The Kinks – Animal Farm Lyrics
|
Even if it shares the same name as Orwell's novel, it seems to have no connection. If anything, the meaning is completely opposite. Orwell's novel uses the idea of animals on a farm rebelling as an allegory for the Bolshevik revolution. This song is about a human leading a happy, care-free life on a farm. And instead of rebelling, the animals are "playing" on this farm. |

"Drown an unsung man?" I don't think Meher Baba would care for that kind of sacrafice. |

The Who – 905 Lyrics

This song reminds me of Brave New World. 905 was going to be part of a rock opera that John Entwistle never finished writing. |

I think this instrument represents an acid trip after a visit by the Acid Queen. But the theory that it represents passing time works as well. |

The Who – Old Red Wine Lyrics
|
"There's a Bowl and a Fillmore, the Cow and the Greek"
These are references to concert venues in California. The Fillmore is in San Francisco and the Cow is short for the Cow Palace, which is just south of the city of San Francisco. The Cow Palace was the location for the infamous incident of Keith Moon passing out on stage.
The Bowl could mean the Hollywood Bowl? Not sure. And the Greek is probably the Greek Theatre, either in Berkeley or LA. |

Nice little song off of The Who Sell Out. I don't know what "pass me plough" means though...seems like a throw-away line. |

The Who – Success Story Lyrics
|
"Fairy maanger" is a dig at The Who's homosexual manager, Kit Lambert. This Entwistle tune rocks harder than the others on The Who By Numbers but the sarcastic take on success fits in well with the other themes. |
