Sparklehorse – Gold Day Lyrics 13 years ago
I want this song played at my funeral. I think that "good morning" are words of farewell as we are about to enter another phase of life.

I think that by saying "may all your days be gold, my child" the song is telling us to remember each and every day of our lives as something beautiful by using our happy memories (silver piles of smiles, which happens to be my favorite phrase) to avoid focusing on any pain or suffering (the crows and wolves) in our lives.

This song makes death feel so peaceful-- we don't die; we evaporate. I love the image of drowning clocks, like everything in this world just disappears into the depths of whatever.

I never know whether to smile or cry when I listen to this. Usually, it is both.

Oberhofer – o0Oo0Oo Lyrics 14 years ago
My take:

The speaker is going to hook up with this girl even though he doesn't share her feelings of romance. In the first stanza I think that confessing his true motives would be humbling since hers are much nobler. The second stanza is about romanticizing the circumstances, making something natural, innocent, and new grow out of trash (I imagine that this girl is drinking Natty light since bitch beer doesn't usually come in cans). In the fourth stanza he knows that what he is doing is wrong, but the male ego triumphs over morality once again and he flattery rules his judgement. In the fifth stanza I take the death as a figurative one, that this girl won't be able to expect so much for long. Everyone is at least a little jaded by the time thirty rolls around. Just like bbcman, I also think the last stanza is a Garden of Eden reference (I mean, "garden snake"). The speaker is just like the tempting snake, there to trick his victim for his own sinister purpose only to slither away.

I love how the speaker of the song is pretty much an asshole, but the music sounds so sweet. I am a sucker for nonsense words or sounds as a chorus. Even after listening to the song on repeat and looking at the lyrics with a bit of a man-hating, uptight bitch view, I would still sleep with him.

I love the opening lines of this song... things really do seem to stop when you aren't in the right place in your life. Coming home puts you in motion...

Geez. This song is just amazing.

Eminem – Kim Lyrics 17 years ago
In response to hip hop being about songwriting...

The word "song" implies that there is music involved. Most rap "artists" don't write music. They write lyrics and put them over someone else's music. They are lyricists, not song writers. It isn't always a bad thing, but I don't consider rappers songwriters.

I think it is sad that music has become so lyric-centered. I guess that is what this site is all about, but it would be nice to see someone put some effort into the music behind the lyrics.

Wow. I'm not really sure what this means, but my gut tells me that it is about that subtle connection you feel with the "supernatural" sometimes. Beautiful song.

The Mountain Goats – Woke Up New Lyrics 18 years ago
This is the best "breakup song" out there. For lack of a better word, the lyrics are realistic. He doesn't romanticize anything.

It is a sad song, but it is still hopeful, since he is waiting for "the future to arrive" after he gets used to being alone.

He has the ability to capture exact emotions. His lyrics aren't generalized or vague like most others. In this song the speaker isn't simply lonely. He is lost, confused and afraid. The speakers freedom comes with a price-- that awful moment when you aren't sure what comes next.

John Darnielle writes words that are so simple but they are so effective. His imagery is so vivid I feel like I am experiencing everything he sings about. I love the part about making coffee-- it captures the difficulty of adapting to being alone again perfectly. Even though he felt "free," he really isn't since the "you" in the song still influences his habits and decisions.

I get goose bumps when he sings "what do I do?" It is almost like he is whispering as his voice goes higher. It is beautiful.

Okkervil River – For Real Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song. They use dynamics so well. The song reminds me of a storm. It's steady, but sometimes it becomes more violent and more intense.

As for the lyrics, I think it is about accepting the end of something. There is all of this suicidal imagery (the blood, the guns, the darkness, the blinds closing, driving into a lake) but he doesn't want to stop it, he just acknowledges it and encourages whomever he is speaking to to do the same.

I want this played at my wedding.

This is the best love song in the entire world. It is one of the few sincere and real love songs in the world. It's sappy and wonderful but it still manages to be realistic.

If anyone ever sang this to me, I would marry them on the spot.

Iron & Wine – Southern Anthem Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song. I love his use of parallel structure in his songs: he repeats the same words (Jesus, Freedom) to contrasts different situations. Poetically, this song is a masterpiece. Of course, it is musically a masterpiece as well. I absoluitely love it.

I'm originally from the southern part of Virginia and my grandparents live deep in Georgia, but I moved 'up North' last year. I think this song describes the South perfectly. I don't really have an accent, I don't own a Confederate flag, my family ackowledges that the Civil War is over, and I don't hate those 'damned Yankees."

However, "when that Southern anthem rings" a sense of pride and peace runs through me. There is just something about going back home to the South. Life really is more slow-paced down there and everyone is in love with their home. We may not have the big cities or the intellectual and cultural reputations that the North has, but it doesn't matter. I don't care if people call me a hick, I'm in love with the low mountains, the iced tea on the front porch, the barbeques on the church lawn and just the simplicity of the south.

I kind of got off topic, but I think that song is really talking about Southern pride-- not racist Southern Pride or the over-commercialized redknecks of country music-- but of the South's tenacity. The South has always refused to change not because it is ignorant, stupid, or afraid. It has refused to change because (most of the time) it hasn't needed to.

The South clings to the past; it "ran to the comfort of wine when they make the new milk turn." The religious traditions of the South remain despite other trends in society (Jesus "let your mother's Bible burn"). The South "suffered" through the "fever" of freedom when it went through the Civil War and the North came during Reconstruction and "drank from [the South's] cup." The river can "baptize" because it is "frozen" in time and tradition. The South is the horse that "died standing up" because it never really died after the Civil War and after the beginning of the 'modern age.'

The second verse is a little harder to interpret. I think it is about modernity versus the South. The South has lost some of its "guns" due to technology (we can "cut the clotheslines loose" because we have washing machines and dryers). Relgion has left the South a little bit, and what is left is usually fake and not really traditional or Southern at all (those radicals like Jerry Falwell have "stolen" Jesus and have exploited Southern religion). Freedom has "withered dry" because the 'Gone With the Wind' mentality is a little more subdued now. There is not as much resentment towards the North anymore. However, that pride still exists and has never changed, hence it is "still a baby." The South is "frozen" and "refuse[s] to die." The world may change, but that feeling you get when you are iin the South never will. This may be a stretch, but I think that the "guitar [is rising] again" because of the importance the South places on keeping the tradition alive. My grandparents have made sure that I am familiar with my lineage, that I know all of the old family stories and that I am proud of heritage. If I have kids, I will do the same, because I can "buckle to the sound" of the South and tradition will help me "lay my burdens down."

I did not mean for that to be this long.

TLC – Waterfalls Lyrics 18 years ago
This was the first pop song I ever remember liking. To me, it basically tells you not to rush life. So many people are in a rush to grow up and become incapable of making the right decision. Bascially I think it say to avoid getting into situations you aren't ready to handle.

Whenever I hear this song I feel like a little kid again. I'm not really an R&B or rap person, but I love TLC. They are real, unlike a lot of other things.

Whoever compared them to Destiny's Child was ridiculous.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is mostly about the loss of innocence. (Sorry if someone has already posted this, I read most but not all of the posts so far.)

When you are little, your faith in God is absolute-- you haven't had a reason to doubt yet. This song is about a lot of "firsts." The speaker is exposed to death for the first time, it is the first time the speaker has a reason to doubt religion or feel angry towards God, the first time the speaker experiences the complex emotions associated with love.

Personally, I think this song is about God forcing you to grow up. It is tough, but eventually it is a good thing. I think the speaker's doubt and anger strengthens his relationship with God-- he is able to realize just how complex God is, which isn't a bad thing.

I could be completely wrong. Acutally, I probably am.

Anyway, it is a wonderful song. I stop whatever I am doing whenever I hear it.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 18 years ago
Personally, I am not a big Geen Day fan. There is nothing special about them. They aren't talented musicians-- some kid who has been playing a $60 guitar for two weeks can play most of their repotoire. I think that they are overrated, but I also think is is incredibly stupid not to like them because other people do, rocker13. Not liking something just because other people do is just as bad, if not worse, as not liking something just because other people do.

Anyway, this song is obviously about the state of America and how no one evaluates anything by themselves-- they just accept whatever the media says. I think it is good that Green Day is writing something kind of meaningful, but the song doesn't really say that much. It is the same verse over and over again with a few different words. That's okay though-- music doesn't always have to be deep. If it's deep all the time the listener might drown. Anyway, I hate the song. The lyrics aren't too bad though. They aren't that originial, but they are a lot more meaningful than "oh my goodness, you broke up with me and now I feel awful."

I love On the Road. Kerouac was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title of this song as well.

I think it is about leaving Lowell behind, just as Kerouac did. It's all about leaving the norm behind in favor of something different.

John Denver – Take Me Home, Country Roads Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't know if this is true, but I heard that John and the others who wrote this song had never actually been to West Virginia.

Anyway, I love this song. I grew up near the Blue Ridge Mountaints and I haven't found anything more beautiful. There is nothing quite like that peaceful, blue haze.

West Virginia and Appalachia is like a world of its own-- life really is old there. I love it. This song really makes me want to go home.

Gregory and the Hawk – Boats and Birds Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about letting someone go because there is something better out their for them. In my opinion it is saying (much more poetically) "I'm here for you and I'm willing to do anything for you or be anything for you, but if you need to find something better I understand. But don't you dare let me forget you."

Ben Kweller – Believer Lyrics 18 years ago
I think if someone sang this to me I would cry and never stop. It is so beautiful.

The words seem really corny and stupid until you hear them.

I love this song. I agree with lala that it doesn't necessarily have to be a romantic relationship-- I know I feel this way about some friends I haven't dated.

"You speak to me without speaking
You touch so I can feel
With your strength I am stronger, at least I know I'm real"

That is my favorite part. There is nothing worse than feeling like you don't exist-- emptiness is often much worse than pain. However, there is nothing better than having someone remind you that you are alive.

This song is so happy sometimes it makes me mad. But I still love it.

"Your mother worries but no one worries quite like you."

^ I love that line.

What a great message-- corny, but great. Basically, what I get is stop worrying, just relax and enjoy life like everyone else. Once you stop stressing out you'll finally achieve everything you're worrying about.

Damien Rice – Cold Water Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of those songs that almost doesn't need lyrics. I didn't start actually listening to the words to this song for the longest time. The music an I guess the feeling is so mesmerizing. This is such a strong song. I can never listen to it just once, I have to listen to it several times in a row.

It is such a lonely song. I don't see how anyone couldn't relate to this song...who hasn't felt completely lost and alone at some point? The word "stagnant" always comes to my mind when I hear this song. The speaker of the song is just stuck clinging to faith, or God, or someone.

I get chills everytime I listen to this song. It still hasn't lost its initial effect on me, and it is number three on my top 25 most played on iTunes.
