8 years ago
I can't believe how underrated this one is. These lyrics flow so well and are so well written. Couldn't tell you what was in Daniel's mind when he wrote 'em but they're some of the most poetic and thoughtful lyrics he's written IMO. The music and melody are also pretty powerful This is one of my favorite Daniel Johnston tunes and has been for many years.

Nirvana – Endless, Nameless Lyrics 9 years ago
@[livedreamincolor:4089] Totally agree on what you said on your first paragraph. I thought the same exact thing in regards to "Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip", the other improvised song they did. Tons of hidden meaning in that one too. People underestimate Nirvana's lyrics sometimes. I hear some criticism how their songs don't make any sense but that's really selling them way too short.

of Montreal – Alter Eagle Lyrics 10 years ago
Sounds to me "eagle shaped mirror" is a part of this parody of a typical alpha male type. Or at least someone who is very full of themselves. I am tipped off of that by the little diatribe about "neon prescription sunglasses" which sounds very sarcastic to me.

of Montreal – Malefic Dowery Lyrics 10 years ago
Some of the most amazing wordplay I've heard..

"Now I live in fear of your schizophrenic genius
It's a tempestuous despot
That I can't seem to propitiate"

The Smashing Pumpkins – Whir Lyrics 10 years ago
Pisces Iscariot brings back a lot of memories as a teen in the mid 90s. I loved this album as much as their more "proper" albums. This song in particular makes me most nostalgic and brings me back some good memories, although ironically its about worrying and anxiety. Never really knew what it meant back then, but being older now, it really hits home. Beautiful song all around and one of my favorites.

Yeah I totally agree. There's a lot of emotion in that first verse.. and the delivery is perfect. Awesome melody too.

of Montreal – Flunkt Sass vs. the Root Plume Lyrics 10 years ago
These are some amazingly cool sounding/flowing lyrics. Judging by the first verse, it could be about some sort of psychedelic drug trip (or just pot). "don't make me process, this much information"

I'm surprised no one has said anything. This EP is pretty incredible. Holiday Call and this song are my favorites.

Animal Collective – Untitled Lyrics 11 years ago
Someone once compared this song to someone who has just come home to find their whole family brutally murdered and the feedback is someone screaming in terror. Certainly a terrifying way to describe it. I find it both horrifying and beautiful as fuck at the same time, which isn't something I can say about many songs. I absolutely love it.

The Beach Boys – In The Back Of My Mind Lyrics 13 years ago
Why has no one commented on this beautiful song? This is one of my personal favorites, and unfortunately not a very well known one. It is very heartfelt and the lyrics are some of the most touching and meaningful to my own life that I've ever heard (and "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times"). I believe it to be completely about uncertainty about the future and outcome of life and not wanting the good things in your life/happiness to go away; mainly not wanting to lose someone you love and things changing for the worst. There's a lot of soul searching and it's just some of the most honest lyrics I've ever heard.

One of my favorite Ween songs. Conventional by their standards and not as unique as their best stuff, but this is simply one of the best love songs ever done.

Ween – Birthday Boy Lyrics 13 years ago
This is such a gorgeous heart-wrenching song.. Probably one of the most affecting songs I've ever heard. Pretty impressive for just a distorted guitar and voice, but that's the power of Ween and Gener's awesome vocals. What I wonder is if this really was as personal as it sounds.. I could never figure out if the intro ("Paiiinn") was sarcastic or not. Really sounds directly from the heart and it kills me every time.

Radiohead – Faust Arp Lyrics 13 years ago
I love this song so much, and I think it's the best song on In Rainbows. A lot of people won't agree with me, but it's one of their most beautiful songs; so quaint but so meaningful and the strings are old fashioned and very classy, yet dark.

From the moment I first heard this song I always thought it sounded like it was straight off the White Album. I think if both Lennon & Mccartney actually collaborated on a song during 1968, this is what would come out.

Counting Crows – Time and Time Again Lyrics 13 years ago
Definitely about the sadness, loneliness and utter pain of someone you love so much abandoning you. He's feeling helpless, incredible sadness ("i wanna sink slowly without getting wet" - He doesn't want to feel anything at all.. almost a suicide plea) and anger/resentment of everything in the world ("I wanna set fire to the city"), as well as a wish to escape everything, escape his life and his loneliness. Some of the most clever, well-written lyrics ever sung to a very emotional song.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Was Once a Loyal Lover Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's less straightforward than people think. There's some cliche' themes about growing old and regretting the past in life, but it is very well written and descriptive for that type of thing. The song is really catchy too; what I want to know is why wasn't this on Narrow Stairs?

They Might Be Giants – The House at the Top of the Tree Lyrics 14 years ago
Such a beautiful song and one of their best songs on their kids albums. The lyrics are so much fun yet are far away from being silly nonsense, yet Linnell gives a great heartfelt vocal for singing lyrics that are like this.

Jimmy Eat World – My Sundown Lyrics 18 years ago
I relate very much to this song. Other people have similarly explained an interpretation that was pretty close to my own.

In a nutshell, I see it to be about someone whom isn't very happy with his life. He knows he could be happier, he knows he could have more friends, he knows he can achieve more as a person, and be looked at as a respectable person, a successful person. It seems like he's finally gained the motivation and confidence to finally look forward to a more positive future, to improve everything about himself and the way he lived.

The line "with one hand high" could in actuality be "with one HEAD high" instead, which would probably make more sense, which signifies keeping his head up and not letting go of his goal. However, he doesn't think anyone will care about his will to improve his life, since perhaps no one really cares about him in the first place. Or maybe he thinks no one cares, or that no one cares quite enough. Or it could be positive, and mean that no one cares that he's taking his time and trying his best to reach his goal. I prefer to think that it's the former, since like i've said, i relate to the song in feeling like no one really cares, no matter how much is done to reach progress.

I think that the "show me the way from crazy" line seems to convey that this person feels that maybe he is not "normal", that is he is not like everyone else, and perhaps his life seems a little crazier than the average person. He feels that with a little help from someone, maybe he could feel "normal", and get away from feeling like he is crazy, or abnormal, because the way he lives is perhaps not the way people his age, or the people he feels he'd fit in with would. Perhaps he doesn't have many, if any, friends, spends a lot of time alone, doesn't do much with his life...etc, but he feels like he should, and that perhaps he is wasting his life when he could be living a much better, much more "normal", less depressing life.

The "band who goes from rags to riches but is called a sellout in the end" theory is plausable as well, and it could possibly be about that, but i prefer to think of the song this way, as i relate to it more in my own life.

I also must say i love the chorus, and the "and no one cares" line, as I don't really see (or notice) that whole sentiment as direct as it is in this song. Sometimes you feel so insecure that you need a little help and support in someone, but it's so heartbreaking to think you'll never get any because no one really cares. They're too into their own life. Or maybe they don't know you're feeling this way, or that you have any problem at all. There's many ways of perceiving it. Needless to say, I love this song and it's one of the best Jimmy Eat World ever released. It's quite a beautiful song.
